MOBILE, Ala. -- Chicago Bears special teams coordinator Dave Toub had to know he faced long odds in his bid to land the Miami Dolphins head-coaching job.
It’s difficult for an assistant to get a first interview for a head-coaching job, nail it and be given the job. Look at what happened with Ron Rivera: The Carolina Panthers were the eighth team to put him through the process before he received an opportunity.
The Dolphins eventually tabbed Joe Philbin, the offensive coordinator for the Green Bay Packers, to fill the role, allowing Toub to sign a two-year extension with the Bears last week. But Dolphins general manager Jeff Ireland said he thinks highly of Toub after putting him through the process.
“Obviously, I wasn’t looking for an offensive or a defensive guy. I was looking for a good football coach and Dave Toub exemplifies being a really good coach,” Ireland said. “We kind of had a plan to not only look at good offenses and good defenses, but good coaches that know how to put a unit together and be successful. He’s shown that over the years that his units are always successful.
“John Harbaugh has established a way of doing that and Dave comes off that tree a little bit so we looked at him to see if he was going to be a fit.”
Toub was an assistant under Harbaugh for the Philadelphia Eagles before joining Lovie Smith’s staff in 2004. Harbaugh’s success with the Baltimore Ravens has opened the minds of some when they begin to think about special teams coaches transitioning to head-coaching roles.
“Obviously, (Ravens general manager) Ozzie (Newsome) thought outside the box,” Ireland said. “That was part of my plan, to think a little outside the box with that. I talked to a lot of people and all of his references thought a lot about him. When you look at the people who were referencing him, there were a lot of head coaches that think he is going to be a fine head coach.”
Does Ireland believe with an opportunity down the road Toub could land a head job?
“If you’re asking me, there is no doubt in my mind,” Ireland said. “I think he is a strong, strong candidate to be a head coach in this league.”

Let's face it, some day Dave Toub will get his chance to become a HC in the NFL. He's just too good a coach to be overlooked for long and the comments by Jeff Ireland confirm that. It may take a few more years but from now on he's likely to make a few "short lists".
I think what I hope for is that if Lovie Smith can't get this team turned around next year and the new GM feels that a change is needed that Dave Toub will get consideration for the Bears HC position. One major and noticeable difference between he and Lovie as coaches is that where Lovie and his staff has sometime struggled to develop players at certain positions and have problems staying competitive without the needed talent Dave Toub always keeps his unit ranking near the top no matter how much turnover he has annually.
As an example, this year he lost a productive KR in Danieal Manning, Johnny Knox went down with a serious injury and was unable to share KR duties with a hobbled Devin Hester yet our return teams still rated in the top five. He lost guys like Sam Hurd, Brian Iwuh, and a couple of others from coverage teams yet was able to coach guys like Dom DeCicco up well enough to replace them. The star of our ST, Corey Graham, finally got the recognition he deserves a year ago when he was selected to the Pro-Bowl. Here's a guy who couldn't be coached up to start at any defensive backfield position yet Dave Toub makes him a ST super star. That should tell us all something.
Of all the Bears coaches Dave Toub is the one I would hate most to lose because I have a feeling that if was coaching an opponent he could out coach Lovie and his team would win. If Lovie fails I would really like to see him given the opportunity to coach the Bears as there HC.

I don't doubt for one minute that Toub will get a chance to be a head coach in this league. My only question is whether the Bears will want to keep him on as a member of the old regime, should Lovie fail to turn this team back into a winner by next season. The new GM is going to be itching to get his guys into place as soon as he gets the opportunity to do so.

I don't think he'll replace Lovie after this season if he's got the team back in the playoffs and competing for a championship again. It would be pretty difficult to fire any coach who had a record got enough to earn a spot.
The problem comes more from if he does, what then? Typically HC's don't go into the last year of their contracts without an extension. That's where the rubber meets the road. Does he extend him beyond 2013 or not.

You misread my comment, soul. Maybe I didn't articulate well. I said that if Lovie fails, the new GM is going to be itching to get his men in there, and because of that, I don't think that he'll consider Dave Toub for the position as head coach. Of course, I could be wrong.

I was just going to say that Dags. The new GM here would be doubtful to pick Toub. If he can find the right situation, Toub can flourish.

And, I mean, Toub is better at his job as a ST coach than Lovie is at being a head coach. The Bears have never consistently finished among the league's top twelve every year except for three times in eight seasons under Lovie. Toub's ST units consistently finishes at the top of the league every year, part in parcel because he has studs like Hester, Knox, and Gould, but also because he knows how to get the most out of the talent he has. You can argue that Lovie gets the most out of the talent he has, but then you get hit with an epiphany that tells you, "He didn't win all the big ones. He has as losing record now to the Packers (8-9 between 2004 and 2011, including the 2010 NFC Championship Game). He didn't win the Super Bowl when he got there." I know we hold George Halas and Mike Ditka to almost Mount Rushmore levels, but damn, Lovie needs to win a championship to validate himself. He's done about everything else but that. I personally think Toub has the potential to win a Super Bowl because he is meticulous at detailing what he does for a living. The jury is still out on Lovie Smith. We'll see this next year when he gets some more toys to work with whether he's the right man for the job.

If by chance Lovie does get the axe any Bears GM would be a fool not to consider Dave Toub. It's not all that uncommon for coaches from the former staff to get consideration for a new HC position with the same team. How about when the interim coach, after a mid-season firing, becomes the HC the following season.
I understand the desire on the part of a GM to have "his guy" as HC but there's nothing to say that Toub couldn't be that guy and a lot that says he could. He has the qualifications to be an Oline coach as well and he obviously has the skills of a coordinator. John Harbaugh, whom Tice worked under, was a ST coach and he's become one hell of a HC. Hell, Ditka was a ST coach in Dallas too before Halas hired him to coach the Bears.

Anyone with ears and eyes knows Toub is an extremely well-tooled coach. Other than Tice, there's not a more competent sounding individual in interviews in the entire organization. Obviously, I never hope for Lovie's failure, because his failure means the teams failure. However, if Lovie's days do end sooner rather than later, I should certainly hope Toub is on our short list for interviews. I'm not well-versed in historical hirings of current staffers succeeding head coaches other than Jason Garrett, but I would have nothing but confidence in a guy like Toub leading our team. I selfishly hope he keeps carrying the stigma of ST coordinator so teams keep him on their secondary lists, but I also know a guy like him can only be held back for so long.
