A Sloppy Win but a Win All the Same..................
Not exactly what I'd call a well played game by either the offense or the defense. We were fortunate Forte pulled off that last big run or we would have lost another at home that we should easily have won.
I'll applaud the run game only so much. Carolina is an easy team to run on. We proved that last year. Martz must have been drugged before the game and handed a game play list that only had run plays on it. The pass plays I think he must have made up as he went.
Provided they both stay healthy I'd start putting Spencer at RG and Louis at RT. What in the hell did the Bears ever see in OMG that led them to believe the guy could pass block? He has no idea how to lock up with his guy and take him around the back of the pocket. Once he loses contact with his man the guy just walks right in on Cutler. At least Webb can do that. Whoever made the call on signing him should be out of a job. There isn't any position on the line that he can play with any proficiency at all.
Jennings looked bad today, really bad. Smith is an excellent WR but you have to a better job than that. More than once he just plain lost track of him in coverage and Smith is the kind of guy he should be able to defend. I can see what the Pats found lacking in Meriweather too. He goes for the big hit and doesn't play the ball. The Pats fans were right when they say he's a heartbreaker. He gives up too many big plays like the TD to Smith. I know some of you want to blame Jennings but why would he have let Smith go unless he thought he had coverage behind him? If I had to guess who blew the assignament I'd be more inclined to guess Meriweather than Jennings. Meriweather has a rep for doing just that.
What makes Lance Briggs so elite? Three games in a row now he's blown his coverage on the goaline and given up a TD to the TE. He makes plays near and behind the line against the run, I'll give him that, but three different teams have singled him out inside the ten and gotten TD's out of it. He doesn't follow the man and his coverage drops stink. He doesn't move at all he just drops and stands there. All the receiver has to do is align himself outside of his reach and it's a score. I miss Pisa. He's far better in coverage than Briggs is.
Overall the defense played poorly most of the game but they did come up big at the end when they had to. We gave up 543 yards in total offense to those guys. How many games can you win doing that? A pick for a TD and the PR TD saved their ass today. Cam Newton is a beast. He's as big and a far more athletic version of Culpepper and that guy always gave us trouble. The guy plays and passes amazingly well for a rookie. Can't wait to see what he's like in another year or two.
The offense shouldn't be given anywhere near as much credit as they probably will be. Two scores against that defense is a poor showing especially since they came after big plays. Only 15 first downs and only 317 yards of total offense, 228 of those by our "non-elite" back Matt Forte. How hard will it be for most teams to stop us when one guy is responsible for 72% of the total yardage? The Packers took him completely out of the game last week and if the Panther's had done that we'd have gotten our asses beat.
Two things I did appreciate though was the fact that RWill barely saw the field and Hester proved again that he's not a #1 WR. Not even close. Now maybe they can keep him returning kicks and running special plays. He's not a starter. As soon as Bennett is healthy again he and Knox should be starting outside and Hester should be sharing time with Sanz who is turning into "go to guy" number two. If we can keep RWill on the bench and Bennett on the field we can actually have a decent passing attack provided Cutler gets time. Hester has to come out for all but special plays designed to get him mismatches. He's just not an every down WR. His blocking sucks. Give Sam Hurd some reps.
I like Clutts as a true FB and I love what Barber can do with a very small hole. Forte can't power his way through like Barber can. He's always looking to break the run and he carries himself too high. That said he did have an excellent game today. Once he gets in the open field he's dangerous but behind a line with no hole in close quarters is not his long suit. Bell and Barber need more carries when we can't run outside like we did today.
Cutler looked ok but I can tell that the constant pressure he getting is beginning to affect his mechanics again. When the ball sails on him like it did on the pick it's because he's throwing off his back foot again. If they can only put a line in front of him that can give him 3-4 seconds protection he can pick any team apart but without that he's cooked. His mechanics go to hell and he maked really bad decisions. Angelo should have his balls cut off and fed to him for letting this happen again.
Well that my game summary. Here's the one from Game Center;http://www.chicagobears.com/gameday/completestats.html
