Jennings has the heart of a lion and plays with more piss and vinegar running through his veins than anyone on that defense, but he lacks a lot of the tools and thus talent it takes to really be a super effective Cover Two corner. Most of the passing yards that are given up are on his side of the field from what I've seen because of his lack of height, and his inability to hold on to potential interceptions is well chronicled. The more I think about this, the more I'm willing to give in and say that if we don't get a LT in the first round, we should pick up a CB. I think we can take care of getting a DE in free agency.
Well first we need to find out whether or not Jennings is coming back. He made about $2 mil last season and is said to be looking for more than that. If they're gonna make a backup CB/NB out of him they won't be willing to pay him like a strarter so we need to see how that goes. Fortunately Kirkpatrick plays his position and is kind of a Tillman clone in terms of his size and style of play. I saw him make some great tackles in the BCSC game but couldn't get much of a viewpoint on his coverage abilites since LSU never threw the ball much. Scouting report makes him a good fit for a zone system though.

That's what I've heard and read as well. Alabama comes at offenses with a lot of different looks, so Kirkpatrick would naturally be well-prepared for success in the league from the perspective. I'm almost torn as to what position to take between CB and DE. Both are big needs on defense, and we're sure to be held hostage by Tim Jennings' agent.

Maybe the advantage we have drafting where we do is that we have several needs we can address and there can be some good prospects in that last part of the round in positions of need. Look at where we got Carimi last year. So we wait on how the picks before us are falling and see whose still on the board from 15th on. That's about as far as we can afford to move up for a specific guy and I think that would only be for a LT or a DE we wanted badly enough. JMO.

It's coming from PFW but FWIW the Bears are looking to re-sign Izzy. Despite his sack production declining I think we gotta see this as a good thing. He's real "team guy" and I'm sure one of the locker room leaders. I just like his effort because I never see him take plays off. I think he'd be even better if he had a pass rush partner of work in rotation with him.

Bears expected to push to re-sign Idonije

Bears expected to push to re-sign Idonije

Following are some whispers that we've been hearing from around the NFC:
    • Their decision-making process on potential free agents won't kick into high gear until the Bears hire a new general manager, but indications are the Bears will push to re-sign Israel Idonije, who started every game opposite Julius Peppers at defensive end in 2011. Idonije has the support of the coaching staff and is favored by some of the most powerful members of the front office.

Izzy should be re-signed, but he should be the swing guy who comes in to give Peppers and whoever we draft/sign in FA a breather.

Let's not forget that Carimi also fell to us because of a knee injury that currently has him not being able to start for us. So yes, we did get lucky, but it wasn't pure luck. We would be very fortunate to pick up Dre and I for one would love it. That or a beast of a DE.

That would be the way I would hope it go too Zelezo. If Reiff fell that far you probably couldn't pass but that's as likely to happen as me becoming the Bears backup QB. Beyond that I just don't have a great feel for Floyd as the guy we should draft. We need the big guy in FA and we need to spend that second or the high third on a WR. I base that on preferring the second best CB or DE to the fourth best WR. Every draft seems to have one or two can't miss WR's and then there's little spread between the next half dozen. JMO.

Remember, though, that Marques Colston was a 7th Round pick in 2006 for the Saints at WR. There are gems found all over the place. Colston came in and immediately made a difference for the Saints.

By the way, I want the Bears to sign Colston because I think he has the most intangibles of the "big three" receivers out there.

I imagine he'd come cheaper than Jackson but I don't know if you'd consider him a true #1 guy. Of course I've never been convinced we need that guy who catches 80 balls a year. If Knox comes back healthy and advances his skills and Bennett keeps improving a guy like Colston who can help control the middle of the field along with a pass catching TE and we make a pretty good passing game from that.

Jay Cutler needs that bigger body go up and get it guy to compliment the relationship he already has with Bennett and to a lesser extent Knox. Colston would be a good catch, Jackson would be a great catch. JMO

I'd pick up Reiff, unless the reason he falls is because of some big injury. We don't need to potentially great tackles with injury issues. I'm completely sold on Michael Floyd. I respect that you don't want him because you think we can shore up the WR hole in FA (which we can) and that the pick can be best used elsewhere if that's the case (which is also true). But Michael Floyd is beast. He will do very well. That's my opinion, and the opinion of many people out there. I don't wanna pick up some DE however if he looks like he has potential but will be rotational after Izzy. There's gonna be somebody on the board when it comes to our pick who will be a game changer, and that's who we need to pick up.
