Mullins: Whos seat is getting HOT

Mike posed the question of who will be on a hot seat – Jerry Angelo or Lovie Smith – if things continue to sour. “If they struggle or lose to Carolina, there’s going to be real trouble for Lovie Smith or Jerry Angelo,” Mike suggested.

    http://www.csnchicago.com/09/28/11/W...702&feedID=626

I do not know how true the idea is that there will be trouble for either guy. I say that because it appears that Ted Phillips is a spineless Jelly-Fish that has no power and no control.

This is my own breakdown of the situation,

Lovie Smith, I do no think he deserves a lot of the blame and I do not think that he should go. In fact much of what he has done in Chicago is very good, but if losing Angelo means losing Lovie I am okay with that.

Jerry Angelo, he must go he is the single greatest reason that this team struggles and his draft history and his inability to improve the team in the best division in football is inexcusable. I would sacrifice the entire coaching staff and front office to get rid of him.

Ted Ruskell, he should follow Angelo out the door and we should go with someone younger and more connected to offensive football. If he became the GM it would be an improvement over Angelo, but not that great of a change.

Ruskell is JA 2.0. They both have the same philosophy-it would be equivalent to bringing in a Martz disciple.
Arguing on the internet is like winning the special olympics, even if you win your still messed up.

Same philosiphy, but a different man so I am assuming somethings would change.

I do not want Ruskell, but anyone would be better than Jerry Angelo.

Yeah, surprisingly i dont blame Lovie as much as i do the FO. Lovie HAS done good things with this team at times, weve win the division a few times, been to the SB, the NFC Championship last year. Lovie may not be the best coach in the league, but he is far from the worst.

No, its the cronyism and poor FO decisions that are the problem. We dont need to turn the Bears into the Rams. We dont need yes-men for OC and DC. Lovie worked better when he was at odds with Rivera, much like Ditka did against Buddy Ryan. If we get a new FO and new OC, focus on OL this offseason...theres no reason this team couldnt return to being contenders, even under Lovie.

4 people should be on the hotseat list in order:
JA, to paraphrase Bill Cosby from "himself" YOU DID THIS TO MEEEEEE! His horrid bust filled drafts are a thing of legend. Those 47 safety combo's, that's not on the coach, he's shuffling through hey to find a needle, it's all on JA and his inability to find quality in the draft.
Martz greatest show on grass..w/the worst grass in the league, the worst OL and WR's in the league; seriously? Your genious is lacking and your mad is showing all to well. Daryl Drake, what has he done to deserve staying here; who has developed under him? There is SOME talent on this WR squad, and the fact that none of them know how to run a good route is more about him then their talent.
Mike Tice, sorry but you have done jack w/what little you've been given. These guys are still NFL quality linemen, and there has been no improvement; and actual regression.

Now Tice/Drake/Martz are all on Smith, these are his guys....but it's now all to obvious that he needs to be given a choice of who he wants, from a group of coaches not of his choosing. Let the GM pick a group of non cronie, non ex employees of Lovie's and then interview them and make him make a decision on who is best for his vision. I think Lovie has done as good a job, if not better then Ditka for what he's been given and had to put up with. But if they decided to clear house; I'm cool w/that too.

I would tend to agree with you Windy. As little like as I have for Lovie Smith's brand of Chicago Bears football he has had success despite his obvious shortcomings on game day and his players love him. If we lose Lovie we lose Rod Marinelli and people want to come to Chicago to play and learn from those guys.

The only coach I would fire if things aren't drastically better this weekend and thereafter is Mike Martz. One more week of calling 40 pass plays and a dozen runs and his stint as OC and play called has to end even if it is early in the season. His offense doesn't work here and it never will. It's an antiquated system that came from an era when most of the best athletes on a team played offense and teams didn't have the pass rush and blitz abilities they do today. There weren't any Lawrence Taylors, Julius Peppers, DeMarcus Ware's, Clay Mattews and Brian Urlachers in those days.

Martz's offense with it's seven step drops and emphasis on the big play is killing us. The Bears strength has always been in running a ball control oriented offense that when coupled with a dominant defense and great special teams play brings home wins. Why Lovie seems inclined to attach guys like a Terry Shea or a Mike Martz to this I can't figure out. It didn't work his first year here and it isn't working now. If he allows Martz to continue along this path we become a .500 football team again. Only when we return to the other offensive style will we start to win again.

Jerry Angelo must go. Whatever small touch he has defensively isn't about to compensate for in woeful inability to improve the offense. The only good move he's made in that direction was to obtain Cutler and if the rumors were correct he had to practically have a gun put to his head to pull that one off. His failure to understand that the road to a great offense starts with the line and his ineptitude in meeting this objective are beginning to be legendary both in Chicago and around the rest of the league. Here are his latest failures.

Jerome Bushrod didn't even get a long term deal from NO. Here's his contract info; http://www.spotrac.com/nfl/new-orlea...ermon-bushrod/. Two years at $4.75 mil each. We pay damn near that much to OMG gave almost that much to Manu. How hard would it have been to better that deal with an offer for 5 years at around $30 mil? How in the hell did we lose out on this one.

Willie Colon resigned with Pittsburgh for $29 mil over 5 years but only $6 mil was guaranteed and his 2011 cap hit is only $2.7 mil; http://www.spotrac.com/nfl/pittsburg.../willie-colon/. That's just $400k more than OMG is costing us for a RT/RG who can pass block and IS able to play both OT and OG. We offered $3 mil more and lost him. What if we'd have really sweetened the pot by another $3 mil ($35 mil over 5 years) and upped his guarantee? How much better off would we be right now following Carimi's injury if we had Colon playing RT rather than OMG?

With the cap excess we had going into FA and the reduction in rookie pay that the new CBA brought about we could have probably had both of these guys with $35 mil deals and rebuilt around them. Both are young guys who are just now hitting their peak! We may have had to spend a little of that money but the 2011 cap hits for both wouldn't have exceeded $8 mil. Eight mil more for an Oline like this; LT=Bushrod, LG=CWill, OC=Garza, RG=Colon, RT= Carimi. By doing this we end up with Webb/OT and Louis/OG as backups as they should be and not starters. So in addition to Spencer as a backup OC/OG this would have been the Oline roster and that's what we might have had right now if Angelo had only done his job rebuilding the Oline.

Malcom Floyd signed for two years for $5 mil (2011/$2.0 mil, 2012/$3 mil) with another $1 mil each year incentive bonus. 2011 Cap Cost $3 mil if bonus is earned and $2 mil if not; http://www.spotrac.com/nfl/san-diego.../malcom-floyd/. Instead we took RWill for 1 year for $2.46 mil or roughly the same cost as Floyd; http://www.spotrac.com/nfl/chicago-bears/roy-williams/. As it stands which would we be better off with, a guy who has averaged over 18.0 YPC over the past three years and will catch in traffic or the guy who averaged 14.0 YPC on about the same number of catches who won't. Floyd is also 2' taller and 10-15 lbs heavier.

Up until this year I may have defended Jerry Angelo as being OK as a GM, not all that good but not all that bad. But after his complete failure to improve the three must upgrade positions, OT, OG, and WR in FA with a $30 mil cap excess to work with he's cooked his own goose and Phillips would be an utter fool to keep him. Fire both him and Ruskell and get a true football GM, not a glorified scout who couldn't tell a good offensive lineman from a bad one and one who can keep this team on top year after year. As fans we deserve that much in exchange for our continued loyalty.
I'm getting to that age where a lifetime warranty just doesn't mean as much to me anymore as an afternoon nap.

Nice write up and research SOUL.

Jerry Angelo is insulting to the fans as well. I cannot handle how he talks to us like we are idiots and cannot see what is going on.

The real question is does anyone think that with the mounting personnel failures that Jerry Angelo will be fired?

Everyone knows my feeling about this without going in depth its all JA.....

but to interject some reality here noone and I mean noone will get fired. Martz might not be re-signed in offseason but Lovie and JA are safe until 2013 when their contracts expire. We could see JA retire and Ruskell get a shot at best. So welcome to the Chicago Seahawks
