See I look at the safe choise as being Ruskell, then next year if it fails clearing how and going a different direction. But that's JMO. I just look at it as thank god it's not another year of JA or even worse his heir apparent Ruskell. And until he really flops a couple drafts/FA's I'm willing to give him the benefit of the doubt.

Idk about ja deuce but he is a good ole boy and time will tell if the move works. I'm interested in seeing if they modernize this team to catch up with the better teams in the nfl. We are just fans and these teams are just billionaire play toys or tommy boys cash cow. But if I see same old shit going on that's when I will be dissapointed like I've been in the past

Good news hopefully is new bears year and a new vision that is much needed

Well the team will still draft under the vision of what the coach wants, which is dominant D, run the ball, hit the big pass to keep teams honest. It's not how they draft, it's who they draft and when. Do they get playmakers in the early rounds, or do they continue to bust out b/c of poor choises? That will be the big question.

The BEARS took the safe route. No big shakeup. Go with the good college scout, so they hit the picks and DONT HAVE TO SPEND on FA's. With the rookie cap now in place it will SAVE THE BEARS MONEY. It will be the same hit or miss team we have seen for a long time now. Thats my take.

From the very first time that we saw the short list what stuck out like a sore thumb was his past history with the organization. Hiring guys like that is the Bears way and it goes all the way back into the far reaches of the Halas era when the old man hired some of his former players as coaches, 40's=Johnsos/Anderson, 50's=Luckman, 60's=Dooley, 70's=Gibron all the way up to Ditka in the 80's.

The Bears will never be on the cutting edge of anything as long as the control rests with the McCaskey Family. There's always gonna be the right way, the wrong way and the Bears way. David Haugh's article which called their GM search "curious" was right on target IMO. That's exactly what the Bears are, curious. Like Churchill said about Soviet Russia, "a riddle wrapped in an enigma". The Bears are curious and enigmatic and like the Cold War Russians eminently predictable.

I'm not unhappy. We made a long overdue change and now it's time to see what Emery is made of. His first moves will tell us a lot so let's see how this whole thing unfolds over the next month. He' got FA to prepare for in March and decisions to be made over a handful of our own before then and then the draft a month later. I think we need to see where we stand in the ranks of major personnel problems solved before we're too hasty in judging him. JMO.
Let's just hope that he doesn't aim to overhaul the entire team's personnel. There is still plenty of gas in the tank that with boosting the octane a bit will make it a well-oiled machine. I didn't think of this until now, but surely he won't seek a complete rebuild.

Ugh, that is the problem right there...that attitude that the Bears FO has. Its the apple cart that was the problem, its SUPPOSED to be upset, thats the whole point in finding a new GM. The apples themselves (the players) are, for the most part...just fine. We need a new cart, not to simply tweak the old one.

But it is what it is. Just like Tice and Lovie...Emery has a one year window to make something happen. If the stars align and this is indeed a good move, then theres no reason why we cant reach the SB next year. Hell, we were one game shy of that goal last year, and that was WITH JA and Martz. So there is ZERO excuse for not reaching it next year. There is not going to be a "getting settled in" period where mistakes are going to be brushed off and the attitude becomes "wait til next year." Next year is already here...its put up or shut up time.

Yep, so far we heard a lot of talkin' the talk so now it's time to walk the walk. To me any sign that too much of the old S.N.A.F.U. way of doing things is still in place and I'm sure you and I won't be the only unhappy camper mo. There's a lot that needs doing between now and July to get this team back on track and we should have a pretty good idea then how well Emery has done at fixing the leaks in his boat.

I also say it's Super Bowl or bust. This team has the talent to win, and if Emery doesn't decide to dismantle everything and rebuild it in his image, we are in good shape. The NFC North next season will be the strongest in the NFC; only the NFC South will give it a serious challenge within the conference. I don't care how good Green Bay and Detroit are, it's time to put up or shut up and go out and win a championship. Lovie Smith has had some successes; now it's time for him to go out and validate his career's achievements by winning a Super Bowl. He's got the defense, the makeup of a good offense if we get a couple of tools to right the ship, and the best ST unit in the league. If we don't at least compete for a Super Bowl next season, I will lay that at the feet of Lovie Smith and Phil Emery as having not done enough to make the dream, the vision, come true.

And I think that's a good take on it yttocs. Angelo's forays into free agency haven't exactly been a raging success. Peppers has been a huge but very expensive success brought about by Angelo's misses with guys like Haynes and Bazuin. Other than that he spent a lot of money and got little or nothing in return from guys like Manu, Taylor, Meriweather, Omiyale, ad nauseum.

You're 100% correct about the path to building a consistent winner being through the draft and his track record was inconsistent at best. The core of this team, of any team, has to be built through drafting well. Free agency is where you go to fill immediate needs when you can't wait for the development of a rookie draft pick. I think what you focus on his top quality as opposed to mediocre quantity and with the exception of Peppers JA never seemed to get that right.

Here's hoping that Emery can correctly identify the one or two guy we need and can, within reason, get without blowing the cap all out of whack. The thought that we're not that far away from a championship is part true and part false. Without a couple more key playmakers it won't happen. If we don't get those guys we may compete but we won't be able to overcome the best and anything that ends up without an honest shot at the Super Bowl isn't enough. That's the way I look at it.
