Martz Says Hanie Will Do Just Fine...........

Mike Martz: Caleb Hanie can handle offense

Mike Martz says he has a much better feel for Caleb Hanie after his first start against the Raiders. | Tom Cruze~Sun-Times

    Updated: December 1, 2011 2:20AM

While some critics thought Bears offensive coordinator Mike Martz gave Caleb Hanie too much to handle in Hanie’s first NFL start last week, Martz said Wednesday he probably gave him too little. The Bears had a season-high 401 yards against the Raiders, but Hanie’s three first-half interceptions were too much to overcome in a 25-20 loss. (So apparently Martz believes just the opposite of what the rest of the immediate world believes about his game plan and playcalling)

‘‘I was a little conservative early with him when I probably didn’t need to be,’’ Martz said. ‘‘You’ve got to give him the full scope of things. He can see things and react to them and make those throws. There are things he does better than others, and we’ll try to focus on [that]. I have a much better feel for him now than I did going into that game.’’ (Yeah real conservative Mike. A conservative offense usually doesn't get picked off 3 times in one half. Does Martz live in the same world of reality the rest of us do? What color is the sky on your planet Mike?)

Martz defended his call of an ill-fated throwback screen on a second-and-one play from the Raiders’ 7-yard line late in the first half. Linebacker Aaron Curry read the play all the way and tipped the pass intended for Kellen Davis. Kamerion Wimbley intercepted it and returned it 73 yards. ‘‘No — shoot, I’ve thrown that for 20 years, and it’s never been anything but a good play,’’ Martz said. ‘‘We didn’t execute it well. And the ball got tipped. Screens aren’t hard. It’s just that something happened. I didn’t think twice about the call.’’ (The car ran out of gas, I had a flat tire, I got stuck behind a garbage truck, I had an accident, I got pulled over for speeding, and whatever other excuse you want to use Mike! I don't think any of us care about what that play has done for you duing the last 20 years, last Sunday it cost us the game!!! You need to join the Ndamokong Suh "Let's Escape Reality for a Moment Club")

    Martz lauded Hanie’s overall performance
    .

‘‘The good news is he got better as the game went on,’’ he said. ‘‘He’s a smart guy. He sees things well. He can do what we do. He just needs to play. I expect him to [pick up] where he left off in that game.’’ (And now that you're back to reality, so do we, just give him a better chance for it then you did against the Raiders)
Martz would neither confirm nor deny reports that he’s interested in the vacant head-coaching position at Arizona State, where he was an assistant for nine years from 1983 to ’91. ‘‘I would never discuss . . . those kinds of things,’’ he said. ‘‘I have a job. This job is the only one I’ll discuss. I appreciate what you’re saying, but it would be inappropriate to talk about anything like that.’’

But Martz also would not address his future with the Bears. Martz is in the last year of his two-year deal. He turned down an extension in the offseason.
After spending two years learning Martz’s system, Jay Cutler and the offense would be back at square one if Martz doesn’t return.

‘‘I learned a long time ago, I just don’t worry about that anymore. I did at one time,’’ Martz said. ‘‘Today is more than enough. We’ll worry about tomorrow when it gets here in this business. When you start worrying about those other things, you take your eye off the target, and you don’t do a good job at the job you have presently.’’ (And right back to the bullshit again. You know you're thinking about it Mike and you also know your mind is already made up. If a HC offer comes you'll accept is faster than an ugly woman with three kids to feed accepts a marriage proposal. Don't even got there)

I may be in a minority but I can't wait for the season to be over and to hear the announcement that Martz is leaving to accept the job at ASU or wherever. He's lame duck coach here and everyone including him knows it. He insulted the fromt office by turning down there extension offer and his offense hasn't shown all that much improvement. On top of that we're looking at another one of his failures that he suggested we sign in the offeseason and if the real truth came out I don't think his QB likes or respects him.

It's time for the Bears to make a change.

For years people have been blaming the OCs for our players sucking. It's about time the blame was put on the players. The only INT I put on Martz is the one near the goal line. The other two were due to crap passes by Hanie.

Is Martz a good OC? No, but no need to pin all the blame on Martz (as it seems to be)

I don't disagree with you but that's not the point. When Martz is saying he was too conservative with Hanie is take that to mean he feels he did't allow him to pass often enough. Well 58% of our plays were passes vs 42% runs against a team with one of the best pass rushes in football but a poor run defense who gave up the second most runs over 20 yards in the NFL.

I guess I fail to see the logic in his playcalling Benji. That defense screamed run on me and we passes. All Martz has to say about that atrocious screen pass call is that's it's worked to him for 20 years and in the same situation he'd call it again. Given the fact that the Raiders were playing the screen pass all game long and jumping those routes I wouldn't call that a very conservative call, would you?

Now if he means he should let Hanie air it out downfield more then I'd agree with that. If they keep putting 8 and 9 men in the box to stop Forte and Barber then you get their attention by going over the top on then an force those Safteties back but does anyone really know what Martz means by what he says. What he says and what he does are sometimes polar opposites.
