Mr. Pearlman,
Obviously, Walter Payton is a beloved figure. His legend is renowned in this city and the people he touched, either by his play or his persona, are not readily accommodating to those who might wish to highlight the chinks in his armor.
To me, Walter Payton was all there ever needs to be in the personification of The Chicago Bears.
However, Sports Illustrated is running an excerpt from your book. Within that excerpt, I can find no fault in your portrayal of the man. Walter went through challenges few of us have known. No one should find anything that would reduce their perceptions of him. It's quite a challenge you undertook. It's well-written. And you have large balls.
Thanks for the taffy.

Again, that was a few pages in the book. Did you think that a biography would sugar coat the bad things? Sweep them under the rug? The whole book isn't "bashing" the legend of Payton.
Do you honestly think that was his sole purpose in writing the book? To tear him down?

People's private lives should be just that ... private. But nothing SELLS like dirt right ? Like Kevin Butler said " What's the point ? " . Here's this guys point : Starts with M, ends with Y, with ONE in the middle.
What should you call any : Fumble , Hold , Interception , Three and out , or Sack ?
A " F.H.I.T.S " ? or a J'Marcus ?

PRoblem is per usual the first review only gave the dirt that was previously unknown, and now people think that is all that is in it. From what I have heard it is a full book, good and bad. When it does both it not a tarnishing; it's a biography.
It's sad, but it's really not suprising that he was hooked on pain killers, or drugs. he used them probably most of his career, and then afterwards was probably in pain most days for the rest of his life. I don't hold that against him at all.

Ditka urlacher Briggs etc take on it is how I feel. Bringing up shit about a man dead who can't defense himself is bullshit and the purpose is to make money trashing a legend. Classless and fuck si

So when Brett Favre dies, we're all gonna feel bad for making jokes about his drug dependence in the late 90s?

It all goes away in 6-12 months as the push to sell is abated as well as the next "tell all" comes out.

Again, do you think his intent from the beginning was to trash Payton?
and
What should he have done with the information that most people actually already knew about, just not the general public?

1."Butthead" is not a doctor. So what he says is merely speculation, not based on any facts.
2.We already knew Payton was sick, that is why he died at a young age.
3.How does this change anything exactly? Pearlman writes a book about Payton, covers EVERYTHING, good and bad...and now Butler is saying some of his erratic behavior may have been caused by brain trauma? Well congratulations, it basically confirms what Pearlman wrote to begin with...that Payton acted erratic after football.
You guys act like Pearlman wrote "Payton did bad stuff because he was an asshole!!" or something.
Oh, and his excerpt was featured on both ESPN and SI.com, so i highly doubt he needs little ol DBS for "publicity" seeing as how he is getting that anyway. But hey...there is a solution to all of this...if you disagree with his book and what he wrote, take the time and do your own research and write your own book that explains whatever the "truth" may be.

Right...because every biography ever written was done while that person was alive, and they never have anything bad to say about the subject at all...
Are you serious?
