Cutler Surgery Successful Now Rehab Begins...

    Updated: November 23, 2011, 5:33 PM ET
Jay Cutler can start rehab soon

Chicago Bears quarterback Jay Cutler underwent surgery on his fractured right thumb on Wednesday in Vail, Colo., and he'll be able to begin rehab in a couple of days, the team announced via Twitter.

Bears coach Lovie Smith said Monday that he believes Cutler could return to the field near the tail end of the regular season.

"The plan is to get him back at the latter part of the regular season," Smith told reporters. "This is what I wanted to know, 'Was it a season-ending injury?' No. From what I've been told right now, we can expect him back at the end of the regular season. For me, that's enough to go on."

Cutler suffered the thumb injury with just less than 10 minutes remaining in the fourth quarter of the Bears' 31-20 win over San Diego while trying to make a tackle following an interception. Despite the broken thumb, Cutler managed to stay in the game and complete his final two passes for 24 yards in the team's final drive.

Caleb Hanie has been named the Bears' starting quarterback when the club travels to Oakland to face the Raiders on Sunday.

"I reached out to him (on Tuesday), and just asked about his surgery and all that stuff to see if he's OK," Hanie said. "He's all good. He's in good spirits.

"As any athlete who gets injured, it's a bummer at the time but he'll be back quick. I'm confident in it."

The Bears signed Josh McCown on Wednesday to back up Hanie.

I would really be stoked if we could get him back by Christmas, thus him being my Christmas miracle this year.

Ah Dags, Christmas miracles are usually babies born on Christmas Day. You sure you want baby Jay?

What I want is my Pro Bowl QB back in the starting lineup and healthy. If he comes back playing at the level that he was playing, and if we ever get him the WRs it will take to properly run Martz's made-over offense, Cutler could become the next Aaron Rodgers. That would even up a lot of things within our division against the Packers.

Gotta feelin' were just one healty year away Dags. The line is starting to come together. Having to pull some good play out of that start mssing their two best guys bodes well for next year. EWill played pretty well last week and next year he may be the worst Olineman on the team. A year playing together will make a huge difference and if we can one more guy to compete with Webb we neve see OMG or his kind again.

WR need is obvious. When RWill actually catches balls and becomes a receving threat along with Bennett the ball moves. There isn't anyway they can keep saying they're happy with present crew when it's so obvious that Cutler needs a bigger target like RWill out there to keep drives alive. We have a very nice speed guy in Knox and a great clutch guy in Bennett and now we need the guy whose in between those two. A guy like Marques Colston or rookies like Floyd or Toon who can play tough physical ball in the middle of the field like Bennett only with more size.

The offense is close and if they learn to come together under Hanie this may actually be a blessing in disguise because they each have to do more now with Cutler out. No more looking at the other guy. Each man has to give 110%.
