Chicago Bears The Protection is so good.....

The protection is so good, he can just stand back there. WOW ! I would love to hear that week in week out in / for the BEARS. Cutler would ROCK. OK dream time is over. NEED to fix the line before anything else . I dont care who they get as WR's, if you dont protect Cutler it wont matter. OK rant over. Enjoy the rest of GOOD football in the playoffs. Maybe someone is taking notes

I think we're getting closer to a time when that can happen. Carimi has a lock on RT and has shown he can do it so if we can just get somebody at LT who can get the job done game after game unlike Webb who runs so hot and cold we'll be well on the way. The inside guys all improved as the year progressed, especially EWill.

Tice won't be running an offense full of 7 step drops and slow developing routes either. When he coached at Minny they used to kill us with the quick slants guys like Burleson and Carter ran and I think you'll see a lot of that coming off of 3 step drops. I think they'll also be more play action and roll outs and Tice has already declared that Cutler will be given the option to audible at the line something Martz never permitted.

I think the line will look better just because they won't constantly be asked to do the impossible.
I'm getting to that age where a lifetime warranty just doesn't mean as much to me anymore as an afternoon nap.

I believe step one is to determine a better LT perhaps by FA (while cutting Omiyale).
Step two would be getting a C to replace Garza-Spencer is seemingly a better OG than C. Do that while getting a WR in FA along with drafting one high and it's a giant step forward imo.

One option for the Bears would be to trade up to about the 10th pick in the draft (Buffalo's pick), and draft someone like Jonathan Martin to play LT. He would be a giant find and a great player to have, and we have an additional third rounder to use to trade up for him.

Sounds good Dags. The million dollar question is: Does Tice believe Webb is the continued answer at LT? Has anyone asked him this in interviews?

I listened to an interview he did with some of the Chicago ESPN guys shorty. No one asked him anything about Webb specifically but he never brought him up either so I take that to mean if you couldn't say something good say nothing at all. Conversely he commented on the OC situation and was very complimentary of Graza his intelligence and his overall play (he is a pro bowl alternate in his first year as an OC) and also complimenting Spencer and EWill both as regular OC's playing out of position at OG. From that I would guess he's very satisfied with the OC position and we did extend Garza for two more years.

If there was a chance of trading that third to move up for an honest of goodness good right out of the box LT I think we should do it. I think we made the right choice in drafting Carimi last year but Tice wants him to remain at RT so we still have to find someone to push Webb out of the LT spot. We need to get lucky again.

Even if we traded both third rounders, we still wouldn't get the 10th overall pick. According to the draft chart here anyways. Draft Countdown - Trade Value Chart

And, according to that chart, you wouldn't be able to trade the 7th and 8th pick for the 1st.

Like, what team would turn that down?

I agree with your line of thought there. What's the best "bang for your buck" every team thinks about getting with a 1st round pick? An immediate impact player you can't get out of FA who becomes the XX "of the next decade". The Bears don't need a franchise QB, RB, or even defensive player (you might make an arguement for a shutdown CB but I don't think that's wise for us). The only positions that seem to make sense for us are WR, LT, and maybe DE...with the first 2 being more "impactful" as we are so clearly lacking there.

So much depends on what we can accomplish in FA. Signing a VJax takes away the temptation/need to go for broke on (risky) WR in #1. DE is also potentially signable in FA and/or there are a number of promising pass rushing prospects who could be available to us in mid-2 to rotate in with Izzy and develop. LT is the one position and obvious hole that we can't fill later in the draft or in FA unless you're willing to settle for a stop-gap compromise.

If the new GM has a strong FA, which he f'ing BETTER have, it makes a ton of sense to go balls out in moving up in #1 to get a franchise LT. Kalil is out of reach but Martin & Reiff might not be. From what I've read, they're both stellar LT prospects with Martin > Reiff. It would sure be nice to see Jay be protected for the very 1st time in Chi and be able to use what we all know are elite QB skills.
