Former Bears offensive coordinator Mike Martz has decided to retire from coaching.
“It’s time,” he told the Sun-Times.
Martz didn’t elaborate on his decision. But he’ll turn 61 in May, and he’s had a full career, one that started at Bullard High School in Fresno, CA in 1973. He transitioned to college football, working his way up the ranks, before joining the Los Angeles Rams as the quarterbacks coach in 1992. He was named offensive coordinator in 1999, leading the famed “Greatest Show on Turf” that set several NFL records en route to a victory in Super Bowl XXXIV.
He was named head coach of the Rams in 2000, after Dick Vermeil retired, and he led the Rams back to the Super Bowl. But, after a 14-2 season, the Rams were defeated by the New England Patriots, 20-17, in Super Bowl XXXVI.
He was fired in 2005, then became the offensive coordinator of the Detroit Lions. He also had a run with the San Francisco 49ers before joining the Bears for the 2010 season.
The NFL Network initially reported that Martz had decided to retire

Ya know, it would've helped his HOF resume if he did it a few years ago. Kinda like when Pace came here from the Rams...

I'll believe this if he's still retired a year to two from now after some colleges come knocking. He may as well retire from the pro ranks. He's had three OC positions since his heyday in St. Louis and in each case he was fired after a short stint. Three strikes and your out.
His reputation as an offensive genius always precedes him and I believe there's a certain degree of truth to that. Probably few guys know as much about offensive football as he does. His downfall is his dependence on a decade old system that doesn't work well any longer and a stubborn refusal to adapt to the players he has. Add to that the complete failures of every guy he's brought in as a free agent and he's right. It's time.
I think as much as anything Martz contributed to some very bad personnel decisions made by Jerry Angelo which may well have been some of the reasons he lost his job. Martz's retirement is just a way for him to save face. What team would even hire him after the debacle here after Cutler went down. He's done in the NFL anyway.

I'll bet you within a year he'll be coaching at some college either as an OC or a HC.

I bet there is no team, college or pro, that would touch him w/how bassackwards his offense is. I think he retired when he saw no interest coming from even the college ranks.

Could be but maybe some college that runs a pass happy spread offense will look at him. You have to wonder who stirred up the rumors about an interest from ASU and UCLA. Maybe it was the Martz camp itself.

I was thinking that Martz was as good as retired anyway with the way he was railroaded off of the Bears' coaching staff. I'm glad that he's gone. His arrogance is ridiculous and should be the source of great ridicule for years to come.

Maybe we can arrange it so no one even mentions his name like we've done with Terry ****, LOL.
