    Grading The Game..................

    Grading the Bears vs. Chargers
    BY NEIL HAYES nhayes@suntimes.com November 20, 2011 8:18PM
Here’s how the Sun-Times grades the Bears in their 31-20 victory over the Chargers on Sunday:

Quarterback (A) Cutler made some gorgeous throws and was efficient in compiling a 124.9 rating.

Running backs (C-) Matt Forte and Marion Barber got tough yards in the fourth quarter, helping the Bears limit the Chargers to 35 seconds of time of possession in the final period. Otherwise, they averaged 3.0 per carry.

Receivers (A) Earl Bennett was Earl Bennett. Johnny Knox set up one touchdown and scored another. Roy Williams had five grabs for 62 yards. Blocking tight end Matt Spaeth got into the act with a nobody-saw-that-coming screen pass for a 13-yard gain on third down.

Offensive line (B-) The Bears managed 2.9 yards per carry behind the patchwork unit against a defense ranked 24th against the run. On the other hand, they did not allow a sack for the second time in three games.

Defensive line (C) Even though the Chargers had three starters and two backup offensive linemen injured, the Bears couldn’t produce a sack. They did hold San Diego to 52 rushing yards on 17 carries.

Linebackers (B) Brian Urlacher and Lance Briggs combined for a forced fumble and nine tackles, which is below their normal output. They missed some tackles early before settling down.

Secondary (B) Charles Tillman had a tough day covering Vincent Jackson, but those back-shoulder throws are tough to defend. Tillman compensated with another forced fumble. Major Wright had an interception for the third straight game and Corey Graham got another late pick.

Special teams (A-) Devin Hester had a 37-yard return and had two others called back. Graham downed a punt on the three. Gould had a 42-yard field goal and Adam Podlesh a 55-yard punt.

Coaching (A-) The Bears didn’t play their best, but they won a potential trap game to remain on a roll. One question: Why not save the fake punt for a more meaningful moment? (That move gets an F)

Cutler's best game and he has to get a serious injury. The Chargers took Forte away so he put the offense on his back and carried it. Great game and a definite A. Johnny Knox should be kicking himself for the pick that caused the injury. These guys play on that turf enough to know where the bad spots are.

Running backs did what they needed to do. Barber's running style would have been more effective against them and I thought he should have gotten more carries. Forte finally found some cutback lanes later but it couldn't make up for getting stuffed to begin with. C is a fair grade.

I'd knock the receivers down a half step to an A-. Cutler got the ball to them on some terrific throws but we had a big drop by RWill on that first possession and Knox slip is what caused the pick on an otherwise perfect pass. That cost us Cutler as well. Knox makes some great plays but always seems to have at least one bonehead one per game and it usually costs us a pick. Was it my imagination or was Bennett wearing black spats over his orange shoes???

Oline did ok given another change in personnel. Chargers got some pressure but Cutler had enough of a pocket to escape. No sacks again and EWill stepped up nicely. They aren't the Bruise Brothers yet but they are getting better.

Dline gets knocked down to a C-. No sacks against that patchwork line is sad. I don't know what Marinelli needs to do to fix that problem but he needs to fix it. If we could have gotten to Rivers early those long completions to Jackson don't happen. We finally started to get to him in the latter part of the game when Pep moved inside. Why did it take all game long to make that move???

Linebacking gets a B but Briggs earns an F for his crappy coverage of TE's. TE caught just three TD's on us all last year and we've given up 8 or 9 so far this year. Maybe we need to assign goaline coverage of the TE to someone else if Briggs can't handle it. He plays the run like a demon but his coverage skills are slipping.

Secondary gets upped a half step to B+ for coming up big when we needed it. Got a TD off of Peanut's forced fumble and Wright saved a TD. That's 14 points difference in the balance. Jackson undressed Tillman but the pass rush sucked. You cann't give that combo that kind of time and not expect bad things to happen. Vincent Jackson is a very underated WR.

ST's would have earned an A if the KOR coverage was better. Was it because Graham was not playing? Podlesh had a great day punting and a horseshit debut as a QB. Dumb play call at that point in the game. Never give a team a chance to get back in the game like that. Robbie is Robbie, what can you say. He's mastered those treacherous SF winds pretty well. Kudos to Clutts too if for no other reason than the fact that he didn't screw up.

Coaching I give a B-. Martz probably did a better job of play calling this week than he has all year but that stands to reason since we passed a lot. He must have had a hard time trying to conceal an erection when Cutler hit "hotdog" three times in a row. He also called a pass to a TE. No not the TD either. That was all Cutler because Davis was probably his third read. The F- Lovie gets for that stupid fake punt and the timeout right before a missed FG should drop the grade but since we won I'm feeling generous.

Nice win on the field but a tought loss off of it. If Cutler has to have surgery and is out for the rest of the regular season we're still no shoe in for the playoffs unless Hanie is up to the challenge. Looks like that's the way it's goin' down though.
