Is Anyone Else But Me More Worried About Martz Than Hanie?????.....

Mike Martz must tailor Bears’ game plan to Caleb Hanie’s strengths
    By Mark Potash mpotash@suntimes.com December 3, 2011 1:12PM
Mike Martz wouldn’t admit the ‘‘throwback screen’’ that resulted in an interception last week was a questionable play-call. (The fact that he won't even ackowledge the "possibility" that it wasn't the right call for that situation just tells me he'd do it again if, in his mind, the situation calls for it. This is why Martz calling plays worries me more than Hanie trying to carry them out)

    Updated: December 4, 2011 10:19AM

The faction of Bears fans worried that offensive coordinator Mike Martz will leave after this season is eclipsed only by the faction of Bears fans worried that he’ll stay.
That must be the curse of genius.

The Bears’ game Sunday against the Chiefs is a big one for Caleb Hanie, but it’s an even bigger one for Martz. And it’s the same challenge he has faced since he realized he knows everything there is to know about offensive football when the Rams won Super Bowl XXXIV: Does he have the humility to learn from his mistakes? (Based on his steadfast refusal to take any responsibility for his crappy play calling last week I'd say no, he doesn't)

If Martz could do that as well as he orchestrated the Greatest Show on Turf — with Hall of Famers at running back, left tackle, quarterback and possibly even wide reveiver — he would be as good as he’s reputed to be.

But it seems Martz has to be prodded to balance his offense to give the Bears the best chance to win, to call plays that allow his beleaguered quarterback to throw the ball before he gets hit or to let his beleaguered quarterback move the pocket and buy time to make a play work.

Here’s how simple the solution is: He just has to live by his own stated philosophy.

Here’s my philosophy as a coach,’’ Martz said when asked if a coach who has lived by the drop-back passer can take advantage of Hanie’s mobility. ‘‘If you’re not pragmatic as a coach, [if] you coach from a box of information, you’ll fail.

‘‘[You have to] adjust to what you have and be pragmatic. [If you] need to run it 60 times, then you do. Whatever it takes to win. .  .  . You have to adjust and do the right thing by the people you have and give them the best opportunity to have success.’’

(So why is it he doesn't do as he says above? Can't people see what a f'n fraud this guys is? How dishonest with himself and others? He's the kind of guy who'd reach out to shake your hand while the other slipped behind your back holding a knife if it benefitted him to do so. He may not stomp on players but he's just as disassociated with reality as Ndamakong Suh is!)
Amen to that. But we’ll see how well he lives up to it when Hanie makes his second NFL start. Hanie is far from the prototypical Martz quarterback. In some ways, he is the polar opposite. But used properly, he should be good enough to get the Bears into the playoffs. Now we’ll see just how much of a genius Martz is. (We already the know the answer to this. I'll just settle for intelligent enough to know you don't pass 61% of the time againt a team rated 26th against the run when your averaging over 5 yards per carry)

He failed on one account last week, calling an ill-advised ‘‘throwback screen’’ on second-and-one from the Raiders’ 7-yard line late in the first half. Hanie rushed it like he was on automatic pilot — like a quarterback making his first NFL start — and the ball was tipped and intercepted, with Kamerion Wimbley returning it 73 yards to set up a Raiders field goal.

Asked whether he understood why some people criticized the call, Martz didn’t budge.‘‘No. Shoot, I’ve thrown that for 20 years, and it’s never been anything but a good play,’’ he said. ‘‘We didn’t execute it very well. And the ball got tipped. When you throw a screen and the ball gets tipped .  .  . Screens aren’t hard. It’s just something that happened, really.’’ (Here's where I prove my point. If it's never been "anything but a good play" why has it failed both times you've run it this year with two separate QB's and two different receivers and in one case it cost us the game. I wouldn't call that 100% successful you f'n boneheaded arrogant prick)

This is where Martz loses many people. It’s not that it’s a bad play; it’s a great play. Kellen Davis was so wide open when the Bears ran it against the Falcons in the season opener that he could have crawled into the end zone with Chris Williams on his back.

But even Jay Cutler botched that one, throwing the ball well over Davis’ head for an incompletion. And if Cutler can screw it up that badly, what chance does Hanie have in his first NFL start?

Great play. Wrong place to call it. Lesson learned. Right? (Don't count on it)

    We’ll see.

Here I am off on another of my gameday Martz rants and the only way I'll stop is if the ignorant asshat stops pulling all that crazy shit every week and just wins the offensive battles the old fashioned way. Move it down the field and score.

I'm very worried about MM, especially now that it seems like a foregone conclusion he's not gonna be re-signed and will take a college HC job as soon as the season is over. MM's loyalty is not to the Bears franchise or team; his loyalty is to MIKE MARTZ and his way of doing things come hell or high water.

Maybe I'm being a little paranoid here, but it wouldn't surprise me if MM not-so-unintentionally sabotages the team in the rest of the season by continuing his ways, just to showcase his "system", and then claiming the inevitable blowups (like last week's dumbass screen) are entirely due to "poor execution" by a backup QB and "personnel shortcomings". The dude seems just arrogant and defensive/vindictive enough to do it.

At the very least, I'm really worried that he will cost us more games and a playoff spot out of pure stubborness and refusal to accept constructive criticism. We should be 8-3 right now and in the drivers' seat for a WC. Instead we are 7-4 and only one more screwup away from being in real trouble.

MP I think it's been that way all along and his behavior last week almost looks like he did try to sabotage Hanie's debut.

You're a medical professional and trained to see things that aren't so obvious and others may miss and I don't think you're being paranoid at all about the sabotage thing. It won't look intentional but I think you see the same character traits in the guy as I do and defensiveness which may lead to a persecution complex which may lead to vindictiveness isn't something I'd put past him.

When you tear the guy down a little psychologically to see what he's really all about anyone can see that it's about Martz and the Martz system. He's just an NFL mercenary with a big thick playbook and a rep that should have worn off long ago. I'll bet $1000 Bears Bucks once this guy leaves the NFL he never sets foot in an NFL stadium as a coach again. I think he's arrogant and uncaring almost to the point of being sadistic. He seems to thrill in trying to prove himself right and other wrong no matter what the cost to his players.

I'll be real happy when he's gone.

Mo, why do you keep insisting that we have to go backwards. It's like you believe the only either/or is a Martz or a Turner. There are a lot of other more qualified guys out there than either of those two. It's not either/or, it's neither/nor. Neither one of them is what we need so we find someone we do. I still think it will be Tice but I can also see them bringing in a very sharp QB coach to work with Tice as his right hand man and take charge of playcalling.

Nobody enjoyed the Ron Turner offense and although this one has a little more sparkle it's coming at a cost that's more than we should be paying. We need more offensive talent but we also need a guy will adapt to what he has and not just say that. He needs to actuall do it. All Martz does is talk about it do nothing to change that isn't forced upon him.

Weather it's Turner or Martz both need talent to make it run. Martz was the last pick at OC and I'd bet not only forced to run the ball w/balance but to use a FB and TE as well. Yeah I don't think we'll ever see Martz in the NFL again-he's basically worked his way down the chain.

    Chicago Bears

Great we've gone from being arm chair QB's to arm chair psychologists. We don't know what goes into the game planning and what's said in coaches meetings. How can you break someone down psychologically based on what plays he's calling? Or what he says in a 90 second interview?

Everyone needs to stop focusing on the back side screen and look what plays he called to get the team down to the red zone in the first place. It was one play out of what? 60 or 70! Wimbleymade a great play on the ball, otherwise it would've gone for 6. One player wasn't accounted for and read it. End of story

    why worry?

worry about the team bringing either one of them back next year.
neither one of these guys is gonna help you win games.
