I like the combination of Spaeth and Davis and don't see the TE position as a need right now and see other positions as a must address before the TE especially if he can be signed reasonable JMO.

I don't think he'll even cost that much mo. I'd think closer to $1 mil per year with maybe a small bonus thrown in as an incentive to sign.

I'd prefer not to use an early pick on a position we just traded a pretty darn good one for a third. I sincerely doubt any of the properly valued guys are going to be able to make the impact in either aspect of the game that Kellen did in this season of one-dimensional use. Tell me TE is one of our pressing needs deserving of a top half pick, and I'll sell you a treasure map to Curly's gold.
Could I get it at a better price if I tell you we don't?

Exactly. We already have a foolish amount tied up in Spaeth who'll be of less use now that Martz is gone. We've also got Andre Smith and Kyle Adams and all we know about those two so far is that Smith is a monster blocker and Adams can play ST. There are enough warm bodies to make it through the year.

The question is, though: can Smith receive as well as Kellen Davis? If he can, Davis is expendable because he would be the more expensive option despite being a lesser product.

I don't know about that, but I do know he is the best blocker coming out of college that I've seen since Craig Stevens who just signed a 4-year $15M deal, so I see definite value there.

Sox hit's the nail on the head here Dags. Smith was an absolute monster blocker during the preseason. If they hadn't prematurely invested in Spaeth then Smith would have made the active roster.
Right now I see him primarily as competing with Spaeth as an inline blocker but if the this kid can run and catch anywhere near as well as he blocks you'll never hear the words Kellen Davis or Greg Olsen ever mentioned around here again. Smith would rank right up there with Jay Higenberg as one of the best UDFA's we ever signed.

to re-signing Davis. He has the potential to be a good pass catcher and he should come pretty cheap. IMHO he hasn't been productive enough so far to attract much attention on the open market so I think he'll be anxious to remain a Bear.
Why? He'll be playing for an OC who does like to throw to his TE and with a very good passing QB who wants and needs big targets to throw to. Cutler has also shown a tendency to use his TE's very effectively on seam routes and as outlet receivers when the downfield others are covered. Davis could easily be a 40-50 catch guy in Tice's offense and his ratio of TD's to catches is incredible.
The Bears should be able to offer him a two year deal with little or no guaranteed money and keep him around long enough to see if he develops into a solid TE.
THUMBS UP--I agree completely. KDavis should be inexpensive to re-sign and he has been held back by Martz's idiocy. With an former TE as OC in Tice, he should see many more opportunities...he's got potential to be a good all around player and his size makes him a tough cover/tough tackle. No brainer to keep him. We don't have the luxury of drafting a TE in the early/mid rounds anyway.

Thanks for clarifying that. I will be interesting in seeing whether Tice will instruct the quarterback at whatever juncture of the preseason's games to throw to Andre Smith.
Andre Smith. Boy, that sounds like a major football player's name!

If it were up to me, I cut Spaeth and go with Davis-Adams-Smith. Spaeth was a good pass blocker, but there is little to nothing else of his game worthwhile. Hell, it was Spaeth's failed block that directly led to Forte's knee injury. Adams is a pretty flexy guy who grew on me with his route running, and Smith has the ability to dominate whatever side of the field he is blocking on.
