Matt Bowen; Harsh Words Between Players and Coaches Nothing New.........

Harsh words between players and coaches nothing new

In pros, players often are confrontational, and it's often a good thing

Matt Bowen Scouting the Bears 10:31 p.m. CDT, October 20, 2011

    "Do it again."

That's all I heard from my position coach less than 36 hours after getting off the plane from a Monday night victory.
Full pads. Full contact. Tackling drills during the off week. This would be the fifth time in a row I would have to go through the same drill.

"Why don't you (bleeping) get in there and carry the ball then."

    That was my response.

We exchanged more words, finished the drill and went back to work.

    That's it.

No carry-over into meetings, the next game or even after my career. We still talk and respect one another because of our relationship as professionals.

No different than what was caught on camera during the Bears' Sunday night win over the Vikings. Jay Cutler had some comments for Mike Martz for a national TV audience to hear.

"Tell (Martz) I said (bleep) him."

    Oh, well.

A couple of words that likely have been said before between the two, only now it was broadcast for everyone to hear.

I've seen it spill over on the sidelines with players and coaches. Headsets are thrown, trainers and equipment managers act as peacemakers, words — even threats — are exchanged.

NFL sidelines turn into fourth-grade recess throughout a game. It's controlled chaos for the entire team to see. And when that happens, emotions get the best of everyone involved.

This isn't high school, where players ride in silence on the bus, or even college, where head coaches are the law of the land.

In the NFL, players voice their opinions. When it comes from your quarterback, you listen.

Don't hold this against Cutler. Applaud him for it.

This is what I want to see out of the quarterback on this team. I want to play with a guy who isn't afraid to hold his offensive line and wide receivers accountable, or challenge the coaching staff when the situation calls for it.

From a player's perspective, that is leadership. We see it weekly around the NFL from some of the best quarterbacks in the game. It is their job to run the team on Sundays.

Cutler and Martz will continue to work together as pros, and this team will respond to the actions of its quarterback. A couple of loud words said during a game won't change that.

Special contributor Matt Bowen, who played at Glenbard West and Iowa, spent seven seasons in the NFL as a strong safety. You also can find his work at nationalfootballpost.com

So take that Dan Pompeii. Maybe if you were a player as opposed to a couch potato sportswriter and armchair QB you'd know what players consider good leadership. You guys bitched for weeks about how he didn't show leadership but when he does you want to criticize him for how he does it. Try someone's point of view besides your own next time.

I just like how this whole conflagration has redeemed Cutler in the eyes of jaded Bear fans.

    What knee injury?

I think a few of his "Timex" games (takes a lickin' but keeps om tickin') did a lot to put those questions about his toughness to rest. To me it's was more the media raising an eyebrow than Bears fans.

I'd say both unless you consider badminton a sport.

    On a related note......

Dane Sanzenbacher fan of Jay Cutler

    ESPNChicago.com

Dane Sanzenbacher has experienced the "wrath" of Jay Cutler several times this season, but the Chicago Bears rookie said the sometimes tough treatment by his quarterback only makes him and his fellow receivers better.
"He absolutely doesn't take it easy on me," Sanzenbacher said Monday on "The Waddle & Silvy Show" on ESPN 1000. "You're going to get the wrath of it every now and then. [I got it] at least three times [Sunday night against the Vikings]. It was all warranted.
"Jay has been great since I got here. I think I was surprised by how patient he was with me at the beginning. I think it's helped. He's a tough critic. He's tough on all the guys, but it makes us better in the long run. But I think he has been one of the most helpful guys for me personally in my development."
An undrafted free agent out of Ohio State, Sanzenbacher has emerged as one of Cutler's favorite targets this season. He caught his team-leading third touchdown pass on a 13-yard connection with Cutler in the Bears' 39-10 victory over the Vikings on Sunday. He has 17 catches, tied for third on the team, and has been targeted 30 times, also third-best on the Bears.
Cutler has been a polarizing figure at times for what some perceive as poor body language on the sideline and an often prickly demeanor, but Sanzenbacher said his role as a leader is unquestioned.
"I can see where some of [the criticism] comes from," Sanzenbacher said. "I can see guys get the sideline shots and the body language and whatnot. But I think inside the locker room he's been a great leader. There's no question he is one of the leaders of this team, and there's a reason why he is one of the captains of this team."
Sanzenbacher, who led the Big Ten in receiving yards and touchdown catches last season, said he didn't set out to lead the Bears in a statistical category, just earn a spot on the team.
"I didn't really have expectations of a number I wanted to hit, that I wanted to lead the receiving corps in touchdowns or lead this," Sanzenbacher said. "I just wanted to come in and first of all make the team and kind of evolve from there. I think at this point it's doing whatever I can to contribute and stay on the field and earn the trust of your teammates. I think first and foremost when you come in as a rookie, you want to earn that trust. I think that's what I work on every day."

Fuck Chris Berman, Mike Ditka, Keyshawn Johnson, Cris Carter, Tom Jackson, and Trent Dildo for their remarks about Jay Cutler earlier this season. They spent a whole segment of one Sunday morning talking about Cutler's lack of leadership qualities as a result of his body language after coming out of the NFC Championship Game with a potentially serious knee injury. Real leadership comes in the locker room, where players fraternize and mold together a relationship that makes them familial in nature. I normally never dog Mike Ditka for his opinions because he is so firmly entrenched in the rich history and traditions of this great franchise, but he vehemently and vociferously attacked Cutler, and that was just wrong. ESPN is so quick to deify Aaron Rodgers as the next great quarterback in the NFL, but which one of the two starting quarterbacks led their team in offseason practices during the lockout? Tell me now that Cutler isn't a leader, and then I will probably kick your ass for being a bastard.

    lol@trent dildo

    Yeah, screw them.

I remember when Cutler was drafted by Denver. Even then, the reporting had an air of contempt for the kid. Like, yeah he's got talent but... he could be locker room cancer! Like he was another Jeff George or something.

And then, after the trade, how many articles were there that stated something along the lines of 'the Bears finally got the quarterback they've always wanted, but... did they get more than they bargained for..." cue the scary music!

It was like we were being force-fed the notion that Cutler was Big Arm, Bad Attitude.

Who here didn't have that presumption by the time the trade happened?

We don't know what occurred in Denver. All we do know is that Cutler suddenly wanted out. How it was painted after that was done entirely by the sports writers of this country (and some not of), and a lot of them were guessing.

Eating crow will put a shit grimace on your mug even if you're on national television. Which is why Trent and the gang still won't acknowledge Cutler as being a viable quarterback, capable of putting a team on his back and dragging them across the goal line.

    He is.

And we, as fans, should NOT warm up the rail for his ride out of town.

We finally do have the quarterback we've always wanted.

The only thing we got fooled into after the cutler trade was a sense the FO is taking the building of te offense seriously.
