Just saves a couple seconds, that's all. As soon as the next play ends and the ball is blown dead, the clock is stopped for 2 min. warning. If you let the clock stop for the 2 min warning, then call a timeout immediately following the next play, it can cost you a couple seconds to get the timeout called and the ref to whistle the timeout and get the clock stopped.
I thought I edited my earlier post to include an "atta boy" for Lance Louis. Must not have saved it. But anyway, him sprinting the length of the field and dragging the ball carrier down saved the touchdown, and gave us a chance in the game. Super good hustle. And Forte sucks at tackling. Hope we don't have to see too many more attempts from him.

Martz's playcalling/game mis-management was the primary reason the Bears lost a game they should have won.
Considering the situation (inexperienced QB starting his first game, bad Oakland rush D, etc.), Martz's gameplan was still too pass-happy. The key example of this was just before halftime when we drove down to the 7 with 2nd & 1, 40 sec on the clock and a TO remaining. The Bears were set up to go into halftime ahead (10-9 even with just a FG) and with all the mo on their side despite having been outplayed most of the game.
RUN THE F***ING BALL!!!
Worst case scenario was getting stuffed twice and kicking a chipshot FG to end the half up 10-9. It is very likely that the 1st would have been picked up, we would have had 2-3 shots at the end zone, and the game becomes 14-9 (with Oakland demoralized at half).
What does "genius" Martz do?
He calls a reverse, cross-field TE screen on 2nd and 1--a tough throw for an experienced QB to make, Cutler missed the same exact pass long in week 1--of course, Hanie fears leaving it short so he overcooks it; of course, the Raiders are defending screens all day....and there goes sure points missed and sure points the other way given up.
There goes the momentum and Hanie's confidence.
Absolutely STUPID call by Martz to not stay conservative there. They game was lost right there.
I hate MM like a lot of you hate JA...please send this jackass packing.
I won't disagree w/you Martz was bad. But at the end of the day, Haine could have chosen to not throw that screen and just junk it and we go up going into the 1/2. It's a dumb play, and better plays could have been called, but Haine's execution of it made it worse. we had I think 5 penalties in the first 2 or 3 drives, that put us in worse position and Haine MIGHT be down to 1 int on the game. Those aren't on Martz either. Better execution would have won this game; and that is on the players not on the pla callers was all my point was. I'll be more then happy to slap martz w/a good portion of the blame; but the majority goto the players.

The Bears lost on the road to a good team in a tough environment by 5 points with a QB that was starting in his first career game. Things will be okay.

Windy, that is what really needs to be taken from this game. I heard people on the radio, local and national saying this would be a toss up game w/Cutler. But we cannot have the coaches call so poor plays, and our team as a whole needs to execute better.

I learned that hanie doesn't know when to spike the ball :)
Not that hard fella... You don't back step as much as he did that last play of the game

Isn't that something you learn in high school or college? Way to try to escape blame Hanie.

This is a Martz offence we’re talking...maybe Hanie didn’t think he was allowed do anything without taking 6 steps first....:)
Reductio ad absurdum...it's how we roll...

Thing is; it wasn't supposed to be a spike, from the looks of it. It was to be a fake spike; I think Haine means he didn't know you couldn't spike it after the jig was up....god I hope that's what he meant.

This is so true.
Further, the Bears had a number of plays that, had these plays gone the Bears way, the Bears could well have won this game. Painful, yes, but it also means that there are several different ways for the Bears to improve going forward. Things like, intercepting the other teams poorly thrown passes, better decisions and better execution on the part of the QB, better performance by the WRs, better decisions by the coaches..... The Bears only need to improve in a couple of these areas in order to win most of the remaining games of the season.
Personally, I'd have like to see more play action and deep throws early to keep the opposing defense honest.
While I am disappointed that the bears lost, this is not the "end of the season" kind of day like the eagles had.
"Professional Armchair Quarterback" and other oxymora.....
