    Phil Emery the Front Runner

    Sean Jensen @skjensen 2h

S-T Blog: #Bears next GM expected to be one of the 5 interviewed. Two league sources believe Phil Emery is favorite. bit.ly/wcuFvW

    Michael C. Wright @mikecwright 2h

@ErikGrogan Nope. Dir of football operations for another team told me he'd hire Emery over every1 else for whatever that's worth.

I trust Wright and I think that Emery is a nice pick up, not as sexy as Marc Ross but probably a safer decision.

I'm somehow underwhelmed. We have a chance to pick up a Super Bowl winning executive (Ross) or a guy who has helped pick so many Pro Bowlers that it's sick (Raye), and we're going to take Emery? What's he done other than build a one year wonder in Kansas City?

I would take either Jimmy Raye or Marc Ross in a heartbeat. They're the two best at what they do out on the market. I hope Lovie isn't having too much input into this and is thus planning on using Emery as a "Lovie Buddy."

I have gone back and forth on Phil Emery for a couple of days and I am starting to like a couple of things about him.

    1. He is not Tim Ruskell.

    2. He has the most experience of any of the candidates and that makes me feel a little better because of the PROVEN track record in the league.

    3. He has worked with a number of teams and in that time has been involved with many people in the league and has seen a number of management styles and drafting philosophies.

    4. He has been described as one of the hardest working scouts in the business and a grinder that is well respected amongst the league.

    5. He has been involved in a number of very solid drafts,

    Kansas City Chiefs: Phil Emery

I know that he is not most people's 1st choice and he is not young and flashy like Marc Ross. I think that he is a solid upgrade over Jerry Angelo and a much better option than Tim Ruskell.

That 2011 draft rounds 2-4 is damn near a list of my favorite players from each of those rounds.

I don't know about you guys but I'm at the point where I just want them to hire somebody other than Ruskell. This morning the Trib was trying so hard to make a case for him I began to think they were preparing everyone for the news.

If Emery is their guy so be it. He's not Jerry Angelo and he's not Tim Ruskell although I suppose there is some chance the new guy make keep him on as a Director of Personnel if he's sees the need. Whoever it is needs to get behind his desk and start sorting out how best to make use of that cap money. We've got at least a half dozen of our own guys to resign in addition to the Forte deal and making a free agency shopping list.

The sooner we get someone in there the sooner we can get a feel for him and how he plans to go about things.
I'm getting to that age where a lifetime warranty just doesn't mean as much to me anymore as an afternoon nap.

Here's how former Tribune In the Wake of the News sports columnist Michael Holley described Emery in his book War Room:

"He worked at the Naval Academy for seven years, so he's not a career military man, although he does sound like one: His voice is clear and commanding. … He's got an iPad in front of him with his notes as well as reports from the scouts. His recall is impressive. … You get the feeling the iPad isn't always necessary due to his ability to give historical playbacks from memory."

Emery's body of work also speaks for him.

If the hunches of three league sources are correct, Emery is the leader in the clubhouse.

Emery is the Chiefs’ college scouting director, and he served in the same capacity under Ruskell in Atlanta. Before that, Emery worked as an area scout for the Bears from 1998 to 2004.

He’s considered a “grinder,” a college scout who’s on the road constantly, searching for the next wave of NFL stars.

Emery’s appeal, one source said, might be that his profile is similar to Ted Thompson, the respected general manager of the Green Bay Packers. Like Thompson, Emery has a background deeply rooted on the college side, and he’s matter-of-fact and low-key. They’re aggressive in traveling to scout college players.

In addition, because of his familiarity with many of the Bears’ scouts, Emery wouldn’t be overhauling the staff, and he’d be able to quickly transition and get them headed in the direction he sets forth.

The bold and italicized sentence above scares me. He's not willing to overhaul the staff. I don't want people in the front office who had anything to do with either Angelo or Tim Ruskell. Period.
