I'm Satisfied....................For Now!
Of course whether or not I'm satisfied has no more impact on the Bears 2012 fortunes than it does on the sun rising in the East come morning. Still, I think what can be done has been done. Going into this season it was very clear that Jerry Angelo had failed the team the coaches and the fans as far as acquiring the talent needed to keep pace with an improving NFC North Division.
What made matters worse was his attitude surrounding that failure. In training camp when asked about that failure he arrogantly challenged sportwriters to tell him who he should be signing or should have signed when the answers to that were very obvious and had been discussed for over 6 months. Then in an interview just prior to the first Lions game he threw his team and coaching staff under the bus by insisting that the talent was there and implying that the players and coaching staff were not living up to expectations.
Of course this preceded a game where the Bears offensive line, the very thing which needed offseason fixes the most, was annihilated by the Lions and that very talented Angelo free agent acquistion Frank Omiyale was benched after allowing sacks on virtually every passing play. Talk about looking like a complete asshole Jer, man I want to tell you you sure brought it on yourself that night.
The coup de grace though was deciding to pass on McNabb, not offer a trade for Orton when he found out the Broncos were ready to waive him to assure that he got him and overestimating both Hanie and Martz's ability to operate an offense that could win enough games to get us to the playoffs.
For almost all of last years and all of this year I have been a critic of Mike Martz as the Bears OC. Even though this will mean a new OC and still another offensive system for Jay Cutler the alternative of retaining Martz would only meant another year of the same. Especially with Angelo still in charge of the personnel pocket book.
I'm satisfied with the fact that Ted Phillips and George McCaskey chose to disregard dollars and do what needed doing now before the team collapsed on itself even more. I'll also applaud them for not tearing things completely apart by firing Lovie and his staff thereby giving the new GM a mandate to improve player personnel immediately knowing that he won't be distracted by the search for a new HC or have too little cap space to do the job which needs doing.
So for now this seems like enough. I'm sure there are those who would have liked to have seen Lovie gone as well but for the reasons I've given I do think not firing him too was the right move. There's a lot to be done but if they can hire their guy fairly soon there is both plenty of time and money to get the job done. Then with more of the right talent and depth in place Lovie and his staff get that shot at a championship that injuries and incompetence deprived them of this year.
I'm satisfied............for now.

I'm glad for ya, but the bears still dont know how to clean house. They're learning, but noot there yet....

LOL, not going after mcnabb and Orton....
I have a great idea, let's bring in a new offensive scheme this year and then clean house again next year. I prefer a new system every year.

Exactly....JA did plenty of legitimate bonehead moves over the years to justify his firing...no need to be re-writing history...
At the time, it was a reasonable belief/gamble that with Hanie we could win the few required games to make the playoffs....

I still maintain that a complete house cleaning would do more harm than good right now. Getting rid of Jerry Angelo was a surgical move. I believe our problems are far more related to personnel than they are coaching. We struggled early this season because Angelo failed to supply the players needed to successfully operate behind Martz offense.
When Cutler took matters in his own hands and began to operate within his own strengths and those around him we went on a tear. Cutler goes down, we have no one capable of replacing him that way and we lose 5 games and get whisked right out of the playoffs. I don't think Caleb Hanie is as bad as he looked but he sure didn't know what he was doing out there. Any QB who spends two years in an offensive system and can't operate it when called upon makes me think that system is screwed. McCown only looked marginally better because he'd played in it before and Martz gave him far different game plans that he gave Hanie. Well Martz is gone now too and that's the other great news of the week. That was also a surgical attack because so far the rest of the staff is still on the job.
If Jerry Angelo set Martz up to fail by not getting the players needed because he was against him to begin with and Martz set Hanie up to fail because he didn't like him to begin with then they both deserved their respective fates. I think the underlying friction between the front office and the coaching staff has been bubbling just below the surface for at least the last two years.
Others beside you may also disagree but I believe firing the coaching staff now would be counterproductive to getting back into a winning mode. That would have been dropping a bomb that would have blown everything up and put us in a complete rebuilding mode. I think that wouldn't have been fair to guys like Urlacher, Briggs, Peppers and Tillman who have put their heart and souls into winning a championship.
If you fire the coaching staff you might just as well hang out a for sale for draft choices sign on all of those guys and start over again. I don't think we're that far off the mark that with some key additions and a better approach to the offense this can't be turned around quickly. JMO.

The truth is that Lovie has done a remarkable job with turning this team into a contender for about half of his years spent as the head coach. Where were the Bears prior to Lovie? Dave Wannestedt and Dick Jauron were horrible - Jauron had that one good year and the rest were actually worse than Wanny's career with the Bears. Lovie's record currently stands at 71-57-0, good for a .555 winning percentage. If that doesn't convince you that he is a winner (remember that in eight seasons as a head coach, he has finished with a .500 or better record five times), I don't know what will.
Lovie may not be the best game day strategist out there, but he knows how to issue coach's challenges and, most importantly, is a master motivator of men. That last quality has been his saving grace because his teams have rarely been talented enough on paper to win big. Lovie's teams always play over their heads, which is what makes Lovie a good coach. If Eric DeCosta is hired on as GM of the Bears as it looks like might happen, I am going to be really eager to see what will happen in the draft. I think there is a good chance that the defense could get stronger AND there will be an influx of offensive talent.

Soul that wasn't true for San Fran or atl a few years back and if I wasn't high right now I could probably come up with allot more like the tebow led broncos
Going with a new look could energize what looks like a franchise on the decline. If lovie fails next year what value is there in starting over again a year later? Now that if anything else sets us back more so then a full house cleaning.
All we can do is wait and see what happens now

I see your point mo but I still believe if you dust the coaching staff too you put a giant order on the plate of a GM who hasn't even been hired yet and who knows how much longer that will take. In addition to that you have to take into consideration the enormous respect his defensive stars have for him. If you fire Lovie and his staff you may just as well trade those guys for the draft choices to rebuild with ala Dallas and Jimmy Johnson because you'll have a whole bunch of unhappy campers on that side of the ball.
I also think Lovie has Jay Cutler absolute loyalty since he met with him and asked for his input before he let Martz go. I really don't see much difference in beginning a rebuild next year as opposed to this one. If Lovie can't turn things around at least the new GM will have had a year to digest what needs to be done and the shortest route to get there. I'd just like to see them get this done with the guys we have here since the players overwhelming favor Lovie and their coaches.
The other factor is whether or not there is actually any better choice than Lovie out there who would take the job. I don't think you'd see proven winners like Gruden or Cowher expressing any interest and Jeff Fisher isn't really an improvement on Lovie no matter how much he'd like to coach here. JMO brother.
