• Bears pick Emery as new GM ... you like the selection?

Experience: Phil Emery has spent 31 years in football, 14 in the NFL. He most recently was the Chiefs' director of college scouting. Previously, he was the Falcons' director of college scouting. Before working in the NFL, Emery primarily was the strength coach at several universities.

Familiar face: This is Emery's second go-round at Halas Hall, having worked as a regional scout for the Bears from 1998-2004.

Scouting style: Emery learned the Patriots way while working under Bill Belichick disciples Thomas Dimitroff with the Falcons and Scott Pioli with the Chiefs. He likely will institute that system.

Draft picks: Among the players Emery's teams have drafted have been Brian Urlacher, Charles Tillman, Lance Briggs, Roddy White, Matt Ryan and Eric Berry.

Roots: Emery is a Michigan native with a bachelor's degree in physical education from Wayne State University in Detroit.

Personal: Emery, 53, and his wife, Beth, have one daughter, April.

Emery sounds like an All-American kind of guy. Now let's see if he can make Briggs shut up or if he can trade him for some draft picks.
