There are times when life is very good - recently, we had three teams (2005, 2006, and 2010) that made fans happy. But by the same token, they were inherently flawed in one way or another: either the quarterback was terrible (Rex Grossman), the offensive line would get blown off the line of scrimmage, bad wide receivers, or a mad scientist of an offensive coordinator who defied common convention and went against everything that his superiors told him to do.

I'm not going to say just yet that Emery is going to be a terrible GM. But I will say that I'm not totally confident that we won't have a hangover from the Jerry Angelo years in his form because of Emery's past association with Angelo. That's what makes me so uncomfortable with the potential for his hiring than anything else.
I can't pin everything on JA, if the Bears had won a Superbowl or even been fairly competitive since their last one in 1985-86 then I would say other wise. Actually the JA tenure has been more successful since their Superbowl win than in previous years. I still say it stems from the very top down and their philosophy of having a sound defense and running the ball which is why they pay more attention to the defensive side of the ball and at the RB position more so than they have at O-Line, W.R. and Q.B.

There is a reason why GB has enjoyed having only 2 quality QB's in the span the Bears have had 13-14 and had success because they know on offense you find a quality QB and build around him. The Bears have now had Cutler the last 3 seasons and have failed in building around him and soon will be on their 3rd O-coordinator as well, this is what the McCaskeys and Phillips has failed to recognize IMO due to their defensive minded mentality and Philosophy, there's a reason why Chicago is the place where W.R.'s go to die. At one time the belief was defense wins you championships and true at one point in time but times have changed, the rules have changed and now it takes a good balance. Of course this is all just MOP after being a fan for 0ver 35+ years and everyone will have their own opinions at this point all we can do is set back watch it all unfold and hope for the best.

Great observations and very well put. Whether it's been a personnel issue (Angelo's domain) or a problem with player development and coaching (Lovies domain) it clearly hasn't worked as intended.

So by process of elimination they deal with this. First the personnel guy gets replaced with a mandate to get the team the remaining talent it needs to compete for a championship. If he's successful with this and the team still falls flat on it's ass then it becomes a coaching issue and we say good-bye to Lovie and company too.

Short of tearing it all down and starting over from scratch I don't how else you could approach it.
I'm getting to that age where a lifetime warranty just doesn't mean as much to me anymore as an afternoon nap.

*sigh* this is what happens when you half-ass something. Instead of firing JA and hiring a solid replacement and letting the GM make personnel decisions, we now find our selves trying to fill out the positions with whatever is left while we frantically search for our GM. This whole thing is getting ridiculous. Its becoming more and more obvious that they fired JA and Martz simply for fan service, not because they are interested in properly fixing the issues with the team.

Next up for Bears QB coach hunt: Plan B

The Bears continue their search for a passing game coordinator/quarterbacks coach. (Chris Sweda/Tribune photo)

By Brad Biggs, Tribune reporter 9:00 a.m. CST, January 27, 2012

MOBILE, Ala. — When the Chicago Bears resume their quest to find a passing game coordinator/quarterbacks coach next week, they’ll do so by moving to Plan B.

The Bears offered the job to Greg Olson, the only man to interview for the job, but he turned it down before becoming the quarterbacks coach of the Jacksonville Jaguars, a source told the Tribune.

No, Olson didn’t pick Blaine Gabbert over Jay Cutler straight up. The Jaguars gave Olson the title of assistant head coach and their contract offer was for three years, one more than the Bears put on the table. Olson worked for the Bears in 2003 as a quarterbacks coach on Dick Jauron’s staff and took over John Shoop’s play-calling responsibilities before the season ended. Since, he’s been a coordinator in Detroit, St. Louis and Tampa Bay.

While Mike Martz used the quarterbacks coach role to have someone on staff that was proficient with computers, the Bears are seeking a more experienced assistant. They are looking for someone well versed in passing schemes as the position will assist new offensive coordinator Mike Tice, whose background is obviously rooted in running the football.

What candidates emerge in the coming week remains to be seen. The team sought to interview Tennessee Titans quarterbacks coach Dowell Loggains but that attempt was denied. Tice has obvious ties to Dirk Koetter but he transitioned from an offensive coordinator job in Jacksonville to become the play caller for the Atlanta Falcons. Olson is the only known candidate to meet with the Bears and he declined them.

Nothing pisses me off more than seeing this headline. Their entire approach to this hire has been a first class cluster fuck. Every guy on their list has turned them down, Jeremy Bates isn't even on the list, and they screwed up the way they handled the approach to hiring Loggains who was their first choice.

Let's forget about the odd structure of the role for just a moment and focus on their hiring strategy. In the beginning there were two guys Jay Cutler had worked with before and had success with each. For whatever reason Jeremy Bates, who isn't coaching elsewhere and who would have been available, was dismissed as a candidate immediately. If that was because he turned them down last time around then it was very short sighted on the Bears part since Olson, who the Bears had not wanted two years ago, told then to take a hike when they came calling this time.

The other candidate was Dowell Loggains who reportedly did want the job if he could get out of his deal with the Titans. The same Titans we refused to let interview Mike Tice last year. The Titans won't let Loggains out of his deal and he can't leave for a lateral position so why didn't the Bears slap and Asst. OC title on the hire to go along with QB Coach/Passing Coordinator so that it was perceived to be a promotion? So they screwed this up too.

They're looking for a first class guy to come in to do half the job. He gets to design the passing offense but he doesn't get to call the plays for it. Maybe it would have been better to have left that part open or shared with the QB guy in the booth sending the plays down to Tice on the sideline who either changes it or sends it in. Then of course there was the mystery of whether Tice was even staying around to be the OC for 2012.

It seems to me that they couldn't have made this any harder it they actually tried to.

I would absolutely laugh my ass off if the Bears never found anyone to take the position. It would serve them right for fucking over in one form or another half of those people involved in the search.
