Week 6: OL Grades
These grades are based on what this individual player has done and not comparing them to Logan Mankins or Joe Thomas.
I also must give the disclaimer that I blame Mike Martz more than any OLmen on this team for the failures of the OL. Martz showed that against the #1 Pass Rush in the NFL if you help the OL out they can do well. What Mike Martz did to the OL in Detroit by hanging them out to dry as criminal and I would have fired him after the game.
LT: J'Marcus Webb [C+]
J'Marcus is not a bad player he is inconsistent and I still believe that he is the future at LT as I have seen improvement from week to week. Webb has very good athletic ability for his position and his size and his footwork has improves 10x since last season. The problem with Webb at this moment is that he does not use his hands well and for his size he is not that strong. You saw against the Lions that when his technique falters and he does not use his hands he struggles. When you saw him against the Vikings his hand placement was better and he was able to control Jared Allen. Webb is a talented player and is worth continuing to develop. What I feel hurts Webb the most is that he is not protected like a young player should be by his coordinator. The Ravens still give Michael Oher a ton of help and he is regarded as an up and coming player.
LG: Chris Williams [B-]
Williams has been a pleasant surprise this season as he has moved from being terrible and hard to watch at LG to service able. Williams has been consistently okay and has not hurt the Bears throughout the season. He is solid in pass protection inside and has started to become a better run blocker when asked to pull and lead plays. The problem with Williams is that he only average and after 4 years in the NFL he looks like he is never going to be more than average.
[B]C: Roberto Garza
I have not been a huge Roberto Garza fan for the last couple of seasons, but this season he has shown that he is an important part of the line. Garza has been what he has always been, solid, and he continues to work with Jay to make calls. I do not know if physically he is as good as Spencer right now, but Cutler's relationship with him has been good. Also 0 bad snaps.
RG: Lance Louis [B+]
Louis has been the surprise of the Bears OL this season. Louis has shown the ability to be a DOMINANT run blocker when playing at OG. In the Atlanta game and the Carolina game when he came it at OT he was pancaking players and opening up lanes. Louis is still a work in progress when pass protecting, but from what I have seen it is technique issues and not athletic ability or strength problems. Louis has also shown that he can play RT in the NFL and that versatility has to be appreciated. To me Louis is our 2nd best OLmen behind Carimi.
RT: Gabe Carimi [B-]
The injury has cut short his season and made assessment tough. But when healthy Carimi showed that he can be the physical mauler that we expected at RT. He does not have the quickest feet and may never handle speed well, but I see a guy with elite strength and solid technique that can be a Whitworth or David Stewart type rock at OT.
OG Chris Spencer [B]
Spencer took some serious heat for not earning a starting job to being a wasted signing, but he has been really good when filling in for injuries. Spencer had a great game against the Cardinals and has shown that he can pass block at OG in 1 on 1 situations and he can run block with strength. The fact that he handled Kevin Williams with 1 hand is a sign that he does have starting NFL stuff and he may not start on this team right now when everyone is healthy, but to me he is the center of the future and has the strength to handle Raji down the line.
OT Frank Omiyale [F]
Is the worst OLmen in the NFL today.

I think Spencer should be the C of the future next year but should also draft a C and a G in the first few rounds. I know the jury is still out on Carimi but his feet are superior to that of Webb and his "athleticism" should get better once he gets a season under his belt. The Bears should feel stupid for trying to keep inserting Ohmyfail into the starting lineup.

Arguing on the internet is like winning the special olympics, even if you win your still messed up.

I have been fairly impressed with Webb's progress so far. I don't think most of his breakdowns are a physical problem with him - more mental that will come with experience and staying humble after a good showing.

We have rushed for a very good total of yards [100/game] and which DTs have hurt us this season?
This teams weaknesses can be traced to problems with the game plan and the play calling.
The Patriots do more to protect there awesome OL then we do to protect the young players that we have. They throw quick passes and chip with the law firm routinely.
Kellen Davis has been our worse pass protector this season.

How about a big fat F for the entire group and Tice gets a worse grade than Martz. The Saints and Lions game should be a perfect example on why this line sucks balls.

Webb is a q mitchel clone get over it

Nice work up Windy. I'll agree that Martz hasn't helped the pass blocking with his empty backfield 7 step drop crap. When we keep a TE and a FB or RB in to bloch Cutler has time to go downfield with the ball and if that's what Martz wants out of him he has to keep more than 5 guys in to block. End of story.
Webb's problems are far more with his head than his body. When he stays focused and locks onto his man he does ok, not great but ok. He does lack strenghth and he's awful when it comes to taking his man all the way around the edge of the pocket. That's one of Carimi's strengths and if Louis and Spencer keep holding down the fort on the right side Tice should think about moving Carimi to the left.
If his objective is to play his best 5 Webb may just be the odd man out.
I'm getting to that age where a lifetime warranty just doesn't mean as much to me anymore as an afternoon nap.

I agreed with a similar statement by you in another thread. Carimi is the LT of the future, not J'Marcus Webb. Webb has got to build up some strength in my opinion, and that means more time in the weight room and less time at the dinner table. It's embarrassing to watch him get manhandle by opposing DTs, though I have to admit that two of the very best we have seen this year in John Abraham and Jared Allen didn't totally dominate him. Last year, he was God awful. This year, he's about average. Still, he is not as talented or as polished as Carimi, and in my estimation, I think Webb is, at best, someone who you use as depth chart material.
