Ditka on Hanie
"You hate to say ... this is chin strap time. You buckle it up and you go," the former Bears coach and current ESPN analyst said Monday on "Mike & Mike" on ESPN Radio. "I don't know how. You find a way. I think the biggest disappointment is Hanie. I think his choices, his decisions and even on a couple of occasions [Sunday] when he made the right decision he made the wrong throw. He made a poor throw, he had guys open. I think that's a disappointment."
"I think when he's your backup and you've watched him for a period of two years now and he's the best you're going to get as a backup you've got to look at your evaluation. Are you evaluating this kid honestly or do we want him to succeed because we like him? There's a big difference there. Sometimes that happens. 'Well, he's a great kid and we want him to succeed because we like him. Chances are he won't play because Cutler won't get hurt.' Well, he's been exposed now. Can he play or can't he play? I don't know. After what I watched in two weeks I have my doubts."
Okay, last year Martz wanted a veteran quarterback, and we got possibly the worst backup possible. Now this year, Martz doesn't have a veteran, and Hanie's playing godawful. Does this fall on Martz for his bad playcalling, or Angelo for not getting a reasonable backup? I think that's where the two camps are at on this board, and I'm in the "Martz is too smart for his own good" category. Then again, we lost two touchdowns because of bad play by the players, yet one of them was a Martz guy...IDK at this point, but if we don't throw more quick passes, and try to back defenses out of the 8 man fronts, while maintaining a running game, we'll never know the right answer. Hanie is not accurate at all downfield, and if we can get him to use our WRs to beat the defenses with a lot more shorter passes, we might have a chance.

Wait. Our wide receivers? You don't mean the ones on the roster. Seriously?

I'm of the mind that the problems are both execution (Hanie) and playcalling (Martz). Everyone who's ever played sandlot ball knows that you gotta cater to the capabilities of the person playing a position.....you don't send the team turtle out on a bomb, you don't give the stupid kid much decision making, and you don't let the guy who throws like a girl play QB. Martz has not called plays that work towards what Hanie can do well, and then Hanie hasn't done much of anything well (except scramble, which he was told not to do last game, and a couple of good throws to Knox against Oakland).
It's looking more and more like Hanie's "good" play in the NFCC game last year was the anomoly. Time to think about getting a better backup next year.

Teams have had a whole week to game plan for Hanie. And they aren't having much trouble on game day.
He entered the game SO unexpectedly against Green Bay... and even then he threw a pick 6 to a friggin' lineman. Then all he did was basically run for his life for the rest of the game. Somehow people look back and think that is was some display of what he is capable of... and they are right. Throwing picks and running for his life. Sometimes at the same time. I am still baffled by the people who look back and think he played so well... he doesn't look like he's gotten any worse or better. He still just looks bad.
I usually disagree with everything Martz does... but he was the one saying the Bears needed a veteran backup... and what did Jerry Angelo do... promotes the cheapest available option to 2nd string and carries on...

You have to explain the Oakland game to me ...
&
you have to explain the Kansas City game to me.
And you better have an answer for the 7 step drop and the DEFENSE thinking its a gimme.
Theres plenty of blame here ... I'm not unloading on one kid's gourd.
He's been thru enough when his team didnt show up.

Perhaps you didn't notice my quotes around the word good.
Good point on gameplanning though.
