    Hanie

    Hanie assumes command

Backup QB and offensive coordinator both express confidence in his ability

By Brad Biggs, Chicago Tribune reporter 8:15 p.m. CST, November 23, 2011

If you were worried there could be rocky ground for Caleb Hanie and offensive coordinator Mike Martz to cover as the backup quarterback takes over in the thick of a playoff race, the two did their best to put even the most skeptical observers at ease.

What a difference 10 months makes. Last season the Bears turned to Todd Collins in the third quarter of the NFC championship game loss to the Packers. Hanie entered in the fourth quarter, rallying the offense to two touchdowns before he threw an interception in the end zone in the closing minute after reaching the Packers' 29-yard line.

Hanie practiced with the first-team offense Wednesday for the first time in preparation for Sunday's game against the Raiders in Oakland.

He won't have Kyle Orton looking over his shoulder either, as the Bears' bid to bring back the veteran was foiled when the Chiefs claimed him on waivers. The Bears and Cowboys also submitted claims with Orton going to the team with the poorest record. The Cowboys' bid may have been in an effort to block the Bears from getting Orton more than anything else.

Instead, the Bears signed journeyman Josh McCown to a one-year contract, bringing in a player familiar with Martz's scheme who the club tried to sign last summer. Hanie clearly is the top man now, and he professes confidence even if the recent past might have rattled him.

"Just like any good marriage, you have some bumps in the road," Hanie said. "But Mike has been great this season and I think riding me hard last season has been nothing but helpful. Sometimes you are reluctant to take the criticism and stuff like that, but looking back it's a good thing."

Hanie had struggles early in training camp but said he believes he has been getting better since ironing out those issues.

Sunday presents a huge opportunity for the 26-year-old who will be a free agent after the season. If Hanie shines in place of Jay Cutler, who had what was termed as successful surgery on his right thumb Wednesday in Vail, Colo., he could set himself up for a decade. If he stumbles, he could play himself out of the NFL.

"It's a great opportunity, but I'm not too worried about down the road," Hanie said. "I'm just trying to focus on what the Raiders do."

Martz said the entire organization is eager to see what Hanie can do with what could be a six-game run as the starter if the Bears' glass half-full projection for Cutler doesn't come through. Martz always has been very harsh with his backups and he uses that to teach not only the starter, but the reserve because he doesn't want to be tearing down his No. 1.

"In my mind, he's a starter in the league," Martz said. "He's just waiting for this opportunity. Otherwise, you don't handle Caleb (tough) like that. You have to stress him and press him a little bit, get him out of his comfort zone so he can deal with some of the emotional ups and downs that come with being a starter in the league. Kind of callous him up a little bit.

"It really solidifies inside of him that he … can handle these things. The biggest issue for good quarterbacks, when things are going bad, you have to be at your best. That's where he is right now.

"Where I would point to is in the NFC championship game. He throws an interception and comes back and we go get a touchdown. That was a huge statement for me. That's the resilience and the toughness you're looking for in a starter."

Hanie conveyed a real belief in himself in his news conference, and that's the same thing teammates have been seeing in him as the events of the last several days unfolded.

"If you don't have that confidence, there's no way you're going to be the next big thing," he said. "I have to play with confidence and see where it leads, take it week to week."

All eyes will be on him, that much is certain.

"I expect for him to come in and get on this train that we're riding," wide receiver Roy Williams said. "He's a ringleader, so we have to have his back."

No-worries Caleb Hanie swears he is up to the challenge
    By Mark Potash mpotash@suntimes.com November 23, 2011 6:56PM

The local media took it easy on Caleb Hanie in his first news conference as the Bears’ starting quarterback — waiting a whole five minutes before asking if he was concerned about his job.
‘‘It won’t affect my confidence at all [if the Bears signed Kyle Orton],’’ Hanie said. ‘‘I know where I am in this offense. I know what I’m doing in this offense. I’ve been waiting for this opportunity. Kyle’s a great guy. I was here with him as a rookie and he did a great job in the locker room and stuff like that. So I like Kyle. It won’t affect my role at all.’’

With an easy smile, a couple of Jay Cutler-related jokes and a comfortable give-and-take with reporters at Halas Hall on Wednesday, Hanie had the confidence of a player who isn’t looking over his shoulder. The Bears paid for their lack of confidence in him last season. With Cutler likely out for the rest of the regular season after having surgery to repair a broken right thumb, they made sure Hanie knows the job is his. The Bears signed veteran Josh McCown later in the day after the Kansas City Chiefs had claimed Orton off waivers, but Caleb is their quarterback.

‘‘I talked to Lovie [Smith] this morning,’’ Hanie said. ‘‘He said, ‘Whatever veteran quarterback we bring in, you don’t need to worry about it. You’re our guy.’’’

It might look like a daunting challenge for Hanie, who has played in seven games in his four seasons with the Bears and will be making his first start against the Oakland Raiders on Sunday in Oakland. But Hanie isn’t looking at it as a challenge. It’s the opportunity of a lifetime. The hard part was making the Bears’ roster after not getting drafted out of Colorado State in 2008.

“You never want it to come at the expense of one of your good friends and close teammates and one of your best players. You never want that to happen,’’ Hanie said. ‘‘But you have to take advantage of opportunities when they’re given to you so that’s what I’m going to try to do.”

The 6-2, 222-pound Hanie lacks experience, but not confidence. He feels good about his performance in the NFC Championship Game against the Packers — when he led two touchdown drives, but threw two interceptions as a third-string emergency fill-in for Cutler. He’s been learning Mike Martz’s offense for as long as Cutler has. And he’s taking over a team that is on a roll.

“I feel very confident in this situation,’’ Hanie said. ‘‘Our defense is playing excellent, taking away the football. Our running game is solid. Matt’s having a Pro Bowl year in my opinion. Our receivers are coming on strong, starting to make plays within the offense. I feel very comfortable. As long as I do my job and get the ball to the playmakers and let them do the hard work and it should be fun.’’

The formula probably won’t be that simple, but Hanie believes he can continue offense’s momentum even though he doesn’t have all of Cutler’s skills. “I feel like we’re pretty similar,’’ Hanie said when asked how similar his game is Cutler’s. ‘‘Our offense is built around being mobile in the pocket and making accurate throws and getting the ball out quick, while … protecting the football. So that plays to my strengths.’’

Bears offensive coordinator Martz sounded as confident as he’s ever been about Hanie. ‘‘I don’t have any reservations about Caleb. I trust him completely,’’ Martz said. ‘‘He’s been preparing for this for a long time. It’s a great opportunity for him. Everybody in this organization is excited for him. We know he’s ready. This’ll be fun. We’re really looking forward to it.’’

Smith was adamant that Hanie be treated like the starting quarterback, not a backup trying to survive. ‘‘We just want Caleb to play within our system and do what he quarterback position tells you to do,’’ Smith said. ‘‘I talked to Caleb this morning and let him know, ‘I’m not going to have you in there every morning [asking] how [are] you feeling? and all that stuff.’ He’ll do a good job at what we ask him to do.’’

Other than my criticisms of the Yankees most likely going to keep both Alex Rodriguez, Mark Texiera, and Nick Swisher in the middle of the lineup and the Yankees hesitance to make a move at signing C.J. Wilson making me cynical like one, you, my friend, are a stereotypical Cubs fan. Hanie is not going to have time to really think about being nervous when he goes out on the field on Sunday. Just relax already! lol. If we run the ball like we can against Oakland and Hanie manages the game and the defense and special teams continue to step up their game, there is no doubt in my mind that we can walk away winners on Sunday evening. It's a little thing called Faith, Benji. Learn to have a little of it unless it's just a foregone conclusion that you are in a no win scenario.

Hanie is going to have to win this game. Not having Cutler, Oakland is gonna stack the box the way the Lions and Chargers did to limit Forte. Even more so now that we do not have a proven QB.

This game is on Hanie. Either that or Forte will have to break through the stacked box

If we have to, we'll run "three yards and a cloud of dust" all day long on Oakland. Remember that they have one of the very worst run defenses in the league. That will set up play action passes for Hanie to be able to get some big gainers against their pathetic defense.

I stand by my thoughts. Until Hanie proves otherwise, they will sell out to stop the run. Forte hasn't done much the past two games with teams doing just that

...and look what happened when the Chargers sold out to stop the run against the Bears? We threw the ball all over the field against them. Hanie could very well do that. You don't know for sure. You already have him pegged as a miserable failure.
