Soul, you really are incapable of giving Angelo due credit, no? A lot of the time when we pick up a player, it's a "Martz guy", and Spencer was "Angelo's buddy's guy". Honestly, he's gotten us a serviceable, if not good o-line and tice has coached them. It's not just you, but it seems like everyone looks away from the good he's done for this team and looks for every flaw he has. It's like the opposite of closing time at the bar....

So, Lovie and Tice grade him out high, but you....you don't? Hmm I think I'll go with what the coaches are saying.

The coaches graded out Adam Archuletta high also
Btw the coaches graded Webb out so highly they tried to sign bushrod to a 3 year deal which he refused and stayed in no
Guess the coaches agreed with me lol

How long was Archuletta on the team? Exactly.Bushrod, for better or for worse, was to bring in competition. Turns out we don't need it, not nearly as much as depth. Nick's dead on on this one. All hail the supreme leader.

I think some of you have a very short memory on JA and his ability to find good talent. Sure he has made some good picks but even a broken clock is right twice a day. Motownbear hit it right on the head with adding more blockers, Jay scrambling more to avoid sacks yet J. Webb must be doing real well because the sacks are down. I give him some credit on his play but if I recall the Saints and Lions game he had very very bad games. As for Jerry buiding this team, the best player on this team was not drafted by him yet he had had 10 long year to build this team. We own the special teams with his draft picks yet our Offense is not that good and had never been that good during the 10 years he has been drafting for this team.

I give GM's credit for early round picks where they have to manuveur around trades and become mind readers at knowing what other teams are doing in order to get "their guy". The first two rounds take some skill as far as getting the right players and getting good value. This is where JA has been very hit and miss ansd his track record speaks for itself.
Guy's like Forte, Carmi, Hester, Paea are scores but their are quite a few fails in there as well. I think this year may have been the single best draftof his career rounds 1-3. Carimi and Paea both have looked good for rookies and the way he's playing right now Conte looks to be a steal in the third round. Best looking true FS we've had in a while.
But the later round 5-7 are mosly where your scouts and your coaches come in. Tice with guys like Louis and Webb. Martz with Enderle and Drake with Knox. Pro scouts and personnel directors are the guys who find you gems like Tim Jennings who comes in an unknown FA and earns a starting role while the GM gets the credit for pulling of the Julius Peppers deals.
Anyone who thinks Jerry Angelo built the bulk of this team from he own expertise as full of shit. We're probably lucky to have had knowledgeable guys like Bobby DePaul and Greg Gabriel advising him over the years. These guys deserve more credit for helping to build this team than they'll ever get. We struggle finding one mid round Olineman who can make this team for years and get by with vets on their last legs yet along comes Mike Tice and he makes two decent starting OT's out of a pair of 7th round picks????
Oh yeah.....it's all Angelo all right.

Henry I do give him credit for some of his early round score and criticism for his failures and I think I'm being fair. Other with more raw football knowledge than I rank him pretty near the bottom as far as GM's go so it's not just me who finds something lacking in his ability to put it all together. Maybe it's just that his flaws are easier to spot.

This is where it gets down to where the "rubber meets the road". If the staff had such great satisfaction with Webb's progress and potential we wouln't have attempted to lure a 26 year old LT away from another team. All JA would have done was to find a two year 32 year old stop gap. But that's not what he did is it?
I'm not saying that Webb has been a complete failure but mo makes a very good point. Why go shopping for a young replacement if the guy is getting the job done 100% of the time. You don't waste $$$ like that when you're the Bears GM.
Personally I like Webb well enough but not so well that I wouldn't be bringing in somebody else who can take his place. Webb is probably more then ideal Swing Tackle than he is a left side starter.

This staff graded out archuletta? Correct me if I'm wrong, but archuletta was a stud FS in ST. Louis and for whatever reason, dropped off the map in Wash., and continued to spiral here. Just like the interceptor, remember him? Nathan Vasher? Did your crystal ball tell you he was gonna completely fall off like he did? Chestor Taylor? I remember alot of us here were excited when we signed him, but he quit.
I guess my point to this is, sacks are part of the game. And, except for the last 2 games our O-line has been solid. Not the NE line, but pretty solid. Sure we can use more quality, but calling Webb a bum is IMO, way off

It's always going to be point counterpoint with JA. If your going to debate it perhaps some agreed upon criteria on what a "hit" is vs a "miss" and what evidence would you accept to believe JA is good, bad or just plain average. IMO JA is very slightly above avg in hits vs misses and I'll leave it at that.
As for Webb, I feel he would have been much better suited for RT. Yes I know we might not have seen what Louis was capable of or Spencer but Tice knew about that all along. Would Carimi if healthy have as many mental mistakes, need as much chip block help? I don't believe so. Plus I feel that we'd be better able to run on both ends.
