With Fisher out, Bears' Toub in the mix for Dolphins job
When Jeff Fisher took the Rams' job on Friday, it meant Bears special teams coordinator Dave Toub is still alive in his bid to become the head coach of the Dolphins.
Toub interviewed for the job last week and is one of a handful of candidates now in the picture for the Dolphins, who were aiming to land the former Titans coach Fisher.
The Dolphins also have interviewed Packers offensive coordinator Joe Philbin, interim head coach Todd Bowles and Bengals defensive coordinator Mike Zimmer. NFL.com reported Saturday that Zimmer could be lined up for a second interview with the Dolphins. Miami also might want to talk to Broncos offensive coordinator Mike McCoy.
Even if Toub doesn't land the job, he could leave for another team beginning Monday. Toub is coming out of contract with the Bears and a 15-day period of exclusive negotiating rights for the Bears ends Monday. Toub isn't going to sign up for any job as long as he's in the mix in Miami. But if that door closes, he could leave the Bears. Toub's special teams unit finished third in the NFL in comprehensive rankings this past season.
It's not known if the Bears have laid groundwork for a new contract for Toub. The Bears are in the midst of a search for a passing game coordinator/quarterbacks coach as well as an offensive line coach to work under new offensive coordinator Mike Tice.

Toss another hat in the mix for the job.... Broncos OC Mike McCoy is supposedly interviewing with Miami this week.
I can't see Toub uprooting & going to another team to be a special teams coach. He has some past D-Line coaching experience, so maybe a DC job is in his future somewhere.

The Bears should be willing to spend money on a quality passing game coordinator/QB coach, but after hearing several Tice interviews it appears he is looking for a 'yes man' to carry on his current O-Line system, so it will probably be filled with a young up & coming coach. There should be money left to give Toub another 1-2 yrs with Da Bears.

I agree that Toub should be made one one of the highest paid coordinators in the league and offered a two year extension that coincides with the remaining time in Lovie's deal. The benefits the Bears get from their ST play is at least as great if not greater than any other team in the league. Toub has done a tremendous job of keeping performance high even though he's lost some of his best players. Year after year the Bears special teams rank at the top of the league so the guy is worth holding onto.
I'm getting to that age where a lifetime warranty just doesn't mean as much to me anymore as an afternoon nap.

Nice find JJ. I've been wondering all morning whether we'd hear some news on it or not. It was reported that they were working on negotiating a new deal with him. One of the main reasons I want to keep him here is that he could well be a candidate for the Bears HC job if by chance Lovie fails to put us back in contention next year.
If there's one coach on this team who knows how to coach up talent it's him. Every year he gets handed half a dozen newbies to make coverage and return teams out of and he always gets it done.

Sometimes this is what I hate about the Bears. He has to be paid just slightly less than the guy whose paid the most. The very thought of making any one player or coach THE highest paid at his position must make Ted Phillips physically ill or something. It's not so much that their cheap as the are annoying.
