Tillman Plays Megatron Like a Violin But Still Gets No Love..........

Charles Tillman makes sure Calvin Johnson fails his physical exam

Bears cornerback Charles Tillman considers Calvin Johnson the NFL’s top receiver. So Tillman had a modest goal when the Bears coaching staff challenged him to shadow the 6-5 specimen the entire game.
“I know there are some plays he’s going got get,” Tillman told the Sun-Times. “But I need to make more plays than him.

“I have the utmost respect for Calvin Johnson; he’s the best receiver in the league. He’s a hell of a competitor, and it was two gladiators going at it. But I believe competition brings out the best in you, and it came out of me tonight.”

Heading into the game, Johnson told the Detroit Free Press he had a special touchdown celebration planned. Last year, in the season opener, Johnson had a controversial game-winning touchdown overturned because he didn’t fully control the ball. In a 24-13 victory over the Bears on Oct. 10 at Ford Field, Johnson had five catches for 130 yards, including a 73-yard touchdown that wasn’t against Tillman. But by the time Johnson hauled in his only meaningful catch Sunday — a 40-yarder in the third quarter — the Lions trailed 37-6.

“I really just wanted to be physical with him,” Tillman said. “The equalizer in football is hitting.“And we all, as a team, did that.” Physicality was what was missing in the October game, Tillman said, and he and his defensive teammates resolved to ensure history didn’t repeat itself Sunday at Soldier Field.

Instead, the Bears rewound even further back. “The last time we played them on Monday night, they outhit us,” Tillman said, “and the one thing we needed to change is to be more physical. We played Monsters of the Midway defense. We got back to our roots — grass roots.”

Tillman had five tackles, defended three passes and picked off one pass that he returned 44 yards for a touchdown.

“We know what type of player Peanut is,” Bears defensive end Israel Idonije said. “That’s why our coaches put him in those situations, because we know he can carry that load. He can shadow, and be a pest for whoever he’s covering and really suffocate them, and he did that.”

Johnson was targeted for a game-high 19 passes, but he caught just seven of them for 81 yards. With the exception of a few plays, Tillman exclusively covered Johnson. (Yeah and it 6 for 41 yards before his only big catch of the night)

Afterwards, Johnson was ready to move on.“I missed a lot of opportunities,” Johnson said. “But hey, football things happen, and we just have to put this behind us.”

In his ninth NFL season, Tillman has yet to play in the Pro Bowl, something that makes middle linebacker Brian Urlacher upset.
(And that's a shame because he deserves it)

“He always has one [a Pro Bowl year],” Urlacher said, “but no one gives him credit.” Urlacher suggested that Tillman’s lack of picks may be the reason, although he’s consistently among the best in the league at forcing fumbles.
(I guess they overlook that stat)

For his part, the 30-year-old Tillman said he feels like he’s having his best season yet. “The thing I try to do is not give up big plays, and create some turnovers. They haven’t been there, like I want them to,” Tillman said of turnovers. “But I haven’t been giving up big plays, and that’s my No. 1 job. Keep my guy from scoring. For the most part, that’s been a success.”

The Lions had five turnovers in the previous eight games, but they had six against the Bears. Urlacher can’t remember a more remarkable performance from his unit. “I don’t think we’ll lose too many games playing like that on defense,” Urlacher said. “That’s as dominant as I’ve been around. They had yards — whatever.

“But we got takeaways when we needed to, and scored with them.” Tillman said the entire defense was in a zone, which made Sunday so memorable. “Everyone is making plays; that’s why you play the game,” Tillman said. “For the love of it. You saw the kid in every player on defense today. That’s what made it fun.” (I hope it's recess every game from here on out)

I do think it's a shame Peanut has never gotten pro bowl recognition for his play. He always brings his "A" game against the best. If they added all of his forced fumbles and his tackles to his picks he'd be a pro bowler most years. Teams throw at him because he doesn't have the rep of being unbeatable but on one embarasses him.

If we had Champ Bailey playing opposite him we'd have the two best senior citizen CB's in football. LOL

If forced fumbles and recoveries were as sexy as picks, he'd be a perennial pro bowler

27 forced fumbles. I wish it listed how many of those resulted in turnovers. That's the problem with..I guess media? When talking about a DB they only talk about his picks. Not too mention that we play a ton of zone, which arguably will result in less int's. Against Detroit, Marinelli had him and Jennings in man and peanut showed he can still bring it.

And that's in 8 1/2 seasons so he averages 6 1/2 turnovers a year. There aren't many CB's in the NFL who average 6+ turnover a year and have never made a pro bowl appearance. He's a smart players who just quietly goes about his job but he's nobodies patsy. Did you see who he was tangling with during that scrum? It was one of the Lions 330 lb OT's.

Here's a bit more on the man from the Bears Site.

November 14, 2011Tillman put clamps on Lions star receiver

By: Larry Mayer | Last Updated: 11/14/2011 5:19 PM

About the only surprise after the Bears’ lopsided win over the Lions was that Charles Tillman didn’t follow Pro Bowl receiver Calvin Johnson onto Detroit’s bus for the trip to the airport. The veteran cornerback shadowed Johnson just about everywhere else Sunday, allowing him to catch just seven of the 19 passes that were thrown his way in the Bears’ 37-13 victory. (He would have if they'd let him if for no other reason than to get a couple more swings at Cherilus)

“Charles Tillman, I could talk about him quite a bit,” coach Lovie Smith said Monday at Halas Hall. “Putting our game plan in, we let Charles know what he was doing for the game. He was going to guard their best receiver all day.”Tillman responded to the challenge, breaking up three passes and returning an interception 44 yards for a touchdown after jumping a slant route to Johnson, who leads the NFL with 11 TD catches. Tillman also tackled Johnson a yard short of a first down on a third-down play in the second quarter, forcing a punt. (I'd say that's one hell of a day for a 30 year old CB against a guy who many say is the best in the NFL)

While Tillman has excelled in previous years, he’s arguably having the best season since he joined the Bears in 2003 as a second-round draft pick from Louisiana-Lafayette. “Every year the mission is to have a career year,” Tillman said. “Coach [Rod] Marinelli challenges everyone to have a career year and I think a lot of guys are having a career year right now.” (Pro Bowl this year for about half the defense)

    Heave-ho:

Smith wasn’t happy that D.J. Moore got ejected from Sunday’s game for retaliating against Matthew Stafford. But the Bears coach felt that Stafford also deserved to be kicked out after throwing Moore to the ground by his helmet during Tim Jennings’ interception return.

“First off, you shouldn’t retaliate on something that happens,” Smith said. “Officials are supposed to be looking at the instigator in situations like that. D.J. was not. Stafford grabbed him by his helmet. You can’t do that either. In those situations, I can understand the officials throwing out one guy—D.J.—but it seemed like both guys should have been thrown out in that situation.” (It takes more balls than those refs had to throw a starting QB out of a game but it should have been done. Actually they probably would have been doing him a favor. If Gooddell doesn't hand down a hefty fine to Stafford for instigating that mess something is really wrong with his enforcement system)

The confrontation between Moore and Stafford led to a melee between several players from both teams.
“Things did get out of hand a little bit,” Smith said. “I mean, we’re not looking for that. I think there’s plenty of time during the course of the game to show how tough you are, who’s the most physical football team and all of that, and I think that happened yesterday.”

    Head games:

While the officials failed to call three unnecessary roughness penalties that could have been whistled against the Lions, they did flag Lance Briggs for hitting Johnson over the middle on a 4-yard reception. (Another bullshit call. Briggs led with his shoulder and the helmet contact was incidental. The rules regarding these type of calls need revision. But it really was a thing of beauty wasn't it. A real de-cleater and it had Urlacher whooping it up just after it happened. Even though we drew a penalty it was worth it as a payback for the hit on Cutler by Fairley)

It was a violent collision, but Briggs appeared to lead with his shoulder, not his head. “I do think we’re maybe going a little bit too far,” Smith said. “I’m all for protection and all of that too. But it just seems like sometimes things are called a little bit based on the reaction of the offensive player—and I’ve been on both sides of that.

“Looking at Lance Briggs’ hit yesterday, yeah, it was a big hit. But it’s a physical football game too. I don’t think there was anything flagrant he was trying to do on that. He didn’t necessarily lead with his head.” (He didn't and if you try to take things like that out of the game you ruin it. NFL football is a tough game and a 240 lb WR doesn't need protection from a 240 LB)

    Legal hit:

Middle linebacker Brian Urlacher was even more adamant that Briggs didn’t deserve a penalty. Asked what happened on the play, Urlacher said: “He knocked the [stuffing ] ("stuffing" spelled c..r..a..p) out of him, that’s what happened.

"I don’t know why it was a penalty. What are you supposed to do? He hit him with his shoulder, turned his head to the side. It was full speed contact. Lance is a big guy. Guys are going to go backwards when they hit him.” (And that's what happened alright. All 240 lbs of Megatron became Megamush for a minute there)
I'm getting to that age where a lifetime warranty just doesn't mean as much to me anymore as an afternoon nap.
