Probably the basics that Martz wasn't
-able to audible
-able to rollout in the pocket
-balanced running attack
-better use of TE
I believe Martz was forced to do these things either by the coaches, Jay or both. An OC that can evaluate talent unbiased (WR's cough, cough), and the ability to adapt faster in game w/o taking weeks and being hit over the head. Too bad Norv is staying in SD, he might have been a good fit.
Needs to be a system that fits Jay! Where he can audible, rollout, and make decisions on the run! Obviously easier said than done, but it's been done with Tebow! Sorry to bring him up!

Having said that, it's not that Martz' playbook or scheme itself was a wrong fit for Jay. In fact, he runs the same type of Air Coryell passing scheme Jay thrived in under Shanahan in Denver - albeit much more rigid and complex. The system in which Martz ruled the scheme (with an iron fist) is what killed him outside of his retarded playcalling. He is made for a more true version of the WCO which Martz separated himself from. Hell, Jay could have thrived like crazy in Martz' scheme if he was allowed to make pre-snap adjustments, IMHO. It was never about the scheme with Martz, it was the system under which the scheme was run that ruined any chances of consistent success. He was stubborn and arrogant in his refusal to stick with 3-5 step drops with six blockers on every play, even though we saw Jay have tremendous success with those calls. He was so dedicated to and fixated on the end of his playbook with five blockers and seven step drops on long developing routes that he somehow thought he could will us to run those plays despite the lack of personnel (especially at OT) needed to run those plays with regular success.
Give me a WCO system with a coordinator who allows for at the line QB reads and adjustments, and I'll be ecstatic. Give me any system run by a coordinator who does those secondary things and I'll be satisfied. With a QB as talented as Jay, it's less about the system than it is about the guy running it. I just want someone who won't run back-to-back FB dives in clutch and short (RT), or end arounds and screen passes inside the red zone with the game on the line (MM).

Cutler has shown to thrive in multiple systems so I'm not worried about that. My concern is getting legit talent on offense already. Stafford in his third year is a 5000 yard qb cause they invest in their offense. Rogers just about consensus MVP thanks to them investing in offense. Brees, brady, etc blah blah frickin blah
Time to step out of the stone age already. Bears football has only produced one SUPERBOWL I'm sick of that bullshit. Many teams have competent passing attacks in shit weather no excuses anymore. Take advantage of the rule changes morons learn adapt blah blah

I've heard on here that Jeremy Bates would be a good pick for an offensive coordinator for the Bears. I know little about his playcalling as I did not keep up with him when he was in Denver (he was in Denver, correct?), but I do remember back a few years ago how Cutler had designed roll outs and there was more consistent running of the football.
We need to get a new left tackle, and fast. I've been screaming this a lot lately, but when will the team finally look at Carimi as a potential LT and force Webb into accepting a position as the swing guy or just flat-out cutting him in favor of someone else? I am just hopeful that OMG never dons the navy blue, orange, and white colors of a Bears uniform again.
Also, we need a big wide receiver, which there will be a few of those available in the draft this year. I don't know if the Bears will attempt to trade up to get one or not, or if they will seek on at the 19th draft position or wait and attempt to draft Al Toon in the 2nd Round. It will be interesting, but those are the two areas of greatest need as far as I'm concerned.
Bates was Cutler's QB coach while at Denver before their regime change. I'm pretty sure he went on to USC to OC under Pete Carroll and Carroll brought him to Seattle to skip out on any possible NCAA violations ...I mean... to coach.
