MOBILE, Ala. -- Chicago Bears special teams coordinator Dave Toub had to know he faced long odds in his bid to land the Miami Dolphins head-coaching job.
It’s difficult for an assistant to get a first interview for a head-coaching job, nail it and be given the job. Look at what happened with Ron Rivera: The Carolina Panthers were the eighth team to put him through the process before he received an opportunity.
The Dolphins eventually tabbed Joe Philbin, the offensive coordinator for the Green Bay Packers, to fill the role, allowing Toub to sign a two-year extension with the Bears last week. But Dolphins general manager Jeff Ireland said he thinks highly of Toub after putting him through the process.
“Obviously, I wasn’t looking for an offensive or a defensive guy. I was looking for a good football coach and Dave Toub exemplifies being a really good coach,” Ireland said. “We kind of had a plan to not only look at good offenses and good defenses, but good coaches that know how to put a unit together and be successful. He’s shown that over the years that his units are always successful.
“John Harbaugh has established a way of doing that and Dave comes off that tree a little bit so we looked at him to see if he was going to be a fit.”
Toub was an assistant under Harbaugh for the Philadelphia Eagles before joining Lovie Smith’s staff in 2004. Harbaugh’s success with the Baltimore Ravens has opened the minds of some when they begin to think about special teams coaches transitioning to head-coaching roles.
“Obviously, (Ravens general manager) Ozzie (Newsome) thought outside the box,” Ireland said. “That was part of my plan, to think a little outside the box with that. I talked to a lot of people and all of his references thought a lot about him. When you look at the people who were referencing him, there were a lot of head coaches that think he is going to be a fine head coach.”
Does Ireland believe with an opportunity down the road Toub could land a head job?
“If you’re asking me, there is no doubt in my mind,” Ireland said. “I think he is a strong, strong candidate to be a head coach in this league.”
