Chicago Bears How much do you guys wanna bet...

    Try this scenario:

I bet that if instead of having Cutler, we had McNabb... and McNabb flopped for us like he did for Minnesota...

Even though all the evidence pointed to a change...

Lovie would assure us, "Donovan is our quarterback."

And he'd keep on insisting this over and over. Except our defense wouldn't be able to win those games for us.

    Still...

    "Donovan is our quarterback."

And Lovie would go down with the ship, confident that he was right all along. Too bad he's still HC.

In other quarterback news... For the past two games, Cutler has been an absolute warrior. He has been extremely impressive. I'm proud to have that guy behind a very questionable line. He's definitely doing the best with what he has to work with. And his "F**K YOU" comment to Martz is just spectacularly awesome!

except this is his 4th qb that he's had; and benched the 1st one less then 1/2 way through the season after that qb started in the SB; and then in the last 3 games gave his 3rd string qb a shot at earning the job.

He would say "X player" is our starter, until it's time to make a change, and then the next guy is "our starter". He always shows confidence in his starters.

I don't doubt what you say for a moment.

Something about a scenario like that, as it has happened that way in the past, keeps running around in my head. (and I wish it would wear softer soles). Try these thoughts on for size.

Jerry Angelo's true personality is coming out of hiding. I think the guy is far more insecure in his ability to run the show than he ever lets on. I think that's part of the reason for his self delusion. He has to believe he's done the very best that can be done because he has a very hard time admitting failure. Let's examine that in reference to this offseason.

There wasn't a soul who follows the Bears who couldn't have told him exactly what positions needed to be addressed in the draft and FA. A third grader would have known it. So he gets lucky in the draft and gets the guy who best suits this team as an OT and then he stops right there. Not one additional lineman was drafted and his attempt to sign the two addtional lineman we needed in FA was a miserable failure. His response to this was, hey I did all I could. We're fine because I drafted an OT in the first round and I signed Chris Spencer. That'll do it. LMAO! That's delusional.

Trying to run a Mike Martz offense behind a 7th round 2nd year LT, a rookie RT, a former 1st round LT coverted to OG with only a years experience, and another 7th round OT converted to OG who got benched the year before is pretty stupid in my book. Believing it will work well enough for this offense is insane. On top of that he fails to sign the one guy who could help provide some leadership and at least help these guys develop into an effective group. For the most part this has been a colossal failure and only a major deviation from the way Martz usually does things will save Cutler from potentially spending the rest of the season on IR.

Why does the coaching staff support this guy, or do they? Even Lovie has been strangely silent about this. It's been Angelo who claims they're on the same page and always work well together yet of late I haven't heard Lovie actually confirm that. I think there's more friction there than any of us realize and I think it began over the need to upgrade that Oline. Shortly after he was drafted Tice made it clear that Carimi would play RT and Webb move to LT. If the coaches were confident he could handle it why would the Bears have pursued Bushrod in free agency? Why spend the money? If the coaches were certain that Louis could handle the transition to OG better this year why pursue Colon and spend even more money?

I think those were the guys both the pro scouts and the coaches earmarked as must haves for Martz's offense to work. Imagine how much better off we'd be right now with those two playing LT and RT or RG. From an economic standpoint it made sense too. The guys Bushrod and Colon would replace as starters were only 7th round picks making minimum salaries and would be great backups and the quality and depth of the line would increase 100% by this move. We also had plenty of cap room to do it so it should have been a lock right, a home run move? JA struck our because he played $$$ hardball just like he's doing with Forte and his offers weren't good enough to pry these guys away from their Super Bowl capable teams. These guys weren't playing for the Bengals or the Seahwks they played for the Saints and the Steelers and they weren't gonna leave that for the Bears and a modest bump in pay. On top of that the coaches wanted to retain Kruetz for some stability at the very least and they didn't get that either.

He screwed up big time and he continues to do it by the way he's been handling Forte's situation which he said he would prioritize and could have gotten done before the season began if he'd stopped trying to convince himself, Forte and everyone else that he wasn't a top 10 back. We really didn't need this crap going on just before the season began when the focus should have been on how to better last years finish rather than how to just hold on with the players we had.

The crack in this phony facade of mutual respect and co-operation between coaching and management came just before the Lions game when Angelo kind of threw Lovie, Tice and Martz under the bus by insisting the blocking talent was there they just needed to play better (which implied they lacked proper coaching). Then the game begins and he looks like a complete idiot for even thinking that let alone saying it on national television. After the game Lovie fired his own shots back in Angelo's direction and several veteran players and Cutler have also publicly questioned Angelo's decisions regarding the line. But in the face of that Jerry Angelo still insists that drafting Carmim and bringing in Spencer to replace Olin Kruetz were just the thing needed to fill the holes and that he's happy with the guys he's got. They just need more experience and better coaching. I call bullshit on you Jerry Angelo.

For the first time that I can remember his coaches, veteran players, and his $50 mil QB aren't backing him up but he won't admit the mistake. He's too proud and insecure to do that and that's his downfall. Unfortunately he's taking a few other down that path with him. JA has lost touch with the reality of what this team is and what it isn't and he's lost the faith of players and fans alike. It would be best if he stepped down after this season and before the next free agency and draft and if he refuses then Ted Phillips and George McCaskey should do it for him. Let him finish out his contract in some other capacity but he needs to be removed from the position of building this team. The team needs it too.

Jesus Soulman I agree with everything you say and havent we been going over this for:

years and years and years and years and years.

They are never going to come to their senses at Halas Hall.

In the third round when you need more OL ...

    pick Conte.

It's just not in their playbook to see OFFENSE as any more then ...

well we got Cutler ... problem solved.

    They cant see past that.

Offense is a mystery to them ...

they think it begins and ends with Cutler and Forte ...

even Forte they view as expendable if the price is too high.

This is just the way these guys think draft after draft ... they are not going to change.

Yeah jackie we have been and will be while Angelo is still running the personnel show. Until that changes nothing else will either. He'll ring the bell on a few swings enough so to keep his job but never enough to fix what's wrong with the team.

We need a big time football guy in here whose had playing and/or coaching experience. Someone like a Mike Holmgren or an Ozzie Newsome. Jerry Angelo is an overpaid scout and not a very good one at that. Eleven years of lousy offensive lines and crappy offenses is enough. Fire Jerry Angelo!
