The List of Candidates for QB Coach/Passing Game Coordinator is Thinning..
Van Pelt may be last man standing for Bears
With other QB coaching candidates dropping by wayside, he gets plaudits from former boss

MOBILE, Ala. — When the Bears initiated their search for a quarterbacks coach/passing game coordinator to pair with Mike Tice, former Buccaneers quarterbacks coach Alex Van Pelt was on the list.
As the search continues, fired Bucs head coach Raheem Morris sees no reason why the 41-year-old Van Pelt shouldn't be near the top of that list.
"I think the world of Alex,'' Morris said from the Senior Bowl, where he is scouting as the Redskins' defensive backs coach. "As far as being a football mind and being smart and sharp … a guy who can come in with a detailed plan and dynamic ideas to find a way to score, Alex is definitely one of those guys.''
The Bears might want to keep Van Pelt's number handy considering how matters have unfolded thus far.
Tice, now the team's offensive coordinator, wanted to bring in Dirk Koetter, with whom he coached for the Jaguars. But Koetter was named the Falcons' offensive coordinator.
The Bears remain high on University of Miami offensive coordinator Jedd Fisch, the former Broncos receivers coach when quarterback Jay Cutler played there. But several coaches familiar with Fisch said the duties of the position aren't exactly appealing to him with Tice set to call the plays. Also, Fisch apparently doesn't want to uproot his family.
Another top candidate, Colts offensive coordinator Clyde Christensen, remains in limbo as the team named Chuck Pagano as coach Tuesday. The Bears already were denied permission to interview Titans quarterbacks coach Dowell Loggains and former Seahawks offensive coordinator Jeremy Bates has been eliminated from consideration.
The only candidate the Bears interviewed so far — at least publicly — is former Bucs offensive coordinator Greg Olson, who accepted the quarterbacks coach job for the Jaguars last week.
Morris, who was fired along with his entire staff after a 4-12 campaign, said the combination of Olson and Van Pelt was a bright spot.
"The second year, we got a chance to bring Alex in and he was really able to work with (Josh) Freeman in the offseason,'' Morris said. "And I had that tag team between him and Greg Olson. They were phenomenal together. That's really why we had the good record (10-6 in 2010), with those two working together.''
Maybe Van Pelt can establish the same chemistry with Tice, if the opportunity presents itself.

This one thing that I'm extremely frustrated with. It seems to be that no one wants to be an offensive coach for the Bears under Lovie Smith. I'm quite certain that had Mike Tice not been promoted to OC we would still be hunting for an OC right now.
Part of this I lay at the feet of Mike Tice. If he had been interviewing prospective guys for both that QB/Passing Game Coach and Oline Coach positions instead of being lured into accepting an interview (which never came) for the Oakland HC job maybe one of his top choices would already be on board. Instead one by one they've all taken jobs elsewhere and for whatever reason Jeremy Bates isn't even under consideration.
Now that Tice is sticking around it's really time to get serious about filling those coaching positions before all of the better prospects are gone. Maybe the reason why Darryl Drake is still the Bears WR coach is because no one else will take the job. At one time Todd Haley was here but sure didn't stick around long. Who wants to be the WR coach for a team whose been labeled "where wide receivers come to die".
There's been talk about "changing the culture" of the Bears organization. Well not only does that need to change in the way the front office is run but also on the way the team operates as far it's offensive philosophy is concerned. What young WR wants to see his career stalled out and stats dashed on the rocks in an offense that won't use him to his best potential.
Tice has already said that we don't have any receivers on the team who can get open and catch the ball 90% of the time. He's right and that needs to change but it won't change until he gets someone out there who can develop a good rapport with Cutler and gain his trust. I really hope this is the last off-season we have to have this discussion.

I blame Phillips and Lovie on this, Lovie is in charge of hiring his coaching staff. I agree with the culture assessment but don't see it as long as Lovie remains the coach and I think the Martz only helped reinforce Lovie's beliefs and culture as far as Bear football, playing tough defense, running the ball and a conservative passing game. One of Lovie's major flaws IMO is to conservative, when they've had the lead he plays not to lose rather than play to win. Like the Denver game, yes Barber goofed big time but Lovie went into that prevent BS way to early as he always does. I hope Tice does what he says he plans on doing and why this passing game coordinator/Q.B. coach is vital IMO. Lovie and Tice should be all over this I get the impression Tice is better suited at run plays and will rely heavily on this new hire for the pass plays.
The only reason I can think of for Bates not being considered is that he turned them down last time and went with Carroll to Seattle, not sure exactly where that comes from be it Cutler, Lovie or higher up but that's the only reason I can see for the Bears not considering Bates.

who the hell wants to be half a OC for a possible lame duck coach? Hell the last time we were in this spot we couldnt get a real OC and had to settle on Martz.

And here's the latest on the QB Coach front.
Bears' job could be tough sell for Miami's Fisch

MOBILE, Ala. -- It might be difficult for the Chicago Bears to lure Jedd Fisch to Chicago from South Beach, and it has nothing to do with the weather.
Fisch, now the offensive coordinator at the University of Miami, is high on the Bears' wish list for quarterbacks coach/passing game coordinator. But several coaches familiar with Fisch said the 36-year-old has no desire to leave Miami at this time.
Part of Fisch's reservations, according to the coaches, has to do with the title of "passing game coordinator" and the duties that come with it. New offensive coordinator Mike Tice will call the plays in a revamped offense expected to be more run-oriented.
One source said Fisch also might not want to uproot his family after his wife gave birth to their second daughter two years ago.
That's not to say the Bears won't make a run at Fisch after his recruiting season ends Feb.1. Fisch did not respond to multiple messages left by the Tribune.
Fisch was the receivers coach in Denver when Jay Cutler played there, and the Bears would like to hire someone Cutler would be comfortable working alongside. Fisch interviewed to be the Bears' quarterbacks coach in 2007, but Pep Hamilton got the job.
The Bears interviewed former Tampa Bay offensive coordinator Greg Olson for their opening, but Olson was named the quarterbacks coach in Jacksonville. Tice wanted to add former Jaguars offensive coordinator Dirk Koetter but Koetter was hired for the same position in Atlanta, And Titans quarterbacks coach/passing game coordinator Dowell Loggains had a strong desire to come work with Cutler until Tennessee denied the Bears' permission to interview him.
The Bears continue to monitor the status of Colts offensive coordinator Clyde Christensen, who could remain in Indianapolis, depending on the wishes of newly named head coach Chuck Pagano. Christensen and Lovie Smith were on the same Buccaneers' staff.
Ex-Seahawks offensive coordinator Jeremy Bates, Cutler's quarterbacks coach in Denver, will not be considered for the position.

Lovie says, "well Jed, you weren't good enough for us two years ago but you are now. And Jed says, "tell Lovie I said Fuck Him".
We go through QB coaches about as fast as we go through Safeties. Anybody else but me get the feeling if given half a chance the Bears could fuck up a one car parade?

What the Miami guy says about his title is exactly the horse shit I'm talking about. Who the hell in the league needs two ocs? Only this retarded ass organization promotes an oc who can't handle oc duties on his own

I think it might be more helpful if Tice wasn't so adamant about being the play caller mo. I thought that was gonna be a problem when he first announced that. It think the passing game requires a lot more work than the running game so who wants the work that goes into coordinating it without the knowledge of how of even if it will be used the way it's designed to work.
I think if they would have put an Asst. OC title on the job and let the guy sit in booth and call down plays to Tice and he relays them in or adjusts the call they may have been able to pry Loggains loose from Tennessee. The play caller should be up in the booth like Martz was but with all of Tice's responsibilities, in my opinion, it would be better if he was down on the field.

At this point guys, only time will tell if what they are doing works. All we have to do is just wait see what they do on the field. If they suck, oh well. It's nothing new to us. Just have to keep hoping there will be some change for the better down the road.
