Webb Proving to be Draft Day Steal..............

Bears’ J’Marcus Webb proving to be draft-day steal

“That’s a good thing when you’re talking about an offensive tackle and you’re not really pointing him out,” said Bears coach Lovie Smith. “That’s saying that he’s getting his block most of the time. He doesn’t do a lot of talking. He comes to work, always.

“(Offensive line coach) Mike (Tice) has done a great job with him. He graded out high this past week, and that’s the type of play we’ve been getting, not only from J’Marcus but (third-year right tackle) Lance Louis also. Both of our tackles have played well.”

    I
f Webb continues to improve, he could wind up being one of Bears GM Jerry Angelo’s all-time-best draft steals. The 6-foot-7, 333-pounder wasn’t drafted until the seventh round in 2010, 218th overall.“Our scout, Chris Ballard, gave me the background on the kid,” Tice said. “If he’s good enough to (play) as a freshman at Texas, he must have some kind of natural ability.”

Webb left Texas after one year, spent one year at Navarro (Texas) College and then started 24 games in two years at West Texas A&M.

“He’s accepted hard coaching, and he’s very mature, football wise; I don’t know about socially,” Tice said, joking. “He’s smart, and he’s really working hard at his trade, so he’s going to get better, and he is getting better. At his size, the way he moves and can recover, if you can develop him, you’ve got yourself a good one.”

I know this thread is gonna get some flack from a few of you but it does seem to me that Webb has steadily improved his play. I know he had another false start penalty but I watch him alot and it seems to me he's doing a much better job of shadowing his guy now and steering him around the pocket. At least Cutler hasn't been getting shelled from his side. That said I'd still like to see us get a vet LT next year to compete but maybe the guy we shoot for doesn't need to be a top dollar guy. Another young guy with some promise may be fine.

I know I'll take heat for this too but in the event that Webb does turn out to be the steal of that draft in my mind he'll still be Mike Tice's steal. It was Tice who advised that we draft him and I'm sure JA just sighed and said ok, what the hell it's only a 7th round pick. And if Webb does end up being a long term solution it will be because of what Tice made him. Angelo's contribution to him ended with him agreeing to draft him.

If we're gonna give Tice all this credit for turning these players prime time, then Angelo deserves the credit for putting the teams together. He isn't great at finding first round talent, but he and his scouting staff are finding the gems that are overlooked. I really believe by next year, with another offensive lineman or two (despite them playing well, adding good quality depth is number one) and if we can find a game changing WR besides Bennett, we'll be competing all season (kinda like we are now)

What was Angelo's part in drafting Webb? Tice got a great report from a scout on him. figured out for himself that if the kid could play for Texas as a freshman he must have some ability and convinced JA to spend a lousy 7th round pick on the kid. All Angelo did was sign off on it like a Dad whose kid brings him a cheap toy he wants to buy while they're checking out. Not much work went into that decision I'll bet.

I do give Angelo credit for some of the things he's done. The Cutler trade was a stroke of genius. He moved fast and with the right pieces to beat out Dan Snyder and the Redskins and that's no easy task. I'll give him credit for signing Peppers too and once again there he moved fast and hard and got the prize of free agency. His problem is that he doesn't do it fully enough and often enough. Just when you think we're gonna get over the top he pulls back and fails like he did again this past summer.

We could do worse but then again we could do a whole lot better too.

What's the point bothering with the topic? Should I point the obvious he is so bad we can't run our offense as intended? Or we need extra blockers and still there is pressure on cutler? Or cutler scrambling talent allowed him to escape sacks? You want me to give him credit for cutting down on false starts lmfao his job is to not false start. He is a bum

Webb is the best LT in the NFC North.

He has started to shut down some of the better pass rushers in the NFL like Cole and Vanden Bosch.

7th rounders aren't steals. They are like throwing a dart blindfolded and hitting a bullseye; luck. A great pick up, but nothing I would say oh man does JA know what he's looking for or what. 1-4th roundres are steals, from there on out it's all blink luck.

If that was the case, no GM should ever get credit for any picks. Or any flack either. After all, they just listened to a scouting report.
