    Bears Mock Offseason Jan 25th

I am assuming that Phil Emery will be hired as GM.

This draft looks to do 2 things,

    1. Draft an impact player on offense either at WR or OL and then fill out the WR core with developmental guys.

    2. Draft youth and speed at all 3 levels of the defense.

1[19] OT Mike Adams [Ohio St] 6’7” 323lbs.

The Bears will go as far as Jay Cutler takes them and right now he has not finished a 2nd straight season. The Bears have a young and improving line and as much potential as J’Marcus Webb has he is still too big of a liability to be starting at LT. Adams is physically imposing, a premiere athlete and has experience going against the best competition. He is standing out at the Senior Bowl and may not be available when the Bears pick.

    2[51] DE Vinny Curry [Marshall] 6’3” 256lbs.

The Bears need pass rush opposite of the Julius Peppers and while Idonije is good against the run and a team leader they need more speed. Curry is a solid athlete that has a relentless motor when getting to the QB. He has polished pass rush moves and could provide pass rush immediately while working his way into a starting role.

    3[73] WR Marvin McNutt [Iowa] 6’3” 216lbs.

I expect the Bears to bring in a veteran WR because of the volatility of rookies at the position. McNutt is showing at the Senior Bowl that he can make tough catches and that he has the physical ability to be an NFL WR. I expect that a pedestrian 40 time will keep him out of the 2nd round, but he can contribute right away for the Bears as a big possession WR.

    3[83] LB Travis Lewis [OU] 6’1” 235lbs.

The Bears need to begin the process of making over their LB core and they do so with Lewis who has the speed and nose for the ball to eventually replace Lance Briggs. Lewis was a tackling machine in college and should contribute immediately on special teams.

    4. CB Robert Blanton [Notre Dame] 6’1” 205lbs.

The value on Cover 2 CBs simply does not exist in early rounds and the Bears begin looking at the position in the 4th round. I expect the Bears to sign a veteran player to replace Tim Jennings and add Blanton who has the size and tackling ability to develop into starter down the road.

    5. LB Mychal Kendricks [Cal] 6’1” 240lbs.

The Bears LB core gets another shot of youth with Kendricks who can begin working in the middle of the defense and learning from Urlacher. A solid tackler and athlete that has a ton of experience in coverage having played in the Pac 12.

    6. WR Greg Childs [Arkansas] 6’3” 217lbs.

Childs has all the physical ability to be a #1 WR in the NFL and flashed that ability while at Arkansas. The problem is that he has had some off field issues and focus problems. This is a boom or bust pick that could work out in a huge way for the Bears.

    7. C Nathan Richman [Boston College] 6’5” 295lbs.

A developmental C with the size and brains that Tice wants on the OL. He will probably spend the year on the practice roster, but with Garza’s age and Spencer playing well at RG the Bears should develop someone for the future.

I've heard some mixed reviews on Mike Adams. My best friend is a huge Ohio State football fan, so he knows his stuff about Buckeye football players. His words were that he was compared to Orlando Pace when he was recruited because he had the same speed and agility, but was a lot like Alex Boone in that he is very overrated. He said he needs some coaching up, and that if he were to guess where he would be picked, he'd go around the 2nd or 3rd Round.

There are few who don't need some coaching and time to adapt to the speed and strength of NFL pass rushers but I'd bet my left nut Mike Adams never makes it past round one. He's the size of Webb, plays with an attitude and has spent his college career playing against far better competition than Webb ever did. He isn't likely to be any worse than Webb and somewhere either in the draft or free agency we need another LT.

I could see Adams as a possibility, I could also see them lusting after Coples if he lasts that long or possibly Ingram or even Martin if he falls that far. We should have a shot at a very good player where were at and we have an extra 3rd to use if we need to move up a few picks to assure we get "the guy".
I'm getting to that age where a lifetime warranty just doesn't mean as much to me anymore as an afternoon nap.

I agree with that assertion for the most part. Unless draft projections were originally off, Adams was initially projected for early 2nd Round (38th pick in the Mock Draft I saw). I wish I knew more good Mock Draft guides to go by because I really only know of Walter Football and I would like to gain more insight into the drafts from different perspectives.

Coples, from what I've read again, is picked to go in the top ten in the first round, so much like Reiff and possibly Martin, he will be out of our reach unless we're willing to give up the farm to get him. If Adams is as good as you think he is going to be, I want him in the first round. According to you source, he is potentially a top twenty pick. That interests me, and I'm leaning more on your judgment since my friend doesn't know much about OL techniques. (I don't, either.)

What does the fact that our only truly worthwhile CB in the C2 system was picked 35th overall say about this "fact?"

Here is the latest draft projection for the Bears according to Walter Football.com:

Chicago Bears: Mike Adams, OT, Ohio State
Some Chicago fans may not like the idea of spending back-to-back first-round selections on offensive tackles, but that's exactly what the Packers did with Bryan Bulaga and Derek Sherrod. Ted Thompson knew that he had to protect Aaron Rodgers at all cost, and that's exactly what the Bears must do with Jay Cutler. Chicago could have made it to the Super Bowl had Cutler not gotten injured; the team was a solid 7-3 before he went down.

Mike Adams is turning some heads at the Senior Bowl - get extensive 2012 Senior Bowl Coverage by clicking the link - and there have been reports that some teams like him as a potential top-15 selection.
