Martz won't discuss reports he's interested in two college jobs

    By NFL.com Wire Reports

Chicago Bears offensive coordinator Mike Martz declined comment Wednesday on reports that he's interested in the vacant head coaching jobs at Arizona State and UCLA.

"You know, anything about those kinds of things, I would never discuss. I have a job, and this job is the only one I can discuss. It would be very inappropriate for me to talk about anything like that," said Martz, according to the Chicago Tribune.

Martz is in the final year of his contract with the Bears. He turned down a one-year extension during the offseason that would have paid him his current salary of $1 million.

He was an assistant coach at Arizona State in the 1980s and early '90s. NFL Network insider Jason La Canfora, citing a league source, reported this week that Martz would be interested in several prominent West Coast college head-coaching positions, UCLA and Arizona State among them.

Bears coach Lovie Smith was asked about the rumors as well. "No. I don't know anything about that," Smith said. "I can tell you about the Chicago Bears. Mike Martz was here working his butt off today. I know that."

Of course he's not gonna discuss it. Why did they even think he would? You're the OC of a team in the thick of a playoff hunt and you've turned down a $1 mil offer to continue coaching in Chicago so I think the question if legit but he's not gonna confirm his interest even though we all know it's there.

He didn't ingratiate himself with the Bears by turning that offer down and he sent a message to them with it saying he thinks he's worth more than that because he's Mike Martz yet his performance as a coach didn't warrant a raise. He'll be the HC at a college next season for far more than $1 mil per year and you can believe it. Mike Martz has one foot out the door already.

We can do better than either Turner or Martz. Martz may have improved things but he an arrogant asshole who'll just keep insisting he's right even when everyone else on the planet including his own QB know he's wrong. He calls out his players for mis-execution of a bad call? Lovie Smith never gets the direspect Jay Cutler has shown Martz and that just what we see on the surface.

Some people are saying that Jay doesn't want to have to learn a new system again and I think that's bullshit. I think it'll be "party at Cutlers" the day he knows Martz is gone for good. Bring in Jeremy Bates.
can we get better? Well we did when we replaced Turner with Martz. But everyone mad at Martz despite getting us to be the 16th ranked offense. That is a fact and another fact is this is only the second time our offense has been ranked this high in JA tenure! So everyone has the "faith" we will just move on from Martz and get closer to an nfl calibur offense I just got one thing to say=allot easier said then done. If it was that easily done we would have at the LEAST one top ten offense in JA tenure. I think we are close with what we have. We are a LT and a number one go to WR away from a top ten offense with Martz being the guy in charge. With someone else who knows I will defer to JA tenure and the fact this is only the second best offense under his regime

to be fair motown, we've only had 1 O ranked as poorly as last year since 2004. So it's hard to say we cannot get better or worse then either of these two. That being said, both have had to struggle w/a lack of O talent so who knows where either of them had been if given more to work with.

Yardage isn't scores mo and he's the king of fuckups inside the ten. I'll bet we kick more short FG's after stalled drives within the 10 yard line than any other offense in the league. He may get us down the field but not always into the endzone and and it's a combination of bad sequential playcalling and his refusal to use the TE's more often in those series. We throw to them we score. We did Sunday now let's see if he does it again this week.

There's really no reason to even debate it. I'll bet anyone who wants to take the bet that Mike Martz won't be the Bears OC next year. If the Bears even offer him another extension I'll be very surprises after he turned them down on it last time. He can double his salary with a long term deal by taking one or the other of the college jobs and add to that with all kinds of other goodies and he answers to no one but an AD.

Mike Martz will always want to do it "his way" and with the Bears he can't do that. Jerry Angelo is not gonna be able to get him the "tools" he needs before it's decision time and all he'll do is play the Bears against the college offers. The Bears are his leverage to use whe the colleges come knocking. Not vice versa. Come seasons end he's gone, one way or the other, bank on it.
