Lovie Smith will be the HC for a while
As I stated in another thread, I do not believe that Lovie Smith is going anywhere anytime soon. Reasons I stated earlier were that in the presser that announced Angelo's firing it was said that
The New GM would have to be able to work with Lovie.
And
The New GM would have to understand Lovie's philosophy
Now there is another reason. Lovie himself will be involved in hiring the New GM.
Do not be surprised if Lovie gets an extension soon after the new GM is hired

I think this one is more appropriate in this case:

this is my biggest fear, that we hire one of "Lovie's buddies" and really nothing changes.

With any luck, we'll get DeCosta or McKenzie. I'll be happy with either of those two guys since they are young up-and-comers.

I'd like to pitch in on this too.
1) Work with Lovie and understand his philosophy; Yes, but only to a degree. Lovie still needs to prove his philosophy is capable of winning championships.
2) Lovie will be involved with the hiring process; True, and while his input will be valued and respected he won't have the final say and he will haver to acknowledge that the GM is still his superior and can fire him if he doesn't succeed.
3) Lovie will get an extension soon after the GM hire; No way that happens. Lovie has the protection of the team President and Ownership for one year and one year only. No one would take the job if Lovie was secured for another two or three years. Although this new arrangement may seem like a marriage it's more of an engagement. If Lovie turns the team around next year and competes for a championship he'll finish out his deal in 2013 and may get an extension if he keeps the team in contention but you can't risk extending the guy until 2015 on the basis of his record over the past five years.
From my observations and based upon Des Clarks tweet things have not been as simpatico between Lovie and Jer as they would have had us believe. The Olin Kruetz situation was a sneak peak at what's been going on for the last year or so. Remember Lovie and Tice wanted Kruetz back and they weren't all that high on Spencer to begin with or they would have moved him to OC immediately. As it turned out Garza proved to be a pretty good OC and Spencer a pretty good RG so in the long run it worked out but it's a good example to Angelo going against Lovie's wishes.
My guess is that Lovie also wasn't happy with Angelo's failures to stock the offense with players Martz could work with. I think the truth of it was that Martz made a list of needs, Lovie brought them to Angelo, but Angelo made the decisions about how to fill those spots. The last two offseasons have been a personnel nightmare and you can't hang that on Lovie. That's Angelo's province. If my boss was constantly undermining by efforts to succeed and putting my job at risk I wouldn't be too happy about it either and I'm sure Lovie wasn't. But that's not something he'd air in public. Not his way.
I'm getting to that age where a lifetime warranty just doesn't mean as much to me anymore as an afternoon nap.

To put it in perspective....ANY GM coming in, has to know that they have ultimate authority. If they believe that they are held to the whims of the HC, then whats the point? Lets say Lovie screws up, we finish 7-9 next year, miss the playoffs again...if Lovie is in charge, then they can just scapegoat the GM again, Lovie keeps his job and they can find another GM. Thats crazy.
Lovie may have a say in who is GM, but its not the FINAL say...that is going to reside with Ted and George. And dont get it confused...Lovie's future with the Bears is tied to how the Bears do next year, good or bad.
