BBAO: Should Bears bench Roy Williams?

We're Black and Blue All Over:

If you were the Chicago Bears, would you keep trotting receiver Roy Williams onto the field or would you back off his playing time until he demonstrated more efficiency in the offense? That was one of the questions our ESPNChicago.com crew considered in this week's edition of "Four Downs."

Jeff Dickerson had this strong response: "There is zero chemistry between Williams and Jay Cutler. None. The groin injury can't be used as an excuse because even before Williams got hurt in Week 1 he failed to show anything of substance in training camp or the preseason. He dropped a sure touchdown against the Packers, and his lack of effort on a few other throws was unacceptable. At this point, the Bears would be better served giving Johnny Knox all the game reps. Knox might drop some passes, but at least he runs full-speed while doing it."

I doubt the Bears will follow suit, but I think it's pretty obvious that Williams and Cutler have a lot of work to do in order to become an effective combination. In the meantime, a player Cutler had exceptional chemistry with -- tight end Greg Olsen -- will be standing on the visitor's sideline Sunday at Soldier Field.

The answer to this should be a resounding yes. I didn't even bother to post a poll about it since I think 100% of the responses would also have been the same. The guy has been useless so far and his lack of effort on two throws Sunday led to the only two picks Cutler had all day. By now Jay won't trust the guy at all so why even play him. He won't get thrown to if it can be avoided and once that begins to happen we'll have another Keyshawn on our hands. The press will love it and it will become a locker room issue.

His point about Johnny Knox is well founded. You can fault him for certain things but not his speed and not his effort. Given their respective talent levels what's clear is that the 5th rounder Knox has plenty of room to improve while the former 1st rounder Williams is about at the tail end of a long downward slide. Let Knox play and let him improve through reps. When we need a bigger body out there play Sam Hurd, another high effort guy who wants to play at WR not just as a ST Gunner.

This is the second year in a row JA has given into Mike Martz on personnel matters and none of the players involved has added a damn thing to his offense despite his claims to the contrary. Cutler has zero rapport with RWill and little if any respect left for Mike Martz for hanging him out to dry with this guy. If I were running the show both Martz and Williams would get their final paychecks after this Sunday and a bus ticket out of town. Neither one of them is improving this team.

Bench RW,sit JC, and put JackkAss in behind the OL he did everything possible in the off season. He'd get killed and WE would be done with him. Works for me.

All of our wide receivers should be benched, they all suck. Johnny Knox needs to grow a sack and fight for a bad pass once in a while. Hester should not be on the field, he can separate from the defenders and I am not sold on Earl Bennet. This week I watched several wr fight for a ball in double coverage. Eli Manning can throw a favre like pass and have a no name wr fight 2 defenders for it and come down with the ball. Larry Fritzgerald can fight two defenders constantly and still catch the ball. Can Johnny Knox or Hester do that? Hell no, but they can cry for a flag in about every other play.

The only starter wr should be Bennett. Sanz on any other team is the 3rd or 4th but here he's our best option lol.
