Bears Confident EWill Can Do The Job and Other News...............

    Bears confident in Williams

After year of seasoning, Martz certain guard up to starting task
By Vaughn McClure, Chicago Tribune reporter 8:26 p.m. CST, November 16, 2011

Last year, maybe Mike Martz wouldn't have felt so comfortable turning to Edwin Williams.

The Bears offensive coordinator praised Williams as a physical, prototypical offensive guard, but Martz realized his complex scheme was too much for the inexperienced Williams to digest initially.

"He wasn't ready for that,'' Martz said. "The new system, getting used to everything. He got a little overwhelmed.''

The 6-foot-3, 315-pound Williams, who started three games at right guard last season, will start his first game at left guard Sunday because starter Chris Williams is on injured reserve after dislocating his wrist.

"Having been here now for a while and been through the preseason, we feel very good about (Edwin Williams),'' Martz said. "He's ready to play."

Williams' insertion means the Bears will have their sixth different starting offensive line in 10 games, but the same line started the previous four games. In those four contests, the Bears allowed just five sacks as compared to 18 through the first five.

The Chargers, Sunday's opponent at Soldier Field, ranks 13th in the league in sacks per pass play.

Injury update: Receiver/kick returner Devin Hester returned to practice Wednesday but was limited coming off an ankle injury. Hester, named the NFC's Special Teams Player of the Week after his 82-yard punt return touchdown, only played special teams versus the Lions while nursing his ankle and recovering from strep throat.

Defensive end Julius Peppers was held out of practice as he continues to recover from an MCL sprain in his left knee. He was held out of practice last Wednesday and Thursday but still dominated the Lions.

Peppers and tackle Gabe Carimi (knee surgery) were the only players to be held out of practice.

"Peppers should be fine,'' coach Lovie Smith said.

Carimi walked around Halas Hall Wednesday without a limp, just a few days after having his right knee scoped. He politely declined to talk about his status.

Linebacker Lance Briggs (neck) and running back Matt Forte (shoulder) were limited, while defensive tackle Matt Toeaina (knee) had full participation.

In San Diego, the Chargers placed four-time Pro Bowl offensive guard Kris Dielman on injured reserve after he suffered a concussion and seizure. The Chargers could be down three offensive line starters with guard Louis Vazquez (ankle) and tackle Marcus McNeill (neck) sidelined Wednesday.

Coach Norv Turner said receiver Malcom Floyd (hip) doesn't look good for Sunday, and five other Chargers didn't practice Wednesday, including ex-Bear defensive tackle Antonio Garay (hip).

Extra points: Nickel back D.J. Moore said Wednesday he had yet to receive word from the NFL on whether he was fined for hitting Lions quarterback Matthew Stafford. The hit led to Moore's ejection. … The Bears put offensive lineman Jordan Black through a workout Wednesday. Black, who played his college ball at Notre Dame, last played for the Jaguars and once played for Mike Tice with the Jaguars. He could be signed Monday. … Hester leads all NFC returners in Pro Bowl voting with 101,932 votes. Forte is second at running back with 348,880 votes, behind Vikings star Adrian Peterson (469,117).

EWill looked pretty good during the preseason so let's hope he's got it together now as well. We need some help from him for the rest of the season. No too worried about Carimi but I'm guessing we won't be back for another two weeks. I think they'll want to give him plenty of time to work back in slowly and as long as the status quo is working there's no rush.

We've got some reserve strength on the PS and it looks like we may be taking on another guy after the weekend. Anyone or anything besides OMG please!!!!! We just need to keep the five we've got healthy now intact.

Not worried about either Pep or Devin either. Keeping them out of practice just means they get more rest to save energy for game day. Hester doesn't figure all that much in the passing game now that Bennett is back so let him rest so he's fresh for his return game. And Peppers plays better on an injured knee than every other DE we have does on two good legs. If there's a guy who doesn't need practice it's him. Just set him out there on Sunday and turn him loose.

Sounds like the "Bolts" have even more Oline problems than we do. Dielman is probably their best and he's out and two others are hurting. This would be a great week to boost sack totals. Rivers gets really frustrated when he doesn't get protection and starts to loose it. Once he gets into his bitching mode he's done for the day so we need to get in his face early and put him an his ass. He doesn't respond well to that at all.

Just gotta keep good Oline play going and get Forte back on track this week and the defense has to put pressure on Rivers. He's way too good to give much time to and Jackson and Gates can kill us if we let them.

Things that stuck out to me from that article:

D.H. is in first place for pro bowl voting as a returner, and needs more votes,

M.F. is second to Adrian Peterson in pro bowl votes for RB's, and needs more votes.

I already voted a bunch of times from several different computers, every little bit helps....

Is the voting being done on the NFL Site BossK? I'm sure we could pitch a few more votes their way. Hester is a shoe in as a returner but Graham should make it as a coverage specialist too. He leads the team in ST tackles again and that was a really nice pick he had in the Lions game. I doubt DJ would have gotten to that one so we know we have a decent backup at NB in him as well.

Forte won't beat out AP even if he out gains him. Forte is one of those guys whose gonna fight for getting the credit for being that good his whole career much like Neal Anderson. Of course Neal didn't have an AP in the same conference so he actually made 4 pro-bowls and was an MVP in two of them.

Tillman is another guy who should finally get some postseason recognition. I think this is the best year he's had in his entire career especially after the job he did on Megatron last Sunday. Between his picks and his forced fumbles the guy is the #1 turnover machine in the league and he should get some love for that. Briggs, Uralcher and Pep are shoe ins but it makes no difference since it's unlikely they'd play anyway. Still nice to get the recognition though.

Ya, at NFL.com. Our votes only count a little, I am not sure of the percentage, but in true homerish style, I voted for all the bears I could find on the list.

Gotcha, I'll head over there and put in some plugs for our guys. Tillman and Graham are two unsung heroes who deserve the honors.
