Really mo, plenty of TE's that would shit on him? in his final 2 years w/Chicago he was 10th in rec's for TE's both years, 12th and 11th in yards and 7th and 4th in TD's. That's pretty solid production, basically top 3rd, or better, in his position w/us. And that was w/a garbage OL, no WR's to keep people from looking at him and RT making the play calls.
Under Martz his #'s drop significantly except for TD's that were still top 10, this year w/a new team and splitting time w/Shockey and Steve Smith his #'s increased slightly from Martz's and his TD's for the first time were not top 10, he was 12th. I'd say if he was on our team, and was used by an OC worth a damn it's not hard to imagine he would have still been a top 3rd TE since he would have had little to no competition to share the ball with.

Garza was actually pretty good last year. I'm glad that he got extended for the next couple of seasons. In a sense, I'm glad that we didn't re-sign Olin Kreutz because his heart wasn't in the right place to play professional football anymore. He was named captain of the Saints offense in his first year with the team, and then he bails on them and goes into retirement? No fucking way! Besides, we got a better deal with Garza and more production out of him this year than we had gotten out of Kreutz and his penalty-riddled ass in the previous five seasons.

Pettiegrew is not better then him not even close neither is Winslow or Fred Davism or Celek, at best they are on the same level. Gonzales was maybe a few years ago, but not so much anymore; and Gates is going to quickly go the way of Gonzales. Again Olsen..w/OUR team and w/an OC that KNOWS that the TE is allowed to be an offensive weapon would be a top 10 TE, at least a top 3rd TE and proved it. Which btw you agree with. Being the top 3rd in your position is not average. Being top 10 in TD's except for 1 year is not average.

Who said anything about giving Olsen $7 mil per year? Did Carolina give him that much? No, the average annual $$$ of his deal is $4.9 mil but only $6.2 mil is guaranteed. His cap cost this coming year is a little over $4 mil so I don't know where that $ 7 mil comes from mo.

Greg Olsen may have been an average all around TE but he was an above average pass catcher and we basically traded off his production for Roy Williams. Not a real good bargain I'd say. I think the real point to be made here is that Angelo traded him away because he didn't want to pay him because he didn't fit in Martz's offense. At that time how did he even know Martz would be around in 2012. He'd already turned down an extension and he was plainly chafed by the restrictions put on him.

It's just another example of the illogical moves Angelo has made. Just like signing Chester Taylor before we even knew what Kahlil Bell could do given half a chance. The kid cracked off a 72 yard run on his first play from scrimmage and averaged 4.5 ypc backing Forte in 2009. The kid was a good back. You could see it then and you can see it now. Was the Taylor signing another Martz request?

Too early for an accurate list. I may be able to find one that lists the UFA's but many of those guys will be resigned before they become official free agents.

If I had been Martz, I would have switched Olsen from TE to WR. He was so valuable as a pass catcher and we wasted that talent. I still think Kellen Davis can be a great TE with a little work on his blocking with Tice. If you had those two guys in the game catching passes, Olsen as a receiver and Davis as the tight end, a lot of the red zone issues would have been taken care of.

Which should have made him all the more aggressive towards finding another LT and he failed to do it. It's hard to figure how he blew the Bushrod deal when all NO was offering him was a 2 year deal with no signing bonus.

Whether or not we'd have been better off with Kruetz or without as we were it was still sloppy work on JA's part. The final straw was his one hour ultimatum to a guy who'd been the backbone of your Oline for 10 years. Ruben Brown gave us a couple of solid years before he went downhill. The Garza thing worked but all that drama with Kruetz didn't make him look very good in the eyes of the fans and it went against what the coaching staff wanted.

Once again Olsen wasn't asking for nor is he getting $7 mil per year. Actually there's less than that guaranteed in his contract which is 5 years for $24,700 total but $13mil plus comes in years 4 and 5 and he may never see that. It's more like he's making around a $3mil per year for 2011-2013.

Jerry Angelo committed hubris on so many levels this past offseason that it had to be a given that he was going to be fired as GM of the Bears. To screw over a lifelong Bear like Kreutz was just awful, and it essentially ruined his desire to ever play football again. On top of that, he went against what the coaches wants in so many ways with that call. He, as soul mentioned, didn't get Bushrod, didn't even try to go out after Sidney Rice, whiffed on Willie Colon, and then brought in the Dallas connection with what must have been his thought in mind that "America's Team" would contribute to the Bears' long term success. What he found was a bunch of shit that came out of a deal: a drug pusher, a WR who can't hold onto the damn ball, and a really dumb running back. I think that the Sam Hurd fiasco played a lot into the decision to fire Angelo since it was he who brought that negative publicity to the doorstep of Halas Hall, whether he knew it or not.
