Lovie on play-calling imbalance: 'We'll clean it up'

The Chicago Bears' play-calling got far enough out of balance Sunday that coach Lovie Smith has pledged to “clean it up.”
Offensive coordinator Mike Martz called only 11 running plays in a 30-13 loss to the New Orleans Saints and the Bears had just 12 rushing attempts -- including one scramble by quarterback Jay Cutler -- the second-fewest rushes in a game in franchise history.
“I know the balance as far as running/passing wasn’t there,” Smith said. “All I can say is we’ll get it better. We can’t win football games with that kind of balance.”
Martz called 52 passes (45 pass attempts, six sacks, one scramble) and 11 runs, more one-sided than anything he did last year in the first half of the season when the Bears regularly ignored the running game.
Matt Forte had a 42-yard run on his second carry of the game against the Saints, the pivotal play in an 87-yard touchdown drive that staked the Bears to a 7-0 lead. He got eight carries the rest of the game and just one in the second half.
Asked if he was surprised, Forte said, "Surprised? Yeah. Ten rushes is not really a whole lot."
With 10:02 remaining in the third quarter, the Bears trailed 16-13 and there had been 29 passes called and 10 runs.
How does that happen?
“Just happened. Happens like that sometimes,” Smith said. “We’ll clean it up.”
The Bears have run the ball more than they’ve passed it in eight of the last 11 regular-season games. They’re 8-3 in those games and the three losses were in the games with more passes. Has Smith spoken with Martz about a game plan that looked an awful lot like what the team worked so hard to get away from last season?
“Yeah, we speak a little bit from time to time,” Smith said. “Yes, I have. I’m not going to sit here and tell you the reason why, I’m just going to tell you we have to get the balance a lot better and we will. We didn’t do that yesterday for a lot of different reasons.”
Was Martz’s play script influenced by the thought the Bears would struggle running the ball vs. the Saints?
“I’m going to tell you again, we didn’t have the balance that we needed,” Smith said. “I’m not going to give you anymore reasons why. We’ll have it better this week. That’s my answer.”
We’ll have to wait for Wednesday to get Martz’s answer.
