Could CWill Move Back to LT?............................
Inside the Bears
Could Chris Williams push J'Marcus Webb at left tackle?
By Sean Jensen on January 29, 2012 8:15 AM | No Comments | No TrackBacks
According to Pro Football Focus, J'Marcus Webb was the worst full-time starting left tackle in the NFL this season. Webb had a rating of minus-24.7, which ranked 67th among offensive tackles, according to PFF. By contrast, the top-rated offensive tackle, the Phila-delphia Eagles' Jason Peters, had a rating of 27.6.
Bears offensive line coach-turned-offensive coordinator Mike Tice has defended the play and potential of Webb, a seventh-round pick in the 2010 draft, at every turn.
But here's something to keep an eye on: Perhaps Tice will consider moving Chris Williams back to left tackle to compete with Webb. Williams started nine games at guard before he was lost for the season to a wrist injury. He didn't exactly shine, but he played solid football.
Next season, Webb likely will be penciled in as the starter at left tackle, Gabe Carimi as the starter at right tackle and Roberto Garza as the starter at center. There will plenty of competition for the two guard spots among Chris Spencer, Lance Louis and Edwin Williams. That's why Chris Williams might get a shot at left tackle.
The Bears could use an infusion of talent on the offensive line. For the second consecutive season, their offensive line ranked last in the league, according to STATS. Given their needs at so many other positions, though, they might not be able to invest much more than a late-round pick in the unit.

All speculation but a reasonable speculation given Webb less than standard play. I didn't know Webb rated lowest among NFL OT's but I knew he was nowhere near the top. This will certainly add ammunition to the arguement that we need to use our first round pick to draft an OT again this year.
While that's possible there is also the possibility of finding veteran help in FA or, as Jensen speculates, give CWill another shot at LT. The play of Chris Spencer and Lance Louis was good enough to potentially earn them the OG spots for now and EWill did well as CWill's replacement. Add to that the bodies of Ricky Henry and Levi Horn and we have a bit of a logjam at OG but as usual we're weak at OT. LT to be specific. CWill was picked in the first round to be that LT and last years first round pick was RT Gabe Carimi. Do we really want to spend another first round pick on drafting a LT when we have two on the roster who were drafted as LT's but don't play there?
As Jensen points out, there are other needs but if the Bears expect to get LT help in the draft it's not gonna come from a late round pick. Isn't that the problem we have already. For an entire year Tice has been trying to turn a former 7th round pick with great athleticism but a lack of great football skills and intelligence into Jay Cutler's blind side protector and it hasn't been working.
If Lovie,Tice and Emery decide that solving this problem is high on the needs list then I won't have any problem if we do draft a LT with our first round pick but if that happens we better be damn sure this one can actually play LT in the NFL. I'm tired of seeing us spend first round picks on LT's who don't end up playing LT and 7th round picks on guys who should be playing RT but we try to make a LT out of. If we're gonna do it at least get it right this time.

I have no problem letting Chris Williams battle J'Marcus Webb for the LT in training camp and I expect Tice to have the position open to competition if for no other reason than to motivate Webb.
1. Chris Williams was an average LG and I would not be surprised if he was beaten out for the position by Lance Louis in camp.
LT:?
LG: Louis
C: Garza
RG: Spencer
RT: Carimi
2. We need something to compete at LT with the ultra inconsistent Webb. I do not care if it comes from one of three areas,
-Draft/Sign a potential LT.
-Draft/Sign a potential RT and allow Carimi to compete with Webb.
-Move Chris Williams to LT and Louis to LG.

Even if those two swapped positions we may be better off but so far Tice seems fixated on keeping Carimi on the right side.

The Bears need a talent upgrade on the OL.
I think that Carimi and Spencer are the only guys guaranteed a position heading into next season.

getting rid of Omyfail and Webb would be an improvement

Yeah he seems incredibly committed to it, but his comments last week made it seem like he was going to give Webb the fist chance, but he was open to other options.
I do not know what they are going to do because we have interior OL competition, but we have 0 competition at OT right now.

I think you'll see them do something about that before camp begins. Last years was pretty screwed because of the lockout so guys weren't switching teams as much as usual. This year will be different.

Webb is q mitchel 2.0 said it all season but too many people fell in love with him cause of his dominating size. Guess that Motown bear isn't a jack ass hmmmm
I expected this move cause I just didn't see another lt being drafted in the first round and fa is pretty underwhelming at lt. Nicks looks appealing right now to play lg
