Heat on DLine to Improve Pass Rush........

Heat on Bears' D-line to improve

Pass rush not up to Smith's, Marinelli's standards

By Vaughn McClure, Chicago Tribune reporter 7:35 p.m. CST, November 24, 2011

    The film didn't lie.

Bears coach Lovie Smith and defensive coordinator Rod Marinelli were equally disturbed about the defensive line's performance Sunday in a victory over the Chargers. Not only did the Bears fail to record a sack, they had just one hit on Philip Rivers, not regarded as the most mobile of quarterbacks.

To make matters worse, the front four was up against a Chargers offensive line down three starters.

"That wasn't up to the standard we wanted," Marinelli said. "We drifted behind the quarterback a few times, something you can't do. Our inside moves weren't crisp. In terms of pass rush, it just wasn't good last week."

Smith called out defensive tackle Henry Melton and nose tackle Anthony Adams a few weeks back, encouraging them to step up their games. Both players responded with inspired efforts the next time out.

Nobody escaped Smith's wrath this week.

"We've got to get more from everybody, simple as that," Smith said. "And we've been in their ears, believe me, constantly insisting — not asking — insisting on (the pass rush) getting better."

The Bears enter Sunday's game in Oakland with 18 sacks, one fewer than they had through 10 games last season. They stood second-to-last in the league in sacks per pass play before Thursday's games.

And this is the same defense that sacked Falcons quarterback Matt Ryan five times in the season opener, save for Julius Peppers and Matt Toeaina battling knee sprains.

"We've got to get better," Melton said.

Sunday would be a good time to start, although the Raiders have relied heavily on the legs of running back Michael Bush recently. They're ninth in the league in sacks allowed, thanks in large part to the success of the running game.

Quarterback Carson Palmer, however, was sacked four times Sunday in a victory over the Vikings, though he also completed 17 of 23 passes for 164 yards and a touchdown.

Peppers leads the Bears with six sacks and can be a disruptive force even without getting to the quarterback, but he needs help. Israel Idonije got some good pressure in spots last week but didn't have the numbers to prove it.

"Every week it's a challenge," Idonije said. "We did some things (last week) that if we could do again, we'd probably take back. But there were times where we got close, where I got close. I'm reaching, reaching and the ball is out.

"A lot of that stuff is on us. We've got to execute a little bit better on our game plan."

The plan might involve more blitzing, an aspect largely missing from the defense's arsenal in recent games. Nickel back D.J. Moore is a big part of the blitz package, but a sprained left ankle might keep Moore sidelined for a second consecutive game.

"We didn't blitz much last week, and that could help," Marinelli said. "There are little things we will have to improve, and we will. The pass rush, it just hasn't been consistent. You just keep working at it."

This is kind of a "no shit" thread. If we're gonna play more press coverage, and we should, that pass rush has to get better. There seems to be enough consistent pressure but they're not closing the deal. That has to change.

I don't think blitzing is the answer either. With the possible exception of the few times we blitz the NB our LB blitz's are ineffective. They get picked up and it always leave us a man or two down in coverage. To me Urlacher is more valuable there than he is a blitzer. Maybe we send Briggs a little more often but by in large it has to get done with the front four. The way we began the season I thought we'd solved that problem and that we'd have at least two guys with double digit sacks but not at this rate.

I still think Okoye and Paea are our two best inside pass rushers and that AA should be on the bench more. He's another guy whose play has fallen off this year. Moving Peppers inside seemed to work nicely against the Lions but we barely used it last game. Now that Wootton is healthy again I'd like to see them move Pep inside with Okoye on some of those third and long plays espcially in the latter part of the game. Most OG's won't be able to handle him one on one especially lined up next to Izzy.

I don't know what the solution is but when you can't even get a single sack against that patchwork line the Chargers cobbled together something is wrong and whatever it is needs fixing.

Yeah I don't know what the deal is Soul. Do you lay the blame with Rod or with line coach Mike Phair? I haven't seen Melton develop more than he should. Paea might not have seen the field if not for injuries and DE's Reed and Addison were waived. With as many linemen as we kept this season there should be more sacks- A LOT more.

Melton has been a disappointment so far but I keep reminding myself that maybe we expected too much from him given all the hype he got during the preseason. He started out in college as a 235 lb RB, became a 260 lb DE and was drafted as that and now he's a 295 lb DT whose just learning how to use all that added size in an efficient way. You see him make a really great play and then disappear for long stretches. I think he still has a lot to learn about playing that UT spot.

Okoye is by far the more advanced UT of the two since he's had 4 years of NFL experience playing DT and I'm not sure why they aren't playing him more and Melton less. Same thing with Paea. He's so much quicker than AA yet he gets fewer snaps. Maybe it comes down to Melton and AA knowing their assignments better since they've been here longer but to me a pass rush is a pass rush and it's time these guys started laying their ears back and getting to it. Our iggest weakness defensively has been that inside rush and I really thought we'd have improved that dramatically this year but so far we haven't.

I thought Reed would be able to do more than he did too. Wootton is back now and the pressure is on from both Lovie and Marinelli so I'm guessing we'll see some changes in the way they're getting it done. Whatever the solution is they need to find it now. Eighteen sacks in 10 games isn't getting the job done.
