I think Tice is a much better fit (if it proves out that he is a good strategist). So, in my mind, the Bears will finally have a staff and system that is all on the same page. Whether it works or not, that remains to be seen but I have a great deal of hope that it might.
That hire left a lot of us scratching our heads. I thought Martz would temper his game a bit coaching in Chicago. I was wrong and I'm glad we sent him packing.

Bears' Smith to talk with Alex Van Pelt about QBs coach/passing game coordinator job

General manager Phil Emery might not be the only former member of the Chiefs to join the Bears this off season.
Alex Van Pelt, who started his 11-year playing career as a quarterback with the Chiefs, is scheduled to meet with Lovie Smith on Tuesday for the position of quarterbacks coach/passing game coordinator, according to an NFL source. Van Pelt was the Buccaneers quarterbacks coach the past two seasons but was let go along with the entire coaching staff following a 4-12 campaign.
It is unclear where the meeting will take place although Van Pelt has remained in the Tampa, Fla., area while Smith is supposed to be vacationing there now. Smith was not at Halas Hall for Emery’s introductory news conference Monday afternoon.
Former Buccaneers coach Raheem Morris credited Van Pelt for aiding the development of quarterback Josh Freeman. Alfredo Roberts, who coached the tight ends in Tampa Bay, also praised Van Pelt.
"I have all the faith in the world in Alex,’’ Roberts said Monday. "He has good ideas. He’s a good teacher of young men. And he’s one of those guys if there’s tension in the room, he’ll bring levity.’’
The Buccaneers ranked 21st in the league in total offense this season, averaging 319.2 yards per game, and 16th in passing offense (228.1). Freeman's 74.6 passer rating ranked 25th, but his 95.9 in 2010 ranked sixth.
Van Pelt, 41, was drafted in the eighth round by the Steelers and played 10 seasons in Buffalo (11 starts) and one in Kansas City. His playing experience should give him instant credibility with Jay Cutler, if Van Pelt is hired.
Van Pelt got his coaching start as the quarterbacks coach of the Frankfurt Galaxy (2005). Van Pelt became a volunteer offensive coach for the Bills the same year. After a stop at the University of Buffalo as the quarterbacks coach/passing game coordinator, Van Pelt returned to the Bills and eventually became the offensive coordinator in 2009.
The Bears offered the quarterbacks coach/passing game coordinator position to former Bucs offensive coordinator Greg Olson, whom Van Pelt worked alongside in Tampa. Olson opted to become the Jaguars' quarterbacks coach rather than team with Bears offensive coordinator Mike Tice.
Former Colts offensive coordinator Clyde Christensen was high on Smith’s list from the beginning, but Christensen appears content to remain in Indianapolis as the receivers coach. The Bears also have decided not to pursue University of Miami offensive coordinator Jedd Fisch, who remains committed to the Hurricanes.
Ex-Jacksonville offensive coordinator Dirk Koetter was Tice's first choice for the position but Koetter was named the Falcons' offensive coordinator.

Would appear so. Van Pelt may be a good choice since he worked with Greg Olson but why is we're always done to the 4th or 5th guy on the list before someone says yes to an interview? You'd think guys would be thrilled to come to Chicago for the chance to work with Jay Cutler and build a respectable passing game here. It would be a real feather in their coaching caps. It's like asking 5 girls to the junior prom only to end up with the one with braces and coke bottle glasses who can't dance.

Very interesting. Once again, we are turned down by someone and we are back to square one. Who in the media keeps coming up with these half-baked stories and rumors regarding QB coaches? I hope Van Pelt gets because if he doesn't, we're in for a lot of heartache.

Bears get turned down on another request to interview QB coach. Clearly Alex Van Pelt is not high on the Bears "A List" of prospects for the Bears QB Coach/Passing Coordinator Job. I think Zorn makes the 5th or 6th candidate to have either been refused to the Bears or has elected to go elsewhere.
Chiefs denied Bears request to speak to Jim Zorn

Phil Emery wasn't the only member of the Kansas City Chiefs the Bears were interested in lately. According to a league source, the Bears requested permission to speak to Chiefs quarterbacks coach Jim Zorn about the same position. But, the Chiefs denied that request.
Because the Chiefs season was over, they could not block Emery -- the team's college scouting director -- from interviewing for the Bears' general manager vacancy. But, general manager Scott Pioli talked to the Sun-Times about Emery at the Senior Bowl last week.
Zorn joined the Chiefs last offseason. Although head coach Todd Haley was fired, the Chiefs apparently like Zorn enough that they don't want him to leave.
The Bears are expected to interview Alex Van Pelt for the quarterbacks coach/ passing game coordinator opening soon.
