Jaworski Offers Up Kudos To Cutler.................

Ron Jaworski does about-face on Jay Cutler
    By Sean Jensen sjensen@suntimes.com November 9, 2011 10:48PM

    SAFETY DANCE
Jay Cutler is pumped about the Bears’ improved pass protection.

    3.4
sacks per game through the first five games (2-3)

    1.0
sacks per game over the last three games (3-0)

    Updated: November 10, 2011 2:20AM

When he turned on the film of the Eagles-Bears game Tuesday, ESPN Monday Night Football analyst Ron Jaworski marveled at Jay Cutler’s confidence and command.“That comes from success,” Jaworski told the Sun-Times on Wednesday. “Jay has been outstanding, but it starts with the offensive line. “I don’t know what Mike Tice is putting in their Gatorade, but they are playing very well.”

What a difference a month makes.

Before the Bears played the Detroit Lions at Ford Field on Oct. 10, Jaworski expressed concern about the cumulative effect of the punishment Cutler was enduring because of his sketchy pass protection. At the time, through four games, Cutler had been sacked 15 times — second-most in the NFL — and he was terrorized by the Lions.

“It’s a trust factor, and the only one who can feel that is Jay,” Jaworski said before that game. “But in his movement, he doesn’t trust his offensive line, and he doesn’t trust his receivers.”

The Bears lost that game, 24-13, but Cutler’s turnaround started that night, according to Jaworski. Despite being under constant duress, Cutler completed passes with a high degree of difficulty. “What makes him special is, he can make throws from different platforms,” Jaworski said, noting how Cutler can throw off-balance, when needed. “Quite honesty, he’s had to learn to throw that way, because the offensive line hadn’t protected him the way they should have.”

Now, though, Jaworski sees a balanced offense, with a versatile running back who can run inside, outside and catch the ball from anywhere.

“The weapons are starting to show up,” Jaworski said of the Bears offensive players. “It’s clearly a balanced offense and that’s what you’d like to have in this league.” Jaworski, though, noted that the return of Earl Bennett was considerable. He pointed to a third-and-16 play in the second quarter.
“Your quarterback needs time; the O-line gives him time,” Jaworski said. “Bennett works the route, and Cutler trusts him.

“A few of those situations, you don’t move the chains unless it’s Jay Cutler and Earl Bennett on the football field together. Three weeks ago, you don’t get that conversion.”

Since the loss to the Lions, the Bears have strung together three victories, with the offense showing the sort of consistency it did late last season. Cutler told reporters Wednesday at his news conference that they are “starting to get into midseason form.”

But during an appearance on ESPN 1000’s Waddle & Silvy show, Cutler heaped praise on offensive coordinator Mike Martz. “Mike’s doing a good job of protecting those guys, and being careful when we take some shots down field,” Cutler said.

Asked about wanting things to change, Cutler paused then said, “Things can get a little dicey sometimes. “You have to be careful how you go about it. The message was clear: we both agreed what direction we need to go,” he said. “Mike’s done an unbelievable job of adapting to what we’re capable of doing and kind of changing his train of thought, which isn’t easy to do.”

Earlier in the season, Cutler didn’t mask his desire to get the ball out of his hand quicker, and he certainly wasn’t singing the praises of his offensive line. But the unit has settled, with the same five preparing for a fourth consecutive start. In fact, halfway through Monday’s game in Philadelphia, Cutler was thinking how nice it was that he hadn’t been sacked.

“ ‘Let’s not jinx this yet,’ ” he recalled thinking.

Cutler wasn’t sacked, ending a streak of 29 regular-season games that he’d been sacked at least once. Jaworski said when Cutler sets his feet, “he throws [the ball] as well as anybody.” But Jaworski added that Cutler has to be more judicious in his decision-making and more trusting of his arm.

“I love the gunslinger mentality,” Jaworski said. “But he had a couple of throws in that Eagles game that could have been picked off. “I know they don’t show up as interceptions. But there seems to be a couple throws each game, where he gives the other team a chance to make a play.”

    Cutler acknowledged that challenge.

“You just have to be careful,” he said. “But sometimes you have a feel and you just let it fly.”
Cutler noted that completion percentage is one of the most important measures of a quarterback. His completion percentage is 58.7, tied for 24th in the NFL, way behind league-leader Aaron Rodgers (72.5). But Cutler’s receivers have dropped 19 passes, tied for second-most in the NFL. If his receivers would have limited that number to 10, Cutler’s completion percentage would be 62.5, which would be tied for 10th.

“Jay throws great balls,” Bennett said. “Anytime you give him time to sit back there, he’ll pick a defense apart.”

Once one of Jay Cutler's biggest critics "Jaws" does an honest about face and talks about what he's seeing since the last Detroit game. It's not like we didn't all have confidence in Cutler anyway once he got the protection he needed and an offense that used his talents instead of abusing them.

Good things; The OLine has finally begun to gel and are proving up to the task of providing good protection. Lance Louis has been a real find as an OT playing in Carimi's absence. Having Earl Bennet back has us looking like a completely different team throwing the ball now. If he can keep playing like he did against the Eagles and RWill can start holding onto the ball every time he gets his hands on it instead of about every third time our ability to move the ball through the air about doubles. Cutler has proven he can hit the target, the targets just need to hold on.

Bad Things; Bridging over from that last sentence. Bears receivers have 19 drops??? I think that's being generous. I think RWill has hald that many himself. Whatever the reason I wish it would stop affecting Sanz. He's normally as sure handed as Bennett and he's dropped 7 of those 19 himself. This needs to stop. Apparently things have been smoothed over between Cutler and Martz since the famous "Fvck Off" shout out and Jay is tossing compliments his way. I guess that means the arrogant prick may be back next year so we may have to put up with him and Angelo. Damn!!!!

I'm just glad to see Cutler getting time to throw and running the offense the way he thinks it should have bee run from the start. Ordinarily I'd tip my hat to Martz too but if he'd been doing it this way since the start of the season like he assured us all in the preseason he would this article by Jensen probably never gets written.

Realistically, we should be about 6-2 instead of 5-3. Of the three losses we have incurred, one of them, the loss to the Lions, was avoidable. If we had had the offensive line at the beginning of the season that we have right now, we might be looking at a 7-1 record as opposed to a 5-3 one. The only game I saw that we really had no chance in was the Saints game, mainly because he put up 31 points on us. I'm interested to see now if we will be able to run the ball on Green Bay down towards the end of the season. If we can do that and pass with some efficiency sans the drops from Roy Williams and Sanzenbacher, I think we will be competitive against the Packers.

I think we're almost always competitive with the Packers it just that of late we've ended up a day late and a dollar short. We could help ourselves a lot by not letting them get an early lead and forcing us to play catch up. That seems to beat us as much as anything.

I figure that by seasons end if our offense has improved a lot so will their defense at it'll be a dogfight just like it always is. I don't see them falling apart in the second half so the best we can hope for is to face them in the playoffs again and turn the table around the other way. We take the season ender and playoff game this year.

The chances that the Packers make it through the rest of the season without a loss are slim-to-none. There have been many teams over the years who started out on hot streaks like the Packers have this year, and only a few of them went on to be championship caliber clubs. I will go on record by saying that the Packers will lose at least two games out of the remaining schedule - once to the Giants, and once to the Bears. They might still have difficulties against Oakland and the Dr. Jekyll/Mr. Hyde of the NFL, the Kansas City Chiefs. Let's not forget that the Packers play the Detroit Lions on Thanksgiving. You know that I'm going to be all excited and ready for the Lions to whip the Packers and turn them into the turkey dinner that day. Also, the Packers play the Lions again on January 1st. That should be an interesting game because by then, we will know if Detroit is either in-like-Flynn into the playoffs, are fighting for a spot, or are out of it altogether.

There is a very, very slim chance that, by season's end, we could be in the chase for a division title. A lot will depend on how teams approach stopping the Packer offensive machine. Frankly, I think teams don't put enough emphasis on beating them at the point of attack; by that, I mean that teams don't try to completely shut down the running game. They have one of the worst running games in the entire NFL. Yet, when we played them, we were not able to stop that from balancing out their passing game. Rodgers doesn't lead the league in passing yards, and that's because he "dinks-and-dunks" all over the place. I firmly believe that playing a defensive strategy like we did against Philadelphia will be a major key for our defense toward "shutting down" the most prolific offense in the NFC. They are NOT balanced, so playing them like we did in the NFC Championship Game, along with placing a mirror on Jermichael Finley, is an absolute must. Greg Jennings is going to get his yards; he always does. I'm just eager to see what our answer is to Finley, since he was the figure who destroyed our secondary the last time.

At the worst we should come through the next 6 games 4-2 if we play heads up ball and if the Oline can dominate everyone as well as they did on Monday 6-0 isn't out of the question. That brings us into the next Packer game at anywhere from 9-5 to 11-3. Nine and five and we're still challenging for a playoff spot but at 11-3 we can be challenging them for an NFC Championship.

A lot of how we come into that game is on Cutler's shoulders. He's got to play error free ball if we're gonna climb back into the thick of things.

I've noticed that Cutler has played largely error-free football; he's been the ultimate game manager with the ability to take the team on his back and win games by himself (see the Atlanta game). I mean, I believe he's got 10 touchdowns and 6 interceptions through the first eight games. Though I wish the touchdown total were a little higher, the total number of interceptions is no doubt very impressive. He's only on pace to toss 12 interceptions. I'm not so concerned with the touchdown total, though it would be cool if he could get 25 touchdown passes. It just shows that the majority of our points are put up by the ground game inside the 20s.

One thing that has to get better is third-down conversions. I think going into the game against the Eagles, the offense was only converting 29% of 3rd Downs into 1st Downs. Despite that, we are averaging an even-25 points per game. Compare that to last year when we only scored decimal points over 20 points per game. That must mean that we don't find ourselves in 3rd Down situations too often if we're putting up those kinds of numbers statistically on offense.
