The Mike Martz thread
Ok, so Martz's contract is up after this year. Do they re-sign him? Should they?
I think so. The offense has shown improvement under him. I don't know who or what changed him at week 5, but he obviously sees what he has to work with and gets alot out of it. Cutler has had his (this season) best year under him, and I would like to see what kinda numbers he can put up under Martz in year 3. Plus, getting rid of him means another OC for Jay, and the whole continuity thing worries me.
thoughts?

I'm a bit torn. I smh thinking of yet another offensive coordinator, let alone how the players would feel.
But at the same time, Martz is too GD impatient and arrogant. He proved that this weekend! He didn't completely compensate for Hanie's lack of experience. He may say he did and a lot of the playbook was on the bench, but his playcalling was inept and that's because of his ego.
Given another year, he's likely to install an even more complex and intricate version of his brainchild, even before the offense has fully grasped the current version.
And let's not forget that JA and the front office are even further behind in acquiring the right personnel that fit this medicore show on turf.
We even need better turf!

They sure made moves this year that would indicate that he would be back. Olsen is a good example of that.
I think it's to our benefit to have him back so Jay and crew don't have to learn a new offense. Martz pretty much has this team by the shorties.

I understand the continuity argument but I would have to say a resounding NO!
1) That pompous ass has cost us unnecessary losses in the 1st half of each of the last two seasons with his stubborn refusal to play to the teams' strengths (just to prove a point about how "great" his pass heavy system is).
2) In each of those 2 first half-seasons he has nearly got our franchise QB killedby refusing to face realities about our mediocre OL and WRs. We are VERY FORTUNATE that Jay is as durable as he is. Many QBs would have been out for the year both seasons with the punishment he took.
3) In the vanity to have "his guys" he has coerced the barely-able-to-remember-to-breathe GM into making some very questionable personnel moves, both in terms of who he's acquired and who he has let go/not acquired (RW, Manu, Olsen).
4) Just when you think he is finally "getting it" and "on board" with what the offense does do/does not do well, he seemingly forgets all about the fact that he's got a young, new, shaky backup QB out there and throws away what would have been a great and confidence-building win in Oakland with one of the dumbest and most completely unnecessary playcalling risks on 2nd & 1 from the 7.

If it takes you the first half of the season twice to finally realize you don't have the personnel on this team to dip into your Rams SB winning formula then you need to go... or create plays that suits the personnel you have.

+1 This pretty much sum it up for me too. We may not have to decide. Martz already turned down their first offer for an extension because he felt he should get a raise. That alone pretty much shows his arrogance and lack of good judgement. So what happens after this year when his results haven't proven all that much better?
I don't trust Mike Martz to ever completely adapt to playing to the strenghts of his personnel and I see him continuing his attempts at fitting square pegs into round holes. In addition to that his offense lacks good goaline plays and he lack good common sense when he's faced with first and goal. He refuses to consistently use his TE's as he should when were in that spot even though we seem to score every damn time we do use one. He either gets too cute (that backside screen was a perfect example) or his playcalling sequence just plain old fashioned sucks 2 out of every 3 trips into that territory.
We fail to score TD's and end up settling for FG's way too often in the red zone and I think it's because his offense lacks what it needs for those situations. He's too used to big play scoring and a more wide open attack than he will ever be able to use in Chicago. This isn't a dome team playing on a rug like he had in St. Louis and Detroit and he won't do enough to adapt. Mats is right. It's far more likely he keeps pushing his own offensive agenda than adapting and you can hear than from him just about everytime he speaks.
Even though it constitutes another change I doubt we'd have trouble finding a guy who couldn't run an abbreviaed version of what Martz has installed keeping what will work and replacing what won't. I still think that if Jeremy Bates is available and interested he'd be a guy we should look at. We looked in his direction before Martz buy Bates decided to go with Pete Carroll in Seattle and got bounced over philisophical differences after just one year. Imagine that, LOL. Pete Carroll just continues to prove why he'll never be a successful NFL coach with his my way of the highway methods.
I would surely pause and take stock of what other options we might have before I'd lock Martz into another two year deal which is all they'll do anyway. There are guys who could take this offense to better places than we can go with Martz. JMO.
I'm getting to that age where a lifetime warranty just doesn't mean as much to me anymore as an afternoon nap.

Unless we get some more talent on offense it won't matter who we bring in to be the OC. We need better wrs and a better OL. When Jay has a little time he can torch defenses but when he has to constantly run for his life the entire OL suffers. If we had a wr like Larry Fritzgerald or Calvin Johnson, Jay Cutlers INTS would drop big time because those guys will fight for the ball when double and tripple teamed.

I am the one guy on this site that actually sticks up for Mike Martz and I never mentioned anything about Angelo.
