Some draft experts believe Michael Floyd could be selected by the Chicago Bears with the 19th overall selection. Such a scenario would suit the former Notre Dame receiver just fine.
"That’s a great organization," Floyd said during a phone interview Wednesday. "They’re always on TV. And it’s great seeing them. To tell you the truth, I wouldn’t be mad going anywhere. ... Chicago would be great, but you never know how things go."
The 6-foot-3 1/2, 220-pound Floyd, who was in Indianapolis to participate in the Gatorade Sports Science Institute’s athletic performance testing, turned down an invitation to participate in last week’s Senior Bowl due to a lingering rib injury suffered in a Champs Sports Bowl loss to Florida State.
"After my (bowl game) touchdown, I got hit in my ribs pretty hard," Floyd explained. "I came to the decision that me not being 100 percent, going down to the Senior Bowl wasn’t beneficial for me. I was kind of mad and disappointed in myself because if I was 100 percent, I would for sure want to be down there."
Floyd was asked if he suffered any broken ribs.
"No," he said. "I talked to a few doctors and they said the middle part, where the cartilage and rib connect, that could cause a lot of pain. So they basically just said time would heal it. That's what I'm doing now. And it's feeling pretty good."
Floyd believes he's in the same category as Oklahoma State’s Justin Blackmon, considered the top receiver in this draft. But Floyd will need to assure NFL teams that his off-the-field issues are in the past.
Floyd had to be reinstated at Notre Dame after an arrest for operating a vehicle while intoxicated.
"Like any other college student/athlete, it was a mistake," Floyd said. "When you make a mistake, a crucial mistake like that, the most important thing people want to see is did you learn from the mistake or are you still going down that direction. I think I can tell myself now that I’m going in a different direction. I know how fast this game can be taken away from me."
Notre Dame coach Brian Kelly talked about Floyd's transition to the next level.
"Michael's highlight tape will speak for itself and he'll perform well in workouts," Kelly said Wednesday. "Michael will need to show NFL teams that he has learned from the bad decisions in his past. From my experience with Mike over the last year, I have complete confidence he will be able to show them how much he has matured and how focused he is on being a great person and player."

Maybe he's matured and maybe not but I still think he's one of the biggest 1st round gambles in the draft. I sure am happy we have Phil Emery running this draft instead of Jerry Angelo. Last years was pretty damn hard to screw up. We needed an OT and we needed a DT that much was obvious to every one and we got the guys we wanted. One fell to us and we moved up for the other. If there was a mistake made it may turn out to be drafting Enderle since he was Martz's boy.
I have enough faith in Emery's ability to make sound judgements that if decides Floyd will be a very productive player in the NFL then I'll welcome the pick. We really can't afford to waste anymore high draft picks on some of the complete failures we have. Rounds one through three should be where you're getting your starters from.

All I want is a big WR. I would prefer him to come out of free agency, but I don't really know how Emery will operate in that regard; right now, he is a complete mystery. There are big issues with either Alshon Jeffrey or Michael Floyd; with Jeffrey, he sustained an injury that caused him to not have as good of a season as he would have otherwise. With Floyd, he's a lush. Floyd has character issues that will doom his NFL career. He could become another Lawrence Phillips.

I'm sure he would like it with our need and the team around him...

I like Floyd as far as size/hands, but we all now the organization has the current mindset of "WE NEED TO WIN IN 2012" and the production of WR fresh out of the draft isn't what we need. My war room strategy (insert holiday inn joke here) follows suit with many that have posted already... We still need an OT or DT in the first round and then a WR in the 2nd or 3rd to complement a solid WR free agent acquisition.
I think Floyd's arrest (or any other potential draftee) because of the Hurd situation will make the team pass him by. I would imagine upper management will not want to take much of a risk in regards to off-field issues in this draft.
None of my posts on this forum have been aided by the use of deer-antler spray...

All very true. Floyd may be "reformed" or he may turn out to be just another potentially great NFLer who repeatedly gets into trouble with the law. Given our situation and needs, depite Floyd being a impressive physical prospect, and especially given the recent Hurd embarassment........I say PASS.
If Emery takes him anyway, I defer to his judgment and record of personnel evaluation and hope we won't be saying "told ya' so!" later.

Dan Marino's marijuana problems plagued the team for picking him up....

That's probably one of the greatest tragedies in all of football but it proves that you can't win with a great QB alone. Maybe Angelo forgot to read that chapter in his "History of the NFL" book.
Like I've said, Michael Floyd may have cleaned up his act because Kelly pounded some sense into his head about how it would affect his future in the NFL but what happens once he gets drafted and gets that big contract?
PS: I my own experience guys who get multiple DUI's have a drinking problem and they need help. Besides that they have little or no respect for authority and that makes them a bad risk as a first round pick for a team that puts character as high on the list as the Bears do. He may not be another Sam Hurd but he does have a problem and I doubt it's completely gone.

Well, at least he's motivated. That's a good sign. Maybe he's really growing up and leaving all the trouble behind.
