Bennett's Boon is Other Recievers Bane...............

Earl Bennett’s bonanza comes at a cost to other receivers
    November 15, 2011 8:34PM

Here’s the catch. Since returning from injury, Earl Bennett (right) has become Jay Cutler’s favorite target the last two games.

    Player Catches Yds TD
    Earl Bennett 11 176 1
    Roy Williams 3 46 0
    Johnny Knox 2 32 0
    Matt Forte 1 20 0
    Sam Hurd 1 21 0
    Devin Hester 1 12 0
    Dane Sanzenbacher 0 0 0
    Updated: November 16, 2011 2:43PM

The return of Earl Bennett has been a boon for Jay Cutler. But it has been a bust for every other Bears wide receiver.

Bennett has been even better than expected since returning from a nagging chest bruise that forced him to miss five games. In two games, he has 11 receptions for 176 yards (16.0 per catch) and one touchdown. Seven of his catches have been for first downs — four of those were third-down conversions. Five have come with more than 10 yards to go for a first down. One was for a touchdown. But now that Cutler has his security blanket back, it seems like he doesn’t want to play with any of his other toys. Johnny Knox has two catches for 32 yards since Bennett returned. Devin Hester has one catch for 12 yards. Rookie Dane Sanzenbacher, who looked like he was turning into Cutler’s go-to guy — five catches against the Packers, six against the Lions at Ford Field — has disappeared. (yeah but he was dropping too many so this figures)

And Cutler’s promising connection with Roy Williams — if more than one catch in three consecutive games can be considered proof of a budding rapport — fizzled noticeably Sunday against the Lions. They miscommunicated on Cutler’s first pass to Williams when Cutler threw long and Williams went short. Cutler went back to Williams in the third quarter, but Williams couldn’t handle a well-thrown but well-defended pass. (I thought this was supposes to be a newspaper. This isn't news)

That was it for Roy (no catches, no yards). And for Jay, too. Cutler threw behind Kellen Davis on the next play and did not complete a pass the rest of the game — he was 0-for-5 in the second half.
Cutler’s step back hardly registered in a game dominated by the Bears’ defense and special teams. But with the weather about to turn and the stakes about to rise, it’s a little discomforting to have an offense so tethered to the quirkiness of Cutler. He’s locked in with Bennett, which is great. But Bennett has 53 percent of Cutler’s passing yards in the last two games — an unhealthy percentage almost no matter who’s catching the ball. (And no matter how good the defense plays this has to change. Our entire offense can't be built around two players and a QB)

There’s no need to panic with the Bears 6-3 and behind only the Packers in the NFC. But at this point, it seems like the Bears would be better off acquiring Cutler’s old receivers from Vanderbilt than waiting for him to develop a connection with his other receivers.

‘‘It takes time,’’ Cutler said. ‘‘I’ve been with Earl for a long time, thrown a lot of balls to him. I’m getting there with a lot of those guys — Johnny and Devin and even Roy and those guys. We’re getting there. It doesn’t happen overnight.’’

Well, it doesn’t here, anyway. But with all due respect to the progress Cutler has made this season — on and off the field — the quarterback-receiver connection isn’t so problematic in other places. Brandon Lloyd, the former Bear, joined one of the worst offenses in the NFL in St. Louis in midstream a month ago. He already has played with two quarterbacks — A.J. Feeley and Sam Bradford. And he has 21 receptions for 255 yards and two touchdowns in four games. Only Bennett can come close to that on the Bears.

And two rookies, Andy Dalton and A.J. Green, are off to a fast start in Cincinnati. Green has 41 receptions for 635 yards (15.5 per catch) and six touchdowns. Of course, Green was the No. 4 pick in the draft. But what about Denarius Moore? He’s a fifth-round pick with the Raiders who has 23 receptions for 396 yards (17.2 yards per catch) and four touchdowns — from three quarterbacks. He caught five passes for 123 yards and two touchdowns against the Chargers on Thursday from Carson Palmer, who had been in Oakland all of three weeks. How does that work?

‘‘That happens,’’ Williams said. ‘‘It happened with Jon Kitna [in Detroit]. I played with so many different quarterbacks, and then Kitna came and boom. It just depends on the personnel.’’

Indeed it does. (yeah, kind of funny YOU should say that Roy)

I'll keep harping on this until it changes. I posted a thread earlier in the week that says we should be throwing more to Knox and I believe that's true and I think once Sanz gets over his case of the rookie dropsies he should be getting more playing time too.

It's too easy for teams to focus on shutting down Bennett and Forte just like we did with the Lions. Bennett will alwats get his share of opportunities and he should be starting but I'd try Knox opposite him for a couple of games. He's not worse than Williams and he was out leading receiver last year.

Totally agree. The kid isn't the toughest...actually, I think it's more of a strength thing with Knox, but he can catch a ball. You don't see him drop many. Hester on the other hand can't catch a cold unless he's wide-WIDE-open.

we shouldn't throw the ball to Knox or RWill. We should throw it to Sanz, Bennett and a guy like Edwards or Lloyd or what ever WRs could be had

The Bears receiver woes (beyond Bennett) continue...

Sanz had a promising start but has had a flurry of inexcusible drops the last 4 weeks or so. He was wide open in the flat and would have had an easy first down vs. the Eagles and let a well-thrown ball literally fly through all 4 limbs virtually untouched. That latest drop cost us 7 points because Forte had a rare fumble return for TD on the very next snap. I'm pulling for the kid--cinderella story at first--but when you're neither big nor fast there's no way to rationalize repeated drops in the open field like that.

Williams seems more interested in drawing marginal PI calls and making his stupid "first down" taunts then he does in consistently getting open and making big catches. In all fairness, I watched his "drop" vs. the Lions on slo-mo replay and it was just a really good breakup by the DB, not a true drop. Of course, RW has had his share of those too and for a guy with his size he should be making way more middle-field receptions than he has.

Hester just can't seem to make the transition to a credible WR. We have all seen how his speed seems to go for naught because he doesn't make many deep catches unless he's really open. Frustrating...

Knox--I have to disagree a little with you here--has really dropped off this year. Part is definitely that he's seeing fewer snaps but he has also had a number of balls fall incomplete that he should have caught. He had a key pass on 3rd and long vs. GB which would have been a 20yd pickup literally HIT HIM IN THE FACEMASK. It was well thrown and he had a step. The dude seems to have a problem with alligator arms over the middle--he catches the ball with his body rather than with his hands out front too often so unless it hits him soft in the belly, he's not all that reliable. Plus, he cuts his slants short and runs crappy routes.

Is it any secret why Cutler throws to Bennett when he really needs a play? He's shorter than RW and slower than Knox/Hester but he actually gets open and actually catches the ball. The guy was practically a god against Philly...

No question IMO that Bennett should start ahead of Williams with one of speed guys (Knox, I guess) on the other side but it's very obvious how badly we need a true, unequivocal bonafide #1 WR rather than this "committee".

I think that's a really good breakdown of our WR's MP. Pretty much hit's the nail on the head.

No question Bennett should be playing ahead of RWill as the "between the numbers" guy. For a guy with his size and strength he should be a friggin' "bully" out there but he's not. He needs to fight the defenders off, do a better job of shielding with his body (that was my criticism of that break up Sunday) and stop looking for a flag everytime they don't connect. He cleary read his route wrong on the first incompletion Sunday. He broke off the route and the ball sailed ten yards past him. Cutler won't keep going to him as long as that keeps up so he may just as well sit. He's virtually useless because you can't depend upon to either be where he needs to be or catch it when he does.

Unfortunately we get about 2/3 rds of a speed receiver out of the combination of Knox and Hester. Knox can get open and gather in the deep ball fairly well but he suffers in the short game on slants and as you pointed out he has a HS players tendency to catch with his chest and not his hands. That limits his reach and it's the reason for some near misses unless Cutler puts it right in his breadbasket. Hester is much better in the shorter slants and crossing routes but he just can't seem to adjust to the long ball if he's covered. It's almost like the punt he dropped Sunday before returning it for the TD. He struggles with over the shoulder catches like an outfielder who has trouble chasing down a fly ball that's over his head and he has to turn and retreat for.

Sanz needs to get his head out of his ass and catch the ball. He has no speed but he does have short area quickness and manueverability on his side. You're dead on about that drop prior to Forte's fumble and the TD. If he catches that ball the next play never happens. Can't figure that out because he was all hands in the preseason and the first few games. Maybe just a bad streak that he'll snap out of but for now he's getting the end of the bench treatment until he improves. I still think the guy will be fine in the long run.

I wish they'd use Hurd more on the offense. The guy is every bit as good a blocker as RWill is supposed to be and he's far more dependable. I think he also has a big speed advantage over RWill. He may not have RWill's bulk but since he doesn't use it anyway what difference does it make. Whatever the solution we need at least one of the speedier guys, Knox, Hester or Hurd to step of their game and take some of the heat off Bennett. We need to at least have a downfield threat to make those play fakes work.

LMAO at that one. Frustrating to watch cuz you know the kid would be valueable if he got himself back to his old form. I hope he does soon.

I think we see eye-to-eye on our assesments of Hester, Knox, and Roy and I agree that seeing more of Hurd would be good. In the few pass plays he's been involved, he made good catches in traffic and looked tough (if undersized). The guy is gold on ST too.

I know it's way early to be talking about this but humor me...what could we realistically get for Knox (draft pick wise) in an offseason trade???

I just don't see much reason to keep RW or Knox for 2012 and RW is only on a one-year deal.

PS: Soul, I'll be at Bears/Broncos game, hope you can get tix.

Hester's a much better receiver than he's given credit for. I see a few catches here where he's not quite "wide-WIDE-open"....

But on a lot of them he is. You only see one or two where he goes up and get's it. Nobody says the guy can't catch at all but he's not what we need for a #1 WR.

I listened to the 'Bears All Access' show on 'The Score' last night and Zach Zaidman had Earl Bennett and Roy Williams on. Roy made several comments about Earl getting most of the passes thrown his way and played it off as "Earl and Jay know each other from Vanderbilt, and have been playing together for a long time, so that's why this is happening.". Nothing about the passes he's dropped or the lack of production since he's been a Bear. What surprised me was that usually Zach doesn't really ask any tough questions of the players he has on the show. But last night he asked Roy more than once why he hasn't been more productive and whether or not he understands the fans and media being less than positive about him so far. Roy just said that he's playing a different position than he has his entire career, on the other side of the ball, and he's still learning it. What?! Zach also asked if he thought that Cutler was the best QB he's ever played with and at first he said 'Yes' but then said that Jon Kitna is the most competitive person at the positiion that he's ever played with but quickly said "Jay is really competitive too though.".
