Go West? UCLA, Arizona State jobs would intrigue Bears' Martz
Mike Martz, who turned down a short-term contract extension from the Chicago Bears during the preseason, would be interested in several prominent West Coast college head-coaching positions, UCLA and Arizona State among them, according to a league source. Those Pacific-12 Conference jobs recently came open after UCLA fired Rick Neuheisel and Arizona State let go of Dennis Erickson. Martz, who's in the final year of his contract as the Bears' offensive coordinator, is most familiar with Arizona State, where he spent nine seasons as the Sun Devils' quarterbacks and receivers coach (1983, 1986-87) and offensive coordinator (1984, 1988-91) before jumping to the NFL with the then-Los Angeles Rams. He eventually became the Rams' head coach, after they moved to St. Louis. Martz started his football career on the West Coast, playing at UC Santa Barbara and Fresno State and coaching at numerous colleges before leaving for the University of Minnesota for one season, then going to Arizona State.

Heard this the other day. It would suck if he left for Cutler and the other players on O. And I think a guy Martz's age would really want all the bs that goes w/college recruiting/politics. I heard some say it might just be a power play to force the Bears hands. If he wants college; feel free to fall into obscurity in some non contending college program. As much as it would hurt Cutler( another new system to learn) it wouldn't bother me to see him go.

lol...whut?
I agree with your post, it very well may be a power-play to force the Bears' hands, i disagree with this sentence. Coaching for college, especially D1, is far from "obscurity," ASU may not be a perennial college football powerhouse, but they arent on the opposite end of that scale either. College coaches can make millions, and become campus and state legends if they do well.

You know the Martz ego does not like being an OC and that he wants to be a head coach somewhere.
I would be shocked if he was back with the Bears next season.

Jimmors, I'm not that into college football; so I won't get into a long discussion about it..in all honesty the game sucks. But I kinda pay attention to what the talking heads talk about. For that reason I feel like a good barometer of where ASU falls...and it's about 2000 feet off the cliff of revelvancy. I'm not saying it wouldn't be good money; and a huge ego boost if he can win there. But he won't be talked about on Monday mornings when the talking heads are discusisng football, pro and college.

I'd hold the door open for MM to walk through. I'll even buy his plane ticket to Tempe. This guy needs to go and I hope the team isn't moved by his "power play" trial balloon if that's what this is. Goodbye and best wishes, MM.
And it isn't like the O would necessarily have to learn a "whole new system". Promote Tice internally to OC (the dude has earned every penny of a promotion) and just trim the excesses of Martz's playbook (esp. the too-cute-by-half bs). It isn't like the system is bad, it's more that MM insists on running inappropriate plays/gameplans within it that don't fit the situation or the personnel on the field. I gotta believe that Tice would do a better job of fitting the playcalling to the circumstances, rather than the other way around as MM does all too often.

I don't know man. When he's on...he is ON! I've been re-watching the SD game cause it's been IMO our best offensive game. Our offense did anything they wanted to through the air that day. 4th qtr on a 3rd and long he called a inside screen to Spaeth for a first down that was brilliant.

I thought long and hard about this too and I'm ready for him to be gone. We'll miss some of his creativity but we won't miss the semi insanity of some of his game plans and play calling. We'll go through a streak where we're just hitting every series and then all of a sudden he just quits calling what's working and throws in some non-sequitur play call like that backside screen or the reverse to Bennett when we were driving against the Pack and the end of the NFCC Game.
It's almost as if there's a wicked humor in it for him when he sets thing up to fail. It's almost as if all he thinks about is what a genius he'll look like if it succeeds and never once gives a single thought to what a dolt he'll look like if it doesn't. Well, the coached in Detroit so he must have the hide of a rhinosceros and the conscience of Charley Manson.

Don't even joke about such things, LOL.
We can do better than either Turner or Martz. Martz may have improved things but he an arrogant asshole who'll just keep insisting he's right even when everyone else on the planet including his own QB know he's wrong. He calls out his players for mis-execution of a bad call? Lovie Smith never gets the direspect Jay Cutler has shown Martz and that just what we see on the surface.
Some people are saying that Jay doesn't want to have to learn a new system again and I think that's bullshit. I think it'll be "party at Cutlers" the day he knows Martz is gone for good. Bring in Jeremy Bates.
