We need both, but how do we get the OT upgrade that we need?
Webb, inconsistent playing the most important position.
Carimi, more of a RT coming off of a knee injury.
Louis, OG playing OT and struggles with speed rushers.
How do we fix that?
Option 1
Sign WR Marques Colston
1. OT Barrett Jones [Alabama]
2. WR Kendall Wright [Baylor]
Option 2
Sign OT Demetrius Bell
1. WR Michael Floyd [Notre Dame]
2. OG Kevin Zeitler [Wisconsin]
Windy,
Thanks for posting this thread--you have hit the nail on the head with your analysis IMO. Exactly how I've been thinking. Frankly, I want to (and think) we will finish 7-9 which will elevate our draft picks into the low double digits with an extra 3rd rounder in the single digits (from Carolina). That's 4 picks in the first 2 1/2 rounds.
1. WE need another starting quality OT to push Webb down the depth chart to backup/swing OT (where he would be fine and a big upgrade over OMG) and it would be very difficult to get one out of FA as you mentioned. That's why we should concentrate on signing a vet WR in FA and use the 1st round pick on an OT like Reilly Reiff or Jones, etc. Someone who can start on week 1 opposite Carimi, no matter who plays LT and who plays RT. Louis should go back inside where he belongs and compete with Spencer for the RG job.
2. Lots of people are on the Blackmon kick but he's gonna go early and it would cost too much to move up like that (we have other needs to attend to as well). Its pretty unlikely to draft a WR that is gonna have a major rookie year impact unless you get a top-5/10 guy. Most successful WRs out of college need 2-3 years to blossom. I would favor signing a WR out of FA and drafting a future develomental prospect as well.
3. Assuming VJ and DB aren't available (rumor is VJ wants out of SD so don't count that out yet), I like your option 1. Sign Colston and draft an OT in the 1st.
4. Then, there are a number of WR prospects who look interesting and should be available in rounds 2-3 (I'm assuming Jeffery, Blackmon, and Floyd all go in round one). Kendall Wright, Toon, Dwight Jones, & McNutt all are worth looking at closely.
5. If by some miracle we snag a good OT in FA, then taking Michael Floyd in the 1st is a possibility and I like the idea of Zeitler or a DE or LB in round 2 as we are aging there.

Lets say we take a WR in round 1, who starts at LT next year?
It would have to be Webb and I am not comfortable with that.
And do not get me wrong I like Webb, but if we want the most out of Cutler we need an OL that is better than average/inconsistent.
Agreed.
We have cap space and need to be aggressive in FA, especially with a WR. We are also gonna need in FA a #2QB and I like your idea earlier, Windy, of also signing a Merriweather replacement vet safety to backup the Conte-Wright duo. Steltz can be the 4th. We can draft a CB but let's not draft another safety.

Then if we want an immediate impact at WR it has to come from free agency. WR's have a minute probability of coming out of th draft and producing much of anything in the first few years.
So i say we go with oline early, and take a WR in the second or later round.
On one hand, I don't want everyone learning a new offense yet again. On the other hand, Martz' playcalling is downright retarded in a lot of big situations.
That rule was broken twice this year alone with Green and Jones both having big rookie seasons. Jeffries and Blackmon both have a great chance at duplicating that success, IMHO, and looking at what Floyd has done with shit for QBs the past two season, it's hard not to like his chances at the same with Jay slinging the rock. We need top talent and a a true big #1 receiver on this team. It's a no-brainer first and foremost for me. I don't care where it comes from, we need it BAAAAAD.
At least we have potential gamers at LT, at WR we have a very good young flanker in Earl and a bunch of slot ceiling guys.

I'd love to see the Bears draft ND's Michael Floyd, but doubt he'll be on the board by the 15th-18th pick or so. We need a big body that can play jump ball in the corners end zone (megatron-like) to help us in the red zone. If nothing else... a quality FA possession receiver pick-up that isn't afraid of going across the middle to help us move the chains when its 3rd and medium/long. I think Da Bears are d@mn near the bottom in converting 3rd downs.
If we finish 7-9 (which seems not unlikely one bit), we chould have picks around #12-15 in each round, depending on how the other current 6 and 7 win teams finish up. KC, Oakland, and Sea all have tiebreaks on us so would pick behind if records end up tied. There are only 12 teams with less than 7 wins right now.

Julio Jones & Green were single digit picks last year if memory serves. But your point about Floyd is a good one. I'm all for it if our idiot GM can actually sign an OT in FA who can be an upgrade over Webb. I want a playmaker somehow and I am also sick of the false starts, holding calls, and 5+ sack games.

I'd like to see an FA WR and a 1st round pick WR. We need to completely overhaul this garbage staff. That would mean Hester is the primary backup; and Bennett is the only one left starting. That would make me ecstatic. If we grab an OL in FA also, bonus.

Picking at #12-15 and getting help in the form of a team trading down and Blackmon falling has gone from pipe dream to semi-far fetched.
Arguing on the internet is like winning the special olympics, even if you win your still messed up.

who talked about moving down? JA/Chicago don't move down. But you could get Floyd(ND) which has been talked about going mid round and is not a stretch.

currently we have the 19 pick in the draft
-
we will draft a CB with our 1st, a Saftey with our 2nd, a OT with our CAR 3rd and trade our 3rd for a 4th and later pick. with this 4th we pick another Saftey and out 4th will be the WR we need.
after the Draft we will be disappointed again
