Would really like to know why they chose him over Licht.
It really is a crapshoot with these guys and though I really don't care much about the whole "military man" presence, I guess he's well-respected and that has to count for something. I don't like the fact that he has ties to the old regime and the people upstairs (including Ruskell), but I'm good with this.
We will get a more clear idea of how he is by how he handles this offseason. Some important choices to be made.
Comfort. He was the safe choice. He was the predictable choice. He was the guy who could come in fix somethings without upsetting the apple cart. I think we've known all along that the Bears weren't gonna step outside of their typical way of doing things even when hiring a new GM. Unlike some other organizations the Bears GM is more of a gloirfied personnel guy than the actual head of all football operations as someone like Mike Holmgren is.
Licht would have been a step away from the tried and true as Ted Phillips and the McCaskey Family saw it. Emery is "old school" and Licht "noveau" and despite the shake up the Bears are still the Bears. This comes as no great shock to me.
Well I'm glad we finally have someone. Hopefully he gets to work soon and gets us our much needed free agents.
I'm not wearing any clothes.
Five will get you ten that Ruskell stays on throughout this year and finishes out his contract as Personnel Director. Someone with a football background has to around to take care of the handoff and without Ruskell there's no one. Sure as hell Ted Phillips and George McCaskey can't do it.
To me keeping Ruskell on for now isn't the negative some see it as. We had a pretty fair draft last year with him in the room and if Spencer was his recommendation then it turned out to be a good one. At least this way Emery can focus on the draft and have Ruskell working on the free agent selection prior to the draft. We're getting a late start compared to others.
