Martz is History so Time to Start Throwing to the TE Again..............

    Chicago Bears Report

To improve, Bears must re-emphasize TEs

    By Jeff Dickerson

Rob Grabowski/US PresswireTight ends Greg Olsen and Kellen Davis were marginalized in Mike Martz's system.

There was once a time when the Bears' tight end position averaged roughly 87 catches and 883 receiving yards over a span of three years. It was 2007-2009.

Not long ago, the Bears had on their roster the most productive tight end duo in franchise history: Greg Olsen and Desmond Clark.

Olsen, Chicago's 2007 first-round draft choice, saw his receptions steadily rise under former offensive coordinator Ron Turner, going from 39 as a rookie to 54 in 2008 then a team-high 60 in 2009. Clark, the ninth all-team leading receiver in team history, suffered through an injured-plagued 2009 campaign, but was still considered an effective option for the Bears in the passing game -- the veteran averaged 43 catches and 513 yards the prior three seasons (2006-2008).
So with Olsen and Clark firmly in the mix, the Bears could finally consider tight end a strength of the offense moving forward.

Then Mike Martz was hired as the team's offensive coordinator on Feb. 1, 2010. It was like the day the music died.

Here is a quick run-down of what happened at tight end the next two years:

Martz pushed for the Bears to sign Brandon Manumaleuna, who caught five passes for 43 yards and a touchdown in 2010. He was cut after failing his physical in July 2011. Clark had his role reduced to the point that he dressed for a mere five regular-season games in 2010. He was brought back as a free agent the following year then suffered a minor injury and was released prior to the beginning of the regular season. The team instead opted to keep undrafted rookie free agent Kyle Adams, who eventually landed on injured reserve.

Olsen's production declined dramatically in 2010 – his receptions dipped from 60 the year prior to Martz's arrival to 41 in the new offense. Olsen was then traded to Carolina for a third-round pick prior to the 2011 season.

The Bears signed another blocking tight end in Matt Spaeth to replace Manumaleuna. Spaeth had seven catches in 2011. The end result of Martz's vision: a combined 25 catches for 256 yards from Kellen Davis and Spaeth in 2011.

While Martz and the Bears succeeded in turning the tight end spot into a complete nonfactor on offense, others around the NFL took a much different approach to the position. Coincidently, or maybe not, several of those teams qualified for the divisional round of the postseason, where they continued to feature their tight ends and use them as vertical threats down the field.

TIGHT END PRODUCTION AMONG PLAYOFF TEAMS

Jimmy Graham Saints 99 rec., 1,130 yards, 11 TDs 12 rec., 158 yards, 3 TDs
Rob Gronkowski Patriots 90 rec., 1,327 yards, 17 TDs 10 rec., 145 yards, 3 TDs
Aaron Hernandez Patriots 79 rec., 910 yards, 7 TDs 4 rec., 55 yards, 1 TD; 61 rush yards
Jermichael Finley Packers 55 rec., 767 yards, 8 TDs 4 rec., 37 yards
    Vernon Davis 49ers 67 rec., 792 yards, 6 TDs 7 rec., 180 yards, 2 TDs

It should be noted Martz, oddly enough a former tight end himself at Fresno State, worked with Davis in 2008 while offensive coordinator of the 49ers. Predictably, Davis languished in Martz’s system, catching a mere 31 balls for 358 yards a pair of touchdowns. However, once San Francisco fired Martz, Davis exploded the following year and posted a career-best 78 receptions for 965 yards and 13 touchdowns.

Coincidence? Hardly. Just another example of how Martz selfishly and stubbornly chooses his "system" instead of properly evaluating the talent on his roster and coaching to their strengths, not his own.

Now comes the question of how the Bears are going to salvage the neglected tight end position. Obviously, getting rid of Martz and elevating Mike Tice was the first step, but are the Bears in need of a serious personnel upgrade?

Maybe not, according to Bears head coach Lovie Smith.

"We have an excellent tight end," Smith said at his end of the year press conference. "We brought Matt Spaeth here to primarily be a blocker for us and he filled that role well. Kellen Davis can do anything the good tight ends in this league can do. As a catcher if we focus in on him, we can make him more of a guy that people are talking about just based on throwing him the ball more. So I think we have an excellent tight end with good speed, size. I think we had a combination of as good a tight end, the makings of, as anyone around in Kellen."

Sounds as if Smith expects a Vernon Davis-type leap from Kellen Davis, an unrestricted free agent, in 2012. While it's an interesting premise laid out by Smith, just remember, Vernon Davis is a former first-round pick (No. 6 overall in 2006) with first-round talent. Kellen Davis went in the fifth round. Some would argue for good reason

I miss Greg's production (compared to ol' Rwill) but not his blocking or lack of ability to shed a crappy tackle. At least now we can find a TE and develop him.

Develop a player? The BEARS could be great if the coaching staff was able to develop players.

Of course we've already discussed this in a couple of other threads but anytime there's a chance to demonstrate just how fucked up Martz's approach to the game is these days I want to take a shot at highlighting it.

Dickerson is correct when he says that Clark and Olsen were the best TE pass catching duo the Bears had had in decades. That put us in step with the rest of the league and gave Cutler some of is better targets since we lacked any great WR's. Then along comes Martz and sets up back a decade with an offensive system that hasn't produced any winners since his days as OC for the Rams.

Nowhere is the idiocy of this more glaringly apparent than his misuse of Vernon Davis when he was the OC of the 49'ers. He took one of the best receiving TE's to come out of college since Tony Gonzales and practically neutered him in his system with results similar to what he got with Spaeth and K. Davis this past year. Then as soon as Martz leaves and V. Davis gets back into the passing game his production nearly triples. So If you're a pass happy OC running a pass oriented offense how is it that you choose to ignore one of your best pass receivers?

Dickerson is spot on with his analysis when he describes Martz as selfish and stubborn to which I'll also add arrogant and ignorant. How does a guy refuse to throw to his TE's when they're catching passes and scoring TD's? As I've pointed before at one point early this year K. Davis had caught 3 TD's in his last 5 passes. Pretty good conversion rate right? So tell me why he gets only another handful of passes for the rest of the season?

I think sometimes Lovie hypes guys beyond their ability to contribute but in Kellen Davis' case I think he may be on to something. I remember him catching a TD pass last year and I thought it was in that final regular season game against the Packers. The catch he made and the athleticism he showed getting into the end zone was impressive. He showed a lot more ability to stretch out and get YAC than Olsen ever showed. I don't think he's much slower than Olsen either and he's certainly a better blocker.

The bottom line is that if Martz had used his TE's more in the redzone and on first and goal drives we would have had to settle for FG's far less than we did. Rodgers and Finley killed us an others down there and so have others but we ignore the advantage that gives us with 6'7" targets to throw to. When he does finally call a play to the TE it's a crazy ass kind of screen that almost get's run back to a score. Nobody believed it was a good call yet he defended it by saying that it always worked for him and them threw his QB under the bus by criticizing the execution.

I think under Tice we'll see the reemergence of our TE's as pass catchers. Olsen is gone but he can be replaced is not by Davis then by someone else. I disagree that a TE has to be a top 10 pick to be a top performer. Davis was an exceptional player coming out of college but Finley and Graham were 3rd round picks, Hernandez a 4th and Gronkowski a 2nd which proves a guy doesn't need to be a 1st round pick to become a good TE.

I don't see Spaeth as ever being much of a receiver but Davis has a good chance if they throw to him. There's also Andre Smith and Kyle Adams on the roster already and neither has been tried in that manner. It wouldn't bother me to see us draft another but it would be nice to find out if we don't have some talent already on the roster.

I dont miss any former bear on offense from the whacked out JA era. But Im envious of other teams when I see developed talent like Gates, Hernandez, Gronk, Gresham, Graham, etc...... Why do we have to be such a fucked up offense year in and year out

After watching the playoffs, i kept seeing former Bears: Danieal Manning in Houston, Brendan Ayanbadejo (ST STUD for us) in Baltimore, Mark Anderson in NE....sad to see our former players enjoying the playoffs while our team sits at home.

Well let's see what happens this year with an OC who'll build around what he has rather than what he wishes he had. I see some potential in Davis but if he doesn't step up and realize that potential this year and no one else on the roster looks any better we need to go shopping for another TE.

None of those guys were first round picks but they all play for teams who realize how important a good receiving TE is to an offense. Look at the stats Clark and Olsen turned in before Martz arrived. Then Martz trys to turn Olsen into a blocking back half the time and Clark sits inactive for most of the year in 2011. This year we trade Olsen before the season begins.

Mike Martz added nothing to the Bears passing game. For the most part he subtracted from it.

I think letting Manning go before we knew what we had in Major Wright was a big mistake but he would have been an expensive signing. Now let's just hope they don't get stupid with Graham and lose another great ST guy and a damn good backup defensive back. Lovie really needs to give him his shot on the defense this year if not at CB then I'd let him have a go at SS.

Other then Manning we havent missed any of those guys. Ayanbadejo was replaced easily. Mark Anderson just didnt fit our system once people figured out his one and only move big deal. And Manning is ok but Im not crying about losing him for the contract he got.

and my comment pertained to offensive talent. From the guys not on our team anymore who would you pine for really? I think Olsen is weak I dont care if everyone overrates him.
