    Pompei Film Breakdown

"The Saints brought seven pass rushers seven times, including on four of the sacks. They brought six pass rushers 13 times. They brought five pass rushers 14 times."
    ...................
"Offensive linemen appeared to be responsible for only two of the sacks. The first was in the fourth quarter, when Junior Galette got around right tackle Frank Omiyale and Sedrick Ellis burst past Roberto Garza up the middle.

The second appeared to be a mental lapse when J'Marcus Webb and Chris Williams both blocked the same man, leaving Gallette unblocked for the sack.

The biggest problem with the offensive line: the run-blocking was putrid. The Saints often guessed right and loaded up the box on runs, but the Bears line got no movement and often gave ground on handoffs."

You can almost make the argument that if the O-line was that bad at run blocking, they were also responsible for more than two sacks because it was no secret that we HAD to throw the ball.

I don't have a video to analyze to see who, what, when, and where it all came apart but the majority of the sacks need to be laid at the feet of Mike Martz. The game plan sucked and the playcalling fed right into the hands. When a team blitzes you on 34 of 45 passing plays you need to think seriously about more blocker and less receivers yet Martz did just the opposite. How many time did we see an empty backfield with a LB on the left poised to blitz with no one to pick him up?

There was not one adjustment made to make the offense more effective against that onslaught, not one. In fact the worse the blocking got the more he fed right into it. Cutler wasn't sacked at all in the first half but got sacked 6 times in the second and God knows how may more hits he took. Jay played a lousy game but when you're up against that kind of pressure very play and you're getting nothing to combat it I'd be a little pissed off at my line and my OC too. Jay Cutler isn't any different than any other good QB. Take away his running game and force him to throw against constant and effective blitzing and there's no way for him to succeed. If we could get to Aaron Rodgers than well this week maybe we can win the game 3 to zip provided we keep them out of FG range.

If you know that your line is shaky and you just lost your starting RT why would you keep calling pass plays that the line block and why would you not keep a FB in the backfield and/or a TE in to help? We can sit here and blame that Oline all we want but it would be like blaming Brian Urlacher for giving up to may receptions if we played him at CB. Martz still doesn't get it even after what we went through last year. How many more times will they let him set us up to lose before somebody yanks that mike and headset away from him and somebody else starts calling plays. I doubt even Lovie could have done worse.
I'm getting to that age where a lifetime warranty just doesn't mean as much to me anymore as an afternoon nap.

Jay Cutler was sacked just 11 times in his final season (16 games) in Denver. He's already been sacked 11 times through 2 games in 2011.

was sacked 51 times in 37 games with Denver. As a Bear, he's been sacked 98 times in 33 games.

    ZachZaidman Zach Zaidman

Kurt Warner was sacked 87 times in his first 3 years (43 games) as the Rams starting QB.

this is more a talent issue on offense then it is mike martz stop making excuses for a poorly put together offense. No go to wr and no Ol addition aside from Carimi.

Yeah it is but what's happening is that Martz is either ignoring the obvious (once again) that he can't run his offense with the personnel he has or he insists on doing it despite that. His playcalling Sunday was more the sign of a mad hatter than a mad genius. When your opponent in sending 6 or 7 rushers it would seen to be common sense that you'd need more than 5 guys to block them yet he completely ignored that and continued to call plays with 4 or 5 receivers and 7 step drops.

If he's trying to demonstrate just how ineffective his so called genius is by proving a point then they need to fire his ass now and regroup under Tice at the very least or hire Cutler's old mentor Jeremy Bates. I don't see how we continue to run an offense that averages no less than 2 sacks per game no matter how successfully it's being run and 6 sacks or more when it's not. And that's not counting the hits Cutler is taking. If I were Jay Cutler I would be very pissed off with this. No matter how tough he may be there's no QB in the league that can take 16 games of that shit and as long as Martz is given free reign that's what's gonna happen.

It's time for another come to Jesus talk with him and official notice than unless there is some marked improvement over the next two games someone else will be put in charge. I don't want to see an entire season go down the tubes because Martz won't adjust to what he has rather than constantly trying to make his offense work without the tools to do it. We've got the best QB we've had since Luckman and I don't want to see his career ended by a lame duck asshole like Martz.

if they dont want to run the martz offense then easy they shouldnt have hired martz

but they did hire martz so you get what you hire.

and I think the fact that he is the only one of the staff to not get an extension says what direction JA wants to go in and that is away from Martz cause he doesnt want to invest on that side of the ball.

last season everyone was stroking Tice saying that is all we need to improve on oline whoooooooooooooops so JA adds one new player and lets go of a washed up C to just slide a washed up G to play the position. Well done!!!! JA in offseason says Hester is our big money WR. Well done!!!!! And you guys want to blame this mess on Martz lmfao

Maybe Mike Tice should start on the oline and put JA at QB........

hopefully this resolves the myth of the fairy dust weilding position coaches making a unit better and not talent first and fore most

Thanks brother. I can't tell you how frustrating it was to watch that offense on Sunday. There was a LB poised to blitz off the end on every play yet we made no adjustments in the blocking to pick him up. I'm not a "genius" like Mike Martz but I can pretty damn well figure out that you can't block 7 rushers with 5 blockers. There isn't a QB in the league that could have played well under those conditions so it's not really all that surprising that Cutler didn't.

After the Atlanta game I was willing to take Martz promise that he would run a balanced offense as this years gospel. Now I can see that he's just the same old liar and bullshit artist I accused him off earlier when traded Greg Olsen after Martz built him up and said how much bigger a part of his offense Olsen would be. The same thing happened with his bullshit handling of Hanie and handing the #1 WR spot to his boy without even a reasonable amount of competition before he did it. Where has that gotten him since his "golden boy" is nursing a boo boo and is of even less use to us now!

Not only will Mike Martz not improve this offense but I think there's a good chance that he will make it even worse than it is if that were even possible. What I saw on Sunday was very good QB who had lost all confidence in the gameplan he was given and the plays he was given to run. You could see the disgust on his face and for once I actually saw him get pissed off and say something to his coach instead of just sulking. Even Lovie, of all people, the great stone face had a very pissed off look on his face while he was looking up at the booth where Martz was sitting. I've never seen that from him before.

Lovie won't ever tell anyone what was said during his meeting with Martz but for him to emphasize twice that there will be a more balanced approach tells me that the law has been laid down for the last time. This is not good for us because Martz will not be happy to be so restricted in his game plans and I don't see him improving this situation much especially with the Oline falling apart. If we can't mount a running game and he isn't able to design a passing game that works with what he has we're screwed.

It pretty simple. If Mike Martz expects to stay here he either puts an offense on the field that can win games or his ass will be ridden out of town come seasons end, if not before, just like what happened with Terry Shea. They're two arrogant peas in a pod as far as I'm concerned.
