Good read Nick. Hanie should never have thrown that pass. He didn't read that coverage right at all and just laid it up there but Martz was a fool to call for a backside screen like that with Hanie playing QB. That's a very high risk play anytime and especially so today when the were looking for screens all day long but leaving the middle open.
I keep criticizing Martz for his first and goal offense and I'm gonna keep doing it until that changes. Hanie threw the pick but Martz set us up for failure on that series because he won't send the TE's into the endzone or on fades when we get inside the ten. When he does it we score but then he refuses to go back to it. It seems like when something works he figures it won't work again.
He needs to thin out that playbook of his and start calling smarter when we're in the red zone. You're absolutely right when you say he outsmarts himself and that was a perfect example. That was at least a 6 point swing and maybe a 10 point swing and that was enough to win a close game. Martz needs to keep Hanie out of that kind of a situation but somehow he just can't seem to resist being cute. Even with a FG we go in at halftime ahead and win a moral victory in the first half coming back after two picks. That play call disgusted me and it pissed me off even more that Hanie threw it. That comes from trying too hard to please Martz so all Martz psychological horseshit with him backfires at just the wrong time.

Ill agree that the gameplan for Hanie was very inconsistent. Martz would stop using stuff that works and kept trying stuff everyone knows wasnt gonna work....like throwing it on 2nd and 1? dumb.
Special teams were consistent, they just faced another great ST squad, so it was difficult for them to do much. Understandable, really.
And Martz made dumb calls from time to time, that cost us dearly. But other then that, id say the coaching staff did well. heck, Lovie even won a challenge, and we forced the Raiders to burn a TO so we could get time to review the play to challenge it!! heh.
Inconsistent isn't the right word. What they did again today was give up big plays that resulted in about 13 points for the Raiders. Anytine Jankowski can get with 55 yards he just about automatic and we let him get there a couple of times too many. When I knew it was over was when we didn't stop them on 3rd and five on that last drive. We stop them there and get the ball back with a little over 4 minutes remaing and we had a good chance of pulling it out. They completed that one and then we blew coverage on the long pass right before their TD. We just didn't come up with the stops or the turnover today when we needed them.

we limited them to field goals except for one. I think you guys dont understand what "big plays" means. Palmer had yards, yes...but they had no Passing TDs or running game. So, im not seeing where those "big plays" are that you guys seem to think our D gave up.

The word I'm using to describe it is 'Untimely'.The defense maintained their bend-don't-break mentality and did limit all big plays in the game, and allowing only 1 TD. However, they were untimely in when we needed them to make a stop they couldn't muster it and allowed Palmer and Co to control the clock and pace of the whole game.

this should have been an easy W. Martz is to blame, Hanie is to blame.
Okoye had a great game
-
Okay, a few players I think should be singled out:
Okoye and Melton for helping Peppers get to the ball (otherwise a lethargic pass rush. Get wooton out to see if he's worth keeping)
Tillman and Conte - not great in pass coverage, and Conte was almost always 2-3 steps away. May need to put in Merriweather and Wright
Barber - did a much better job against the raiders, and Martz should've stuck with the hot handed RB here.
Hanie - too often relied on Forte as his go to guy early on; needs to call a time out and tell Martz to ***** himself if he ever does that again. He did, however progress as the game went on
Bennet and RWill - WTF were they?
Knox - great game, but not reliable. Hanie did a good job of getting him the ball, but can we please have other receivers involved?

Lovie could have won two challenges in that game. The challenge of Hanie being OB when he thru the ball, prior the the interception in the 1st quarter when they were driving down the field.
I agree as well, coaching on the team was very "wishy washy" at best. Martz and L. Smith need to work together and if simple plays work...keep doing it!
.....just look how Tebow is doing, and Denver has a defense similar to ours.

Yeah, it seems that Martz is pulling a page out of Ron Turner's book, and ignoring stuff that WORKS, and trying gimmicks for shits and giggles.
I dunno, im from the school of thought that if something works on offense, you continue to do it until the other team has shown you they can stop it. I remember a game in 2006 when we were playing the Giants (Hester's returned missed FG game), and right before the half, we ran Thomas Jones, something like a dozen times in a row...they couldnt stop him, so we just marched right down field...not a single pass was thrown.
In this case...regular, quick plays seemed to be Hanie's strong suit. Martz should develop his game plan for Hanie around that. Stop using dumb gimmicks with a backup QB, dont make any "Cutler" style plays where Hanie is gonna have to actually WAIT for WRs to get open...Hanie doesnt have the gun of Cutler, and even if he DID, the oncoming pressure is getting to him.

Just looked up the FFL points scored in my league ...
PALMER ... 14
HANIE ... 24
Pretty damn impressive the first time out despite the gaffes.
Whens the last time a BEARS QB had 50 yds rushing ???
Holy Vick ! ... or Tebow.

Big plays are ones that gain more than 20 yards at a crack and ones that give up more than 40 are huge. Yesterday we gave up two or more than forty that I can recall. One was a screen to their FB for cryin' out loud and that resulted in 3 points and the other was the pass on the Raiders last scoring drive and we gave up 7 there. Take that 10 points back and it's a whole new ball game. There were a few that got them 20 plus and those got them in FG range twice. Janikowski doesn't miss and two FG = 1 TD. We gave them that.
Overall the defense did play a good game but they fell prey to those "big plays" again. You can't say that two 40 yard plus plays that cost us 10 points had not effect. Those are the plays that kept us playing catch up all game long.
